I lost weight quickly over 6 months on a low carb diet about 15lbs but still ate 2 slices of rye bread per day, 2 very small portions of pasta per week (no rice) and no eating after dinner until the next day for breakfast. You don’t have to deprive yourself of carbs completely.

Retired at 56. Found intermittent fasting early on. One meal a day once weekly. Twice a year go 48 hours fasting. Try to skip breakfast and eat in a 9 hour window, all my meals. Don't eat anything after supper, ever. This helped my reflux so amazingly. Lost 15 pounds so far and lots less inflammation in my body.
Feel like I'm 30 inside as a 60 year old.

In our early 70s.. We've started fasting and Keto because husband has just been diagnosed with Stage 3 C. Our blood pressure and weight are suddenly perfect after always being too high. But we're doing it for the cancer. We're keto for life now, but we'll let you know if we succeeded beating the big bad C with fasting, exercise, meditation and other alternative therapies. 💗

My wife and I just love you guys. We retired January 2023, now living in Cuenca, Ecuador. We have been doing intermittent fasting over 2 years now. We have both lost a lot of weight. We eat as many calories just in a smaller window. We also have given up processed foods and commercial breads. The beautiful city we are now living in has great public transportation at an affordable cost. Residents travel on the tranvia (light rail) for seventeen cents. We are currently renting a modern apartment in an elevated building with 24 hour security. We are here 7 months now and love it, it feels like home.

I used to be hypoglycemic and wanted food the minute my feet hit the floor in the morning. I have done intermittent fasting, avoiding sugar, and wheat. I lost 22 lbs and my pain level is down. We are 73 and doing pretty well. Two meals is good for us. We eat at 5 pm and then 11 or 12 brunch . We have coffee early morning. I am so happy, I no longer need food every three hours.

You are spot on, 2 years ago age 62, I had a general check up and was told I’m straight in as type 2 diabetic. I changed my diet immediately and stoped all carbs and sugars. Went from processed foods to all fresh and home cooked meat, fish, veg and salads. Including exercise. After 3 months my diabetes graph dropped off the cliff and I was below normal but I continued with the diet and 2 years on a still normal reading for blood sugar. I’m used to the diet and don’t miss any carbs at all. Agree with all you do.

You are so right that health makes all the difference in retirement. We are careful to avoid sugar and processed foods but my husband has bone problems in his ankles so can no longer walk. You are absolutely right, too many retirees neglect their health. I am 78 and we go for a challenging bike ride or hike just about every day - it is important to exercise hard enough to be short of breath and muscles complaining. We don't buy processed food at all, everything is from raw ingredients, I even make our own pasta using a machine, a hundred grams of flour and an egg. We eat a bowl of mixed fruit for breakfast and after every meal. As a result, and a bit of luck, we are both in great health, no aches and pains or stiff joints and plenty of energy.

@@cfyfe7168 We both had sedentary jobs. When I was fifty we were both overweight, smokers and very unfit. We bought a couple of cheap bikes, at first we struggled to ride around the local park but gradually extended it to full days then weekends then touring every holiday. We also started cycling or jogging before work. When we retired we took our bikes to Europe every year and toured a different country each time, Denmark, Holland, Italy, France, Down the Danube, Switzerland. I am very fortunate that my wife is just as keen as me on this lifestyle.

All good advice. We just morphed into two meals since retiring, as we usually work out by biking/machines 3-4 days per week in the morning. So first meal between 11-12, then dinner about 7 with minimal snacking in between or after. So fasting 12-15 hours. Feels good, weights are pretty good and stable. Mostly fresh food, low starch, no processed food, rare sweets. Also eating out rarely compared to before retirement.
Just back from 4 weeks in Europe, lots of walking, also late breakfast, and then modest evening meal. We often share one salad and one entree to avoid the restaurant glut when eating out due to necessity. Rare desert usually shared.
Money can’t buy health once you get past the basics.

Good advice for any age! Without good health you have nothing. I retired a couple of months ago and now eat twice a day. I no longer have to get up at 5:30 am or have an assigned lunchtime as I did with my job. I also realized I am no longer "stress eating." I eat around 8:30 am and again around 4:30. I might have a small piece of fruit in between if I feel hungry. Going to the gym daily is now in my routine. I am no longer too tired to go. My husband now goes with me. I bought him an ITouch watch to keep track of his heart rate. I think his doctor will be pleased with the results at his next check-up.

Health in retirement is definitely very important. We also eat just 2 meals a day and we are satisfied that it is helping us to retain good health. We also like to eat eggs often and salmon (wild caught, of course) and sweet potatoes (less starch than regular ones). Also, if you can find cauliflower crust pizza in your grocery store, you might want to give it a try. The ones we have tried have been pretty good, especially if we add a few peppers, etc. to it! We are looking into the possibility of being more/totally carnivorous for a while, too, to see whether that may help with some of our weight loss. We don't need to lose a lot between us but one of us definitely has further to go than the other, so we both go on the same 'diet' for support.

You go! I find that when I eat higher protein and fat and cut out the carbs that I really don't get very hungry at all and 2 meals is very do-able. I space mine a little differently though - just because I naturally seem to get hungry around 10a...so I eat around 10a and 2-3p but sometimes I'm not even hungry at 2-3p so I'll skip that meal too occasionally! I have a little wrist blood pressure unit and comparing it to what they measure at the doctors office it doesn’t seem bad. Once day I was feeling a lot of pressure in my head and neck, so I measured my blood pressure and it was super high, so I was going to wait and try again, but decided to go to the clinic where they tossed me in an ambulance and I got the arteries roto routered and some stents put in. They said because I acted quickly there was no heart damage, but my arteries were really blocked from my typical North American diet. So now that they were cleaned up, I have been trying to do better but our food is really bad with all the sugar and salt they hide in almost everything.
I have been mostly avoiding meat except Salmon burgers and a little chicken now and then, but I think I am going to take some research trips to Asia and the Mediterranean to learn some better habits.
One of the things the doctors told me in my classes was that during the Korean War they cut open a lot of Americans and Koreans and found that the Koreans didn’t really have any artery blockage while the Americans had quite a bit even though they were very young adults and we have only become more sedentary since then with a lot more processed food than was available in the 1950’s

A little bit of everything. Jacket potatoes takes less time in the microwave, you can precook in the microwave and then finish off in the air fryer. also sweet potato you can cook the same way.
Palm oil is very bad for you.

I am a vegetarian for many reasons including environmental, animal cruelty and health. I love veggies so that makes it easier. Losing weight is easy when eating mostly vegetables but if eating the pre-made non-meats, that can cause lots of weight gain also. I tired fasting from 7 p.m. to noon but I got shakey, and dizzy and not feeling well so I took the time down to 11 and mostly it is okay. I did the 7 p.m. to noon for about 5 weeks and didn’t lose much weight, about 4 pounds. Cutting out sugar is really necessary for healthy eating. Good luck with your “diet” and staying healthy.

Good video. Thanks a lot for doing it. I would add mental health in addition to physical health and make that most important. Exercise wise I try to walk or walk/run about 4-5 miles per day. I am fortunate to live somewhere where I can get outside most days so this is pretty easy and does not require a lot of will power. We don’t restrict our diet but are not big meat and potatoes types. We would prefer a salad for dinner over meat or pasta. Also, we try to eat more in the middle of the day and less in the evenings.

@@ThisIsOurRetirement I might add that when adopting an intermittent fasting regime long term, it's important to make sure you're getting all the nutrition in the two meals you do eat...it's easy to be short some vitamins and minerals if you're not careful. Good luck -- an intermittent fasting and keto-ish diet is life changing for many.

I switched to a meat-based diet a couple of years ago... More recently I started working on my mobility even if I'm only 48 so I can front-load my health before I get older. Start with stretching once a day to now 3 times a day... my goal is to be able to the the Asian Squat.

My A1c was 6.5 last year up from 5.6 the prior year. At that time, I was doing intermittent fasting. My doctor immediately sent me to a diabetic dietician that quickly changed my diet. I must have 3 meals per day with 30-45 grams of carb along with protein and a vegetable. I also must have at least 1 snack per day of 15 g carb with 1 oz of protein. I have stuck with this for over a year now. In 6 months, my A1c dropped to 5.8 and my cholesterol dropped from 229 to 123 in that same period. I was told once you are diabetic you are always diabetic and must be careful. I eat mostly chicken and fish. I cut out every potato but mashed unless it is a special occasion. I sometimes make my own bread but it is so good that I am tempted to eat more. I applaud you on your dedication and efforts. It sounds like it is working well for you. I also try to walk right after I eat. I aim for 5000 steps per my doctor but normally am around 8000. Love your channel!!!!

Their brand is called Art of Bread , and the other Bakery is called Zeman's, which also has a location in Oak Park Michigan It's a Wonderful Jewish Bakery but if you go in there you will be tempted by all of their sweet treats! I have type 2 diabetes and for the past year have controlled my blood sugar by doing exactly what you are doing, except sometimes I eat breakfast. Today, I have decided to return to intermittent fasting, since I have gained 5 pounds. It is so sad to see people who are financially able to travel, but cannot because they have so many health problems. They are convinced that they need to follow the USDA food pyramid and eat lots of grains and fruit with little fat or meat, so they are always hungry. Thank you for spreading with word.

Another great conversation Norm and Tina. Health is always #1 as it determines the quality of our retirement life. Money is important but secondary. Health = Wealth.
I have been on a 2 meal diet for last 40 yrs, since teenage yrs. First meal is always late lunch between 1-3PM. My food is mostly home cook from scratch. I am one of those rare shoppers who go around the perimeter of the grocery store - Produce to meat to dairy & then check-out. Anything that is packaged is a turn-off. I avoid processed foods as much as I can. I believe this is also the main reason why I am rarely ever sick - Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, all good. My medical record file is so thin, couple of pages that my family doctor complained that I never see him. I only see him every few years to maintain an active status with him. To this day, I actually don't know how it feels to have a headache.

Agreed I early retired in Feb this year and my first and most goal was to get fit again. I went on holidays for a long time on beach sides. Practiced long beach walks in the early morning then swimming. I made sure I never booked a hotel room that included breakfast. I would just have a coffee in the morning in my room, a very light snack around 10. I would only eat really at lunch time and diner because it is important to enjoy ourselves. When I came back home I kept swimming regularly at the local public swimming pool and kept eating reasonably (and still do). After a laborious and slow start I lost more than 20kg in 6 months and it keeps falling down dramatically without doing anything special. Yes, I avoid industrial food as much as I can. I also keep sugars and carbs at the minimum.

Hello Tina & Norm, Another excellent video! We retired early in 2022. I'm 58 and my husband is 64. I have type 2 diabetes and it's causing all sorts of problems. I was diagnosed 2 years ago. I asked for Ozempic (before it became popular) but my doctor wanted to start me on a different battery of meds. In April he was on vacation when I had my blood tests. His professional partner called me and put me on Ozempic immediately. What a huge difference! I lost 35 lbs in 3 months and my blood sugar is much better. Ozempic doesn't make me crave sugar and I am focused on eating healthy. I haven't felt like eating much meat and I'm craving fruits and veg. Although I don't call myself a vegetarian, I certainly eat like one. I track my progress on an app and it helps. I agree that health is more important than money in retirement. I also have nerve issues that are being looked at -- preventing me from exercising. I can swim and look after my chickens, but that's about it. Thanks again for a great video! Cheers, Sandra

I retired 21 years ago at 45. Sure, health is everything. I'd rather be homeless and healthy than unhealthy in a beach house. One thing it took me about 10 years to figure out was to give myself permission to walk 2-4 hours a day. I was walking, but felt 2-4 hours was "wasting time". Silly, I know...now. That's when I really felt "retired".
About eating and hunger...Take a look at lions in Africa (not the zoo). The pride sleeps and sleeps and then all kind of wake up at the same time. Soon they go looking for food. No alarm clock. So what wakes them up? Hunger.
For humans (Westerners) what hunger triggers is a 10 second walk to the kitchen to start eating. That's not the purpose of hunger. Hunger is to get you up and walking around for food. for 99% of human existence that walk lasted hours, even days to find something to eat. So when I'm fasting or wanting to scale back I wait until I'm really hungry and then go for a walk...normally some food shopping. 2.5 miles one way and carrying 5-15 lbs of food back 2.5 miles. I have different routes so normally longer. Hunger goes almost completely away. I feel good, light. I live in Phoenix so normally when I get home water is what I want. It can be another 30-60 minutes before I feel hungry again. The trick is to control how much I eat then. Often fasting, long walk, feeling light, my brain says I deserve a reward. A mistake I often make unless I'm really thinking.
The tip of drinking water to fill up never worked for me at all.

Great stuff as always. Part of that health is learning strategies during the years preceding retirement on how to relax, how to say no at work, and how to treat your self the way you would your grandchild - with loving care and kindness. It’s the absence of stress, good diet, exercise, and rest that make up the four legs on the table called Life. Stress causes inflammation throughout the body as well as engages the sympathetic nervous system which doesn’t allow the body to digest food which prevents the body from absorbing nutrients and from eliminating harmful waste. That’s a lot but move your good idea back or step to the the decade or two before retirement where the accumulation of healthy habits or otherwise will determine the consequences we experience at 45, 55, and 65. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Glad to hear you are taking steps to protect your health. Wealth can't replace health. Thanks for sharing. My spouse retired in April and has lost 28 lbs. Eating no more than 2 meals each day and mostly meat with some vegetables. He is very active and has little to no stress since saying good bye to his job. Retirement can be really good for your health. Cheers.

I saw a pop-up on your feed, asking about dimunition of appetite after age 80. I am only weeks away from that milestone, and I can assure you that cravings for certain foods, binge eating, and other less-than-healthy eating habits DO NOT go away just because of a calendar date! On the contrary, it's all too easy to pack on the pounds or kilograms as you age, and it's much harder to get them off again. I am certain it is partly the likelihood that we can't easily maintain the intensity of our activities, but it's a poor excuse, and I'm sure we all know the solution!
At least, following Tina and Norm indicates you have the right mindset. Just gotta make the effort, whatever you can manage!

Great advise as always Tina and Norm. Absolutely right that without health all the money in the world means nothing. I understand how the Gluten free diet was a disaster for you. There are some decent gluten free products out there but usually triple the price of regular products. Seven to ten dollars for a loaf of bread that is half the size of regular is criminal. My wife has Celiac disease so gluten free is is a necessity not a choice. Most things I will eat with her but I just can't do any of the bread products. Mostly just terrible. Thanks again. Have a great weekend.

At age 56 (I'm thinking 3 more years of work) I am now on low carb diet also finding out a few years ago my blood A1C was too high. Sometimes I do the same exact diet you mention, with a hard boiled egg white in the AM or low sodium V8 juice. I find the "balanced plan" works great (145 grams of carbs per day or 45 per 3-meal in a day. I have heard that if you skip breakfast it tricks your brain into thinking you are hungry all day so good to have that coffee and a little something else. Thanks as always for these great videos!

It’s great you are aware of your health and being pro active, your V8 might contain hidden sugars.
