Don’t forget about the other Toyota engine swap options! You can go for the four cylinder 1AR/2AR(wayyyy better than the 2ZZ) or the 2GR V6 if you are crazy! Marc from Frankenstein Motorworks makes all the parts for these engines to bolt right in.

2AR is not a better motor by any means, just a larger one. ClubTR has restrictions on larger displacement motors and internals, 2AR needs internals to do any impressive power for its size, while the 2ZZ makes about the same power stock but responds well to bolt ons. 2ZZ also isn’t an increase in displacement, so there will be no weight penalty for the ClubTR class
I would love to see a full custom AR head with better valve angles and porting with VVTLi from the 2ZZ, could see 240hp all motor

Just got my kswap running and I love it. I had a 2ZZ and I wanted to do an NA build. I sent 2 2ZZ blocks to the machine shop and neither were within spec and I didn’t want to sleeve them (the mmc cylinder walls means you can’t bore the block). I dug the hole deeper and went kswap. Couple things to note:
If you go k24 you will lose AC unless you want to custom fab. My plan for the winter is to take the bracket for the swap and just machine new holes that shift the compressor further down since the engine is taller. So I think it is possible.
The header you use needs to be for the k24 or your exhaust will interfere with the rear subframe.
There’s a lot of vibration and rattles. I partially blame the previous owner for not using the right hardware to hold on body panels and interior panels, so I’m battling that right now. If you install a rollbar, you will need to cut the interior panels for the storage compartments behind the seat which will get rid of a lot of interior sound insulation.
The shifter feel is the sloppiest part of the car. Everyone misses getting into 3rd and they skip to 5th. Apparently there’s a solution that allows you to use oem honda shift cables but I have not tried it yet. It also means no center console.

The editing and photography have always been a strong suit on this channel but it just keeps getting better and better. Every montage is killer. Also Ben’s sense of humor slays me. I am slain.
2zz-ge with a supercharger or turbo would be great for the track coming in around 450-500 hp. On top of that lotus has a lot of good support for that engine and you can also get that computer for it to runnn

Damn, Toyota needs a MR-2 successor. Maybe get a rebadge from Lotus and make it a GR-2, perhaps? Emira already has Toyota V6 engine.
Unfortunately, focus groups turned it in to a midship crossover with the moniker only. These are skyrocketing in price, because the reality is Toyota will never make a bare bones street legal go kart again.

Are you sure you got all the guts out of the Catalytic? If you were worried about it before I'd be more worried about it now. You can always get a stainless tubular header off Ebay for $100.
Awesome MR2 build so far, I'm surprised you didn't change out the brake lines to braided hoses at the time.

Little tip from a 1zz racer, I'm slow so take it with grain of salt, 1zz engines respond very well to boost, being known to make 250-270 wheel on 11 psi (don't push it past 250 for track use, rods go snap). If you are going to swap, the 2zz can run a 1zz pan, so that was a good purchase if you end up wanting to go 2zz. Good luck and welcome to the boat anchor 1zz gang.

Speaking as someone who owns a 2zz swapped MR2 Spyder, the 2zz engine is a great candidate for a really fun track car. The motor is easy to source, very fun to drive (with a 6 speed trans) and is very reliable in stock form. If you are looking into modifying the engine in the future for high horse power, than go with the K series.

Exactly. The k engines are awesome, but they are one of the worst sounding Honda engines. They are the ones that end up sounding like fartcans.

Don't listen to the bs propaganda. The EPA does not care about modifications to gasoline engines. They're mostly coming after sellers that are distributing diesel emissions defeat stuff, and very rarely, some hondata stuff with a focus on emissions defeats. They don't care about w 1.8 L Corolla engine.
@@jimchance5006 They definitely do care. Some shops that specifically do track-only fabrications, builds, and installs have been sent cease and desists and even shut down or audited. There's plenty of video evidence on TH-cam. I do agree that their main goal is taking off the diesel emissions bypasses but that's why they're being so quiet about trying to go for motorsport. They don't want people to know because people would get mad.

@gears and gasoline, another main issue for the 1zz is oil burning due to sludge build up in the oil return holes in the piston. its a very common problem as well. it was fixed in 03+ 1zz engines.

Gears and gasoline is so much different from other car channels. They’re so sophisticated and There’s always time and effort put into these videos, it really shows.

can't wait for the suspension. as a mk3 owner who is 2zz swapping and looking to track my car soon and some one who knows a few other mk3 owners, a combo of chassis bracing, frog arms, and sway bars all do wonders with the feel. it makes the mr2 turn into an absolute go cart and all of those separate or combined together work very very well for the money. also the 2zz + 6 speed swap can be done very very cheaply with a donor Celica gts and trans shifter parts+ headers
expect to pay anywhere from 500-2000 for a 2000-2001 only year gts donor car. then 800-1500 for the rest of the parts depending on how much fab work you can do, how nice you want it. there are cad files floating around online for the parts to 6 speed swap if you can make them and want to budget for other things, including the toyota shifter shaft, also it needs different headers. try to aim for under 150k miles and 160 compression dry and cold, albeit the most difference between the cyls should be under 5-10 between them no matter the compression level. check for wiped cams and worn lift bolts, those are considered wear items almost at least in the lotus world. harder aftermarket cams work better than the toyota ones. also the spark plugs can tell a lot too about these finicky engines people don't necessarily know how to take care of. that moroso oil pan would be very useful with a 2zz as well.

Nice to see the precats intact. On my Spyder, at 6K miles that was the first thing to go and a TRD header was put in place. Nice to see you save an MR2 from the scrapyard.
If you want to add a few HP to the 1ZZ, one of the mods that adds a little midrange to trick the ECU into advancing the ignition timing is to use a small spacer between the MAF sensor and the air box housing (assuming that hasn’t been removed), remove the vanes of the air box tube, switch the injectors for the 2ZZ injectors and for very little money (like $100), you get a few more HP. It was a custom piece but could be properly matched to the diameter of the MAF opening and you just need longer screws to affix it to the stock air box. Google MR2 spyder MAF mod if you want to see pictures. The injectors can be purchased on monkeywrenchracing.com (they are the yellow ones). Then use premium fuel after the conversion.
