This is one of Rorion Gracie's first American brown belts Lowell Andersen circa 1993. Richard Bressler(Rorion first American student) is also there. I was a student there at the Gracie Academy in Torrance CA at the time of these fights. Royce was still teaching there and he had won UFC 1 by then. Can you imagine the pride we had as students to be training there in those days?
    These were special times...

@@borizhAbsolutely! Through intelligence, marketing, and control of placement in the original ufc competition. They were smart and didn't allow skilled wrestling into the sport until after Gracie retired. There js a reason tank abbot and the next generation had to wait, they didn't receive indentations until the end of gracies run at the top and the world knew what jujitsu could do. They didn't fix the fights, that's bs , he win fair and square , but they did control who fought who and who competed. It was THEIR competition lol

Love all these old challenge fights. I remember renting the Gracie In Action tapes back in the early 90s and watching the first UFC. Several years later Fabio Santos opened an academy in San Diego. The guy in the board shorts (last fight) was able to stay on his feet the longest and actually shot in for a takedown. Looks like he had some wrestling experience. This is why a lot of us early practitioners started jiu jitsu. It was to learn how to fight and for self defense. I never even knew there were tournaments until after 2001. Keep on training.

      @pedro90 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Mr.CoolBottom you have to ask yourself? "are my ideas new and revolutionary or simple enough for someone else to have attempted and failed." In other words- nothings new under the sun, not saying you could not beat a Gracie but many have before you have come with the same philosophy, and better skill and still failed miserably.
The best way to defeat BJJ is to Know BJJ.

    • @pedro90
      @pedro90 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mr.CoolBottom your not thinking out of the box, your deep in a corner of the box but think you've found a secret passage. Its equivalent of a somoene saying, "hey if you get thirsty during a workout take salt pills." in other words- your throwing out i would do this blah blah blah and not stopping to realize the big picture."All of these ideas have failed!!" If neutralizing a highly trained BJJ practioner was a easy as attempting to do a knee during a double or biting- then it would have never gotten as far as it did. Everything you're saying has been attempted and failed. sure its possible to land the perfect knee strike at the moment of entry- but that window is so small with such small room for error its almost impossible- especially without prior grappling knowledge- to actually do.

Hats off to Lowell who was a 3 year Tae kwon do guy who made a fair showing with a BJJ grand master. On the other hand the Gracies show so little class by holding on extra long when these guys are tapping.
Most American Martial Artist are recreational. they don't practice four and five hours a day. When the Gracie challenge was issued they were like Navy Seals beating up National Guard reservist.
When the Gracies came over they were very disrespectful to other Martial artist. Royce issued an open challenge in Black Belt Magazine to Judo Gene Lebelle (a senior citizen). Gene accepted the challenge, with one little tweak, he wanted to fight someone his own age from the Gracie family so he challenged Heilio. That fight never happened.
In an interview with Royce Gracie after UFC 2 by Black Belt Magazine Royce was asked if he owed anything to Japanese Jujitsu and Judo and he said "We owe nothing to Japanese Jujitsu, nothing at all!" I have video of the head of Gracie Jujitsu in France being challenged and submitted in a seminar by some French MMA guy. If you inbox me I will connect you to the website that has it posted. The sad thing about it is, after the public win, the Gracie family showed up at the bar where the guy worked and wanted to fight him.
The Gracies publicly challenged Benny Urquidez, Mike Tyson (who is a Gracie Fan now) and anyone else they could use to make a name for themselves. Royce acted like a little bitch (and no I wouldn't say it to his face but you know it's true) when Ishmael beat him in Brazil and when Eddie Bravo beat his sibling. The family has acted classlessly throughout their tenure here and now they have realized that commercial gyms need a kinder and gentler image to be successful.
The Gracie luster disappears very quickly when they are on the losing end of a fight or business deal. People act as if no one won a street fight until the Gracies came along but I have and many others have by the grace of God.
My hat's off to BJJ because it is a formidable style and they train like they fight. But some of the Gracies have been real assholes over the years and that's just some real talk.

The guy actually looks like a high school/college kid.

    • @carltonforrest9126

Lowell was the guy n the checkered pants in the 3rd to the last fight and the last fight. The last Gracie fighter acted like a dick as if he tried to hurt Lowell for giving him a run for his money. As you can see in these clips they script these as friendly matches and then purposefully do things that could permanently injure people who are just trying to test themselves and train. The Gracie's need to be embarrassed by these videos. fFighting guys with guts and beer bellies or disrespecting guys who in front of his own training partners admits the superiority of their style and they act like smug duche bags.

I was there for the fights in Torrance. Mauricio was in one of them, a blue belt. Joe Pardo and Mark Burmeister, both blue belts at the time, and then Lowell Anderson (brown belt at the time) beating the little guy, who I knew. The guy was a semiconductor components broker and when I found out he was going to fight in a challenge match, I advised him not to. I even told him step by step how our guy would beat him (he was a TKD fighter). Nice guy, but sure enough he got beat twice, but then before the third time, Royce said this time, you can't tap out for five minutes. He thought about it and declined, muttering "I don't want to get killed." Royce then made the point that you got three chances here--in the streets, you only get one chance. That drove the point home. When we were in the intermediate/advanced class upstairs, and if a challenge match was about to materialize, one of the instructors would come upstairs and yell "Showtime", and we would all stop class and run down to check out the challenge fights. I was in the background looking thru the window, while Ed O'Neill was one of the few who was inside the little room to spectate. "Al Bundy" is now an accomplished black belt. I think he was a blue belt at the time also. Which made our point at the time. Our blue belts could defeat black belts from other arts because of the techniques from BJJ. Today, because of the incorporation of BJJ, martial artists are more proficient at submission grappling. I recall Danny Inosanto and Richard Bustillo's JKD students started training with the Gracies because our students were dominating them. Everybody's game got elevated

19:32 is an amazing escape from a sort of neck crank or bully choke. He doesn't have great position, but you can tell he probably has wrestling, considering he used a wrestling reversal in the first round, and he has fairly good takedown defense. But look at the way he forces a reversal out of that choke with his right arm.

I agree with you about not letting emotion take over and it's something Rener and everyone else at the academy teach. However this was obviously a time where the fighting mindset in general was at a different place. A lot of Jiu Jitsu guys were pretty ruthless. I mean UFC 1 was VERY ruthless.
No disrespect, but sometimes comments like yours are just as bad as you saying the video isn't a "Good example." Especially when the video is 20 minutes long and those strikes in the video were only ten seconds of it. That's focusing on the small negatives of something great, and IMO that's a flaw in itself. Sure he got a bit out of control with the strikes, HOWEVER the BIG picture of the video is how Jiu Jitsu helps in a real fight whether you are controlled or decide to throw in a few strikes.
If you SERIOUSLY can say that if someone was striking you and you wouldn't want to strike them a few times when you had the open chance, then you'd be lying. Whether you act on it is a different story however, these guys were fighting real time, so yeah, the guy chose to strike with his Jiu Jitsu. If you don't agree with it, that's fine, ignore those few seconds and see the pure Jiu Jitsu in the other 19 minutes.
Today, Rener and the rest of the academy are showing ways to "Keep it playful," so if you ARE a student in the academy, you should be aware of this and be able to look past this considering it's a simple flaw that can be set aside from the big picture. The point is, Jiu Jitsu is showing its effectiveness.

Ah yes, I agree. No disrespect meant towards BJJ, and yes this was a different era. I think we agree more than anything (especially on the "keep it playful" philosophy, which we incorporate every week of training). I'm sure we can also agree that some hot-headed blokes see old footage like this and don't see the context (which is demonstrating the effectiveness of BJJ during a time when no one knew about it, as you say yourself). Instead some ("some") poor blokes watch old footage like this and see it as an excuse NOT to "keep it playful," which is unfortunate!
Do not hate on me brother! I'm not being a keyboard warrior here! I think if you read my comment carefully and watch some of my videos you'll see we agree! :o

Greg Cunningham Having chipped some teeth while sparring (and not wearing a mouth guard), I've found mouth guards do offer a considerable amount of protection from blows. Of course I think we can agree they don't offer perfect protection, especially if you're a career fighter who's getting pounded daily (e.g. Dan Henderson).

The Gracie Family talks so much about sportsmanship, I'm a Combatives member & all of my interactions with different Gracie schools have reflected a positive atmosphere where egos are checked at the door BUT with all due respect; I have to say as someone who has watched just about everything Gracie on the net, I see a lot of unsportsmanlike behavior from the fighters, Renzo even stepped on some dudes head & Royce punished with extra submission time several times. Is it wrong to think that the family gained a little humility after learning the Gracie BJJ alone can no longer make you the baddest guy on the planet? Just saying.

All you anti-Jiu Jitzu fools haven't got a clue as to what fighting is about. I hardly doubt any of you keyboard warriors have been in a real fighting situation... You call them bullshit artists for some odd reason, yet you never prove this or provided any explanation. In this video I see men do the typical throw strikes, but Jiu-Jitsu trained martial artists respond by exposing these peoples assaults through self-defense... Really Jiu-Jitsu is self-defense, waiting for an aggressive opponent to make a mistake, and taking advantage of it. It is not a martial art of aggression, rather it is one of defense, and that is why it is so powerful. All I see are highly skilled martial artists taking advantage of peoples urge to punch/assault. In my experience fighting usually comes to the ground, in one way or another. Look at fighting videos online, or watch UFC fights.... Sure, there are plenty of strikes, but its all about the take down, its all about dominating and taking away your opponents ability to fight. This is either through a knockout standing up, or on the ground pummeling someones face in, or choking them out/forcing them to tap. Unless there is a knockout you can be pretty sure its going to the ground. And thats where Jiu-Jitsu succeeds, it specializes in peoples weaknesses. It's brilliant actually, and is sad you naive fools don't understand what fighting is really all about. A weak man has to start a fight, a strong one only defends himself when it is necessary.

True, takedowns are the one flaw in BJJ. They didn't really matter back in the day, though. It's not hard to take a striker down, while wrestlers and Judo players would complete the takedowns FOR the BJJ practitioner.
Once the fight was on the ground, the BJJ guy would win every time. Wrestlers could pin, but had no submission defense. Judo players knew some submissions, but had no knowledge of positioning like a BJJ practitioner.

I am a grappler, I do appreciate Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, but one thing you have to understand.. in the early 90's. The Gracies introduced their Rules in the Ring to the world after they had been fighting under those rules for 70 years.
This was a huge upset to the generic Martial Arts World. Most Martial Art relied on "STAND UP".. lets try to use the "Vibrating Fist Of Death" (or whatever), to take out an opponent.
Many and I mean MANY of the Martial Artists got their asses handed to them when this style of Martial Arts were introduced to the USA. They Thought that if they could punch or kick.. that was all the skill they needed... Until they found themselves tied in a knot by the Grappling Martial Arts.
The earliest Days of UFC/MMA Proved... You had to have grappling skills or you were toast....... Ya you might get lucky and Punch or Kick some guy before he grabs one of your limbs and creates a new double joint.. .but realistically.. it showed you need to be able to Box, Kick Box and Grapple or you were just going to get your ass kicked.
In the early 90's the Gracies dominated, (along with the Wrestlers), but several years later the MMA movement, surpassed the Gracie style and moved on to incorporate Many, Many more techniques. After 70+ years of stagnation, the whole MMA Movement, Adapted many of the Killer Gracie's techniques and brought many, many more styles into the Art form to produce the modern MMA system.
This is the best of the best.. .take all techniques from all Martial Arts, (and newly formed Martial Arts), and use only the best of the best moves... ie drop the attitude on "I Was Trained in This Art.. (insert what ever stupid, limited Martial Art you think is best) and Open your Mind to the VAST new Martial Arts out there.
(Seriously guys.. Your CRANE KUNG FU etc.. may be great for beating up untrained Peasants, but it cannot compete with modern MMA).
    Sluggo
P.S. I am not a boxer or Kickboxer... if I get into a match with them... My only shot is avoiding their first blow and grabbing a limb so I can make new joints etc. Because of my lack of Boxing/Kickboxing.. I am gimped for MMA... maybe someday I will change that. But I am very proud of my Grappling ability, and I am pleased to have that training. Note to young people... who are not THUGS.. Take some MMA training!!! Do not settle for some "Standard" Martial Art!
    Sluggo

reason why the last guy was so mad at the end, was cause the wrestler had him. Had the wrestler kept in training he would have won easily (anyone listening herd him say he hasnt wrestled in a while). If he has any knowledge of boxing or even muay thai (i counted 4 times he could have blasted the jujitsu guy with some knees), the jujutsu guy would be dead and he knew it.

You have a cpl yrs of total dedication right there. Its way easier to learn other MA when your grappling skills (jits, wrestling, judo) are already high.

Catch was born after a long time period. They analyzed their tactics well and then created it. Do you know the Catch Wrestling teacher of Sakuraba? He is the founder of that. Before he made his art, he was just a classical wrestler. Like Helio's story. Before he created BJJ, he was just a Kosen Judoka. Sakuraba show the world how is done, and even make some of the Gracie’s learn how to quit.

Sakuraba was a unique individual who figured out how to defeat 4 of the Gracie family members. He eventually lost a rematch to Royce. The Gracie JiuJitsu art lives on despite the losses some practitioners experienced.

Ianoodin One of the important aspects of Martial Arts is self discipline and emotional control. So no, he shouldn't of acted like a douche.

Ianoodin These people you're responding to have never played any sports or do any thing that is competitive. They're straight keyboard warriors talking bullshit about emotional control. C'mon now.

Ianoodin The Gracie family are not just "everyone" they have many decades of experience and training in martial arts and they're all taught from a young age.
So if one of them enters a fight knowing they're going to win I'd expect them to show some discipline and good sportsmanship. Comparing them to some knuckle headed footballer is ludacris.
