Asgore is one of the most interesting characters in Undertale and Deltarune, but I never see people talking about this aspect of his character. If you knew this then let me know in the comments because I swear nobody talks about it LOL

which is odd seeing as how he's LITERALLY the final boss, the big baddy you have to fight to get the ending, maybe it's because you never really get to know him? that's why i cant wait for more deltarune chapters, cause i'm sure we'll be able to get to know asgore just a little better

@@Slow-zm5wvHeck, I saw it on my first run. I also lost to Papyrus enough times that he just let me go. Yeah...I was really bad at bullet hells.
My second full playthrough actually went way better. I was just playing for fun when after beating Mettaton EX I realized...I hadn't died once. I was super stressed going into the Asgore fight, but I just barely got past him on my first try. So close...only for Photoshop Flowey to kill me inside of a minute.
@jamesdinius7769 I'll be honest. My first time playing papyrus got me too, lol. Took FOREVER to get him without dying. I legitimately find Asgore easier because you have much better defense for Asgore, although if you're doing the "you really like to challenge yourself," run Asgore is very difficult.

It made me appreciate Asgore's character more because he knew he had to fight every single human who fell down and reset every time they died until they gave up and decided to give up their soul after too many deaths.

I don't think he really knows the result of the experiments Alphys has done. He was shocked when Alphys told him in the pacifist route epilogue
Asgore is so underrated that everyone forgot about that line and the fact that Asgore gave Alphys the human souls to save monsters that have "fallen down". He knows about the power of souls and their effect to preserve past death and how they can reset time but he does not understand it himself.
Don't human souls persist or continue existing even after death?

Asgores theme is one of the greatest compositions ever. There is so much power and emotion behind his piece and it perfectly represents how he is a tragic hero.
LETS TALK ABOUT TEMMIE REAL QUICK. Temmie Armor originally costs 9999G, but the price lowers every time you die. There’s NO dialogue option that lets you tell Temmie about ur time powers (obviously), YET TEMMIE STILL KNOWS WHEN YOU DIE AND RELOAD. TEMMIE KNOWS ABOUT RELOADS, AND IM PRETTY SURE THEY REMEMBER THEM. The only other people that canonically remember reloads are determined beings. Also, if u interact with the save point at Temmie Village, it’s the only save point (that I know of) that doesn’t fill you with determination, it fills you with detemmination instead. TEMMIES PRETTY MUCH CANONICALLY HAS THEIR OWN VERSION OF DETERMINATION (or at least just the shop keeper does).
EDIT: at this point at least 10 people have replied to this comment saying that Temmie is based on Temmie (the developer) and I’m saying I KNOW. it’s just cool from a lore perspective.

It's no surprise Asgore is so depressed, hes killed multiple children over and over until they each finally give up.
Yeah, Asgore is a really sad character considering everything he's gone through:
- Chara and Asriel dying
- Toriel leaving him
- The burden of killing 6 children
- Being aware of the Resets (apparently)

Toriel remembers your favorite cake flavor every reset so she says she already had a feeling you would choose that flavour
Yeah, but a lot of the characters remember subconciously, but not conciously. Toriel, who notes the fear if you somehow died to her. Sans(he doesn't remember, but he does know about them), he notes the frustration on your face with each death. Papyrus, who makes odd comments about you seeming familiar with his puzzles sometimes on second playthroughs. Mettaton, who directly references "rooms" in his dialogue in the Opera part of the Metta-ton of boss sub-fights. Rooms are what each individual area is called in Undertale. Home. Home Exterior. Snowdin Forest. These are all called "rooms".

i love how in other games, saving and resetting is just a normal thing, but toby did his thing and literally made it PART OF THE LORE
When a random child rolls up, knows all your moves before you make them, counters them perfectly, and gives you the hardest fight of your extremely long life, you might be fighting against a time looper. You can only hope to frustrate them into giving up and dying for good.. which Asgore did. Multiple times. The fact that we can beat him out of all the others is a testament to the strength of our vessel; of Frisk.
Exactly all the other humans eventually gave up and lost their determination after getting killed so many times which also shows how strong monsters are
The dead humans are the incompetent game journalists

Or even sadder, a Testament to the pain killing children is causing Asgore- that, genuinely, he wanted to die in his fight.
Shop keeper Gerson (The turtle) also has some bit of meta-knowledge - which is revealed in the genocide route - as he knows that you can't hurt him while in the shop menu.
When talking to him and choosing "threat", he states:
"Ive lived too long to be afraid of something like you."
"Try it, kiddo! ...I know you cant here."
"Wah ha... Knowledge like that is the only reason Ive survived so long."
He just knows you can’t kill him in the shop

I always considered this as the explanation:
1. Frisk and Flowey are the ONLY ones who can remember resets, period. (Chara's a strange case)
2. Sans, Asgore, and Alphys are aware that resets are a thing and that something in their world has been doing that very thing.
And temmie. Temmie know the amount of deaths. And your soul fill wirh dettemienation and not determination in the place.

Oh my god, this entire time I've seen asgores battle sprite as having a creepy eyeless smile and I was always super confused about it, but I just now saw his actual face in the sprite

the first time I saw Asgore’s sprite, I thought he was wearing a helmet.
I think Papyrus "knows" too, but he doesn't actually _know,_ he just remembers random stuff and has a feeling about it. At one of the neutral routes, I think when you save only Sans and Papyrus, he says something about wanting you to bring back his friends. He's not directly saying to reset, but he is asking you to do something about it, which means he probably knows you can do something about it.
Maybe hes gotten a hint or two from Sans lol

When you think about it, Asgore didn't just beat down the other humans, he beat them so hard he made them give up and that's how they got captured.

My personal interpretation of this line was that Asgore knows about the ability humans have from Alphys or someone so that its more that he’s just heard about the ability and believes you, but doesnt actually know when they reset.

@Joshua_Aaron1307 I mean Flowey makes it pretty clear that after Frisk fell down, he couldn’t reset anymore. It is a power for the especially determined. Also while the reset ability may be powerful in a tactical way, the waterfall plaques go hard on saying that human souls are just physically stronger, with the reset being a biproduct of that determination.

We're on the same page, all im saying is that having a fan interpenetration of how the war went shouldn't be seen as evidence for something, which is why I didn't use that argument in the first comment. Any sort of stretch is a big stretch because if you get one theory wrong, your whole understanding can be wrong.

@@syrap6330 other humans can reset its for people with the right amount of determination which it would seem all humans have enough of automatically which would actually explain how all the humans managed to survive during the war because they’d just reset and so none of them died. Chances are the reason the other humans died and stayed dead is because after dying repeatedly they slowly lose their determination and gave up which is pretty sad when you think about it especially since they were just children
Plus what about Asgore encouraging you when you get a game over?

That’s just Chara’s memories which we have access to because of the shared soul. He’s not actually talking to u in GameOver
Papyrus seems to be aware of them too. In one ending, while he's on the phone with you talking about his friends that you killed, he says something like "can you bring them back? I know you can."
Edit: thanks to help in the replies, turns out this happens in the ending where you only kill mettaton. Papyrus is on the phone with you and he says Undyne is distressed because you’re the reason Alphys (implied that she took her own life after Mettaton died) and Asgore are both gone. Then he says, “can you bring them back? If you made them disappear? Please bring them back.” Who knows, this could mean he knows about resets. Or he’s just holding on to false hope that they’re still around.

He also knows when sans is pranking you across time and space.........yeah hes probably just as aware of them as sans is, just not as knowing of the specifics of how the resets work
I think is not cause he is ACTUALLY aware, he just is soo heartbroken that denies his friends are gone forever and as a last resource, called frisk and though frisk could bring them back, similar to how people wish they could bring back their loved ones

@@toilet9994 Ya know, I think Undyne's ability to gain determination through will has something to do with her eye (the one behind the eye patch). Because after we get her into her Undying form, the eye patch falls off and a beam of light (that looks like a reverse spear) begins to flash out of her eye periodically

@@toilet9994 Undyne being the only one who can create determination from willpower would be narratively unsatisfying, because the thing that makes undyne so remarkable is that she's a peoples hero.
She's one, plucked out of the masses and forced to stand up against inevitable fate.
If she was something incredibly special from the get-go, that would dampen the impact and turn the story undyne the undying tells from one of unparalleled courage and self-sacrifice to a less impactful "chosen one versus eternal evil".

It's just a bunch of pixels, but his sad smile when he turns to face you in that corridor always gets me.
I like to imagine everyone else who can detect resets is annoyed by them, and everytime frisk gets stuck on a boss it's hell lol
The saddest part about it is that since he knows about resets, it doesn't matter if anyone else kills the human and takes their soul. He knows that eventually, he's going to fight them as if it were destiny. That's why he gives the human the option to go back and finish anything they might still want to do before fighting.
I like this theory. Asgore is a really smart guy who, likely due to his depression, reduced himself to a buffoon. So obviously, if someone like a king actually knew about resets, they would inform the public, and devise a logical plan to counteract it. But Asgore can barely bring himself to fight for his life, so of course he did nothing.
finally someone is talking about this! A lot of people just overlook asgore when talking about resets and just focus on sans and flowey instead. Not to mention the other humans having the ability to reset and asgore being the one to kill all of the humans, a lot of people think they never had resets and died to other monsters

On a somewhat related note gerson breaks the 4th wall by actively acknowledging the fact you can't fight shopkeepers in the genocide route.
In the No Mercy route, Gerson implies the reason he's in the shop is because he knows the game won't let you kill him in that GUI.

I feel like Mettaton might also be aware of resets. In the Oh My Love section, there’s a certain lyric to pay attention to. “They’ll put you in the dungeon. It’ll suck, and then you’ll die a lot.” Die A LOT, huh? Does he know it won’t be a one-and-done deal and you’ll die multiple times?

He does, however, have the ability to change your game window's name. Not even flowey can do that.

This is intriguing, but yet it raises the scary question...
Why/when did the other souls stop resetting?
Maybe he acknowledges you're the last one and doesn't want to manipulate your soul in being wholly collected or maybe the other humans willingly gave theirs up in the world of monsters.
The other souls were not able to reset if they were flowey would lose his ability to reset, if Asgore knows is because boss monsters don't age

All evidence suggests flowey was created long after the 6 humans fell down so that point doesn't make much sense.
Resetting is innately linked to Determination, essentially the will to keep going.
Simply put, they died so many times they lost the will to keep trying and gave up.

Honestly, Sans can’t detect them either. He just knows so much about them he is able to product things and read peoples faces really well. Flowey is the only one who actually experiences resets
I think sans confuses you with flowey, since in his fight he talks about you as if you had done a thousand and one resets, when it may only be your first route in the game, and canonically the only character that we know has reset so much and the time he has fought against sans so many times is flowey

We know that resets have an effect on monsters thanks to certain dialogue like this one:
"When humans fall down here, strangely... I... I often feel like I already know them. Truthfully, when I first saw you, I felt... ... like I was seeing an old friend for the first time." - Toriel
Which means that Sans likely gets a similar feeling when it happens... and since he knows what those feelings mean, he can semi-reliably tell how many happened when combined with his skill at discerning the humans facial expressions.

Temmie also talks about number of losses (everytime you die) while explaining the Temmie Armor (you will get it once you pay her for her college), she mentions that she will lower the price everytime you lose and reload.

Sans usually just seems to notice enough to, combined with the déjà vu, put the pieces together.
Asgore just seems to act like he either already knew that he already killed you once or that he just knows it can happen and so is not surprised by you doing it.
I would like for you to respectfully give me more proof about this statement as all neutral endings is mostly about Sans purposely telling you the state of the underground in order to gaslight you to making a reset.
This being said there is a little evidence for him remembering resets. If you do a genocide run and after you die a bunch to sans. If you then RESET and do genocide all over again, when you get to sans he resumes his ‘expression of someone who died X times in a row’
Based on his dialogue, he doesn’t remember, but the machinery in his lab reads when a reset happens.

I just dont like how people make him overly aware or completely unaware of reset when there are multiple evidences that he fits right in the middle.
@@WomfyXD Oh no, I’m not disputing that he knows that we wield the reset power, and that he has a decent knowledge on temporal anomalies, after all, he is essentially a different kind of anomaly. I was just saying that like any other character, he can’t remember resets, only determined beings can. Asgore is only aware of the reset power because he’s fought 5 humans before, and it’s pretty clear from how resetting humans fight that they have done that before.
When asgore takes out his trident to destroy the mercy button, did anyone originally see it as a smile?

I think it was intentional and that it was supposed to look like some kind of demonic smile, reflecting what Asgore has to be and what he actually is.

Actually, it's just that his face is half-covered. He feels sorry for killing the humans that fell to the underground and use their souls to break the barrier that he doesn't even want to look at you. He destroyed the mercy button because he thinks he doesn't deserve mercy after what he did.

I always interpreted this as him just in denial about it. When Frisk tells him that they have died before he might be nodding because he had killed multiple kids before Frisk. It’s like he thought Frisk said “You’ve killed kids like me before”
I think this is the correct interpretation. It fits the theme of his character way more than "Omg asgore knows about resets!!!1!!"

I find it very interesting that Asgore is the only character you actively say something about dying by their hands before. It’s almost like your character wants Asgore to know about the reset.
Toriel supports this theory as she mentions she has had "deja vu" with the other humans who had fallen down, almost 100% proving this.
The line also changes the more you keep dying. I think after three or four times he "nods solemnly", or something like that if i remember correctly.

The past humans can't reset. The creature with the greatest determination had the ability to reset. With their own skill the past humans made it all the way to Asgore without dying. Flowey held the monopoly on the power of resets until Frisk showed up

Flowey got his Determination *from* the deceased humans. Logically, if small injections of the substance from him allowed him to Reset, they also possessed that power. There's even further evidence in-game to support this.

Too add. The reason Chara didn't reset because she willingly let Asriel absorb her soul so he can reach the surface world. Upon which he got attacked by humans who he refused to kill and later died back into the underground.

Flowey said he had killed every monster except Asgore. This means that Asgore has the power to kill all monsters except himself. Perhaps Asgore didn't give it his all in the final fight of the normal route

I’m so glad this is getting recognized! I always wondered why people pushed Asgore to the side when mentioning characters who were aware of the SAVE file. Also, sans isn’t aware of SAVEing. He just guesses based off of our expressions, like during the Hotland hangout, but he definitely knows they exist.

Sans and flowey are the only ones who seem to actually know your resets; but yeah people weirdly always seem to forget that king Asgore must have either requested or approved of Alphys (the *royal* scientist)'s experiments on Determination, and thus would certainly know about the 'power to change fate'.
Although you do have to be the one to count your death's out to Asgore, there's no way he wouldn't know (or even be particularly surprised by) the fact that the human can come back after dying.
Especially so if it's a human that managed to get all the way through the underground, and even past Undyne, to reach that point to fight him.

He probably does not totally know about resets and save&load,but the past himans probably said something like frisk,so at this point,weather he thinks it's time travel,or sometjing else,he just knows it can happen.
Just a reminder that Frisk and Chara are the only humans that entered the underground who possessed the power/soul of determination. No other human is able to reset, or else they wouldn't have died to Asgore at all. Only reason why Chara was not able to reset after their death, is because it was literally absorbed by Asriel.
Flowey got his Determination from one of the six human souls and since he can reset that means other humans also could do it
Not to mention how Asgore can acknowledge the UI and shatter the Mercy button.
As does mettaton, when dying to his EX form when you return to the room he asks you wether you want to hear his the same dialogue and what-not again or just skip back to his battle. Apparantly everyone forgot about that also

I don’t think Asgore really knows what Frisk is saying, but instead takes the line more figuratively. I think he nods sadly because he has indeed killed every human in Frisk’s situation (humans who fell into the underground) despite knowing none of them deserved to die.
Plus he has regular deja vu like any other monster can have, so it stacks on this feeling.
Nah Undyne actually said that all the other humans didn’t even reach Asgore. So none were killed by him.

I agree to some extent as sans never talks openly about resets like flowey does. But after you die to him in the genocide route he remembers killing you and can even recall the amount of times he’s killed you and I feel like that can’t be overlooked.

Thats deja-vu. Every character has cases of deja-vu with you in a second run. If this was the case, then everyone would know about resets.

It's possible since he hired gaster but I dont think so. The dialogue where you say hes killed you once before and his reaction is probably him remembering killing the other humans as he sees them all like the first human his adopted human child. That's why you see him telling you to stay determined in the game over screen. He sees his child in every human that falls down there. He nods sadly because hes in a constant state of seeing himself kill that first human again and again.
I was expecting a much weaker argument than that, but wow. It's really just right there.

They're literally synonyms, Perseverance would be the only trait to be able to save and load if that was true. All humans could save, load and reset if they were the most determined ones. That's literally the only thing you need to be able to.
Asgore knows about them, Sans can detect them, but only Flowey can remember past resets (as far as I can tell). Sans and Asgore don't fight differently when you die to them, and they show no evidence of remembering past resets, only knowing about their existence. Sans knows how many times you died, but that just means he can tell when a reset happens, not necessarily remember what happened before. Flowey doesn't change his attacks either, but he very clearly remembers past resets. So basically far as I can tell Sans and Asgore know about them but don't remember what exactly happened.
I like to theorize that the other humans simply gave up on resetting and that’s why they are dead

Technically, it would be flowey, chara, asgore, and temmie. As sans never actually knows about resets, only goes by assumption, and judges your facial expression for how many times you die. Flowey and chara both have determination, so that ones obvious. Asgore does know about resets and retries, and the shopkeeper temmie tells how many times you died without judging your expression
Asgore has dealt with six other humans and has likely died many times to them. While most charecters imply that they seem to remember something vaguely about past timelines, only the most powerful ones like sans, flowey and asgore (also alphys for some reason) remember them clearly... Asgore avtually may not remember past timelines, but its likely sans, alphys or even flowey himself have already informed him of how it all works. The most likely options are sans in the genocide route, warning the king about the human's approach and basically telling him to give up, or alphts out of fear and love for asgore and the whole of the underground. The less likely option is that before frisk came, flowey attempted to kill ashore in many, many timelines after an eternity of boredom and insanity. This would explain why sans seems to have a past of killing flowey in previous timelines, untill finally flowey got wiser and threatened to hurt papyrus, whispering things to him to relay to sans so that sans couldn't hurt flowey without losing his most precious thing: his brother. Sans may have originally been a member of the royal guard untill flowey forced papyrus to be, because papyrus would be too weak to defend the king... This would go on for several timelines untill sans got into his "give up" mood, finally realizing how pointless it was... Flowey strongarmed sans so he could finally start breaking through the royal guard, steal the other human souls, and start many, many genocide files. This is why his playtime and LV is so high at the fake savepoint before the Photoshop flowey bossfight. Its also likely that sans was asgore''s personal guard before flowey strongarmed him, explaining why all those humans were killed by asgore, and also explaining why we can kill him so easily.
What about Metatton? He allows you to skip stuff when he knows you've already seen it, and in his song, he says, "And then you'll die a lot."

Would make sense that he knows about it due to Alphys/Gaster's research and Sans was probably also involved in said research.
And interesting fact is all of them where conected to Ga$¥€r. Sans... we all know too well, probably part of family and even maybe he was leping him in his experiments. Flowey was made in His lab and was controling timeline in the past, and at last Agore. He probably know Him well, G@$¥€# was working for h!m so ...
No no Sans does not know exactly when a reset happens, he doesn’t retain the memories of what happened he can just read the character’s facial expression depending on the situation, like when it appears they’ve heard his speech before in the judgement hall or how he can accurately guess how many times you’ve died before.
Flowey on the other hand can and does know exactly when a reset happens cause he retains all the memories from before it happened
One small correction:
When you said near the end that Flowey & Sans can detect resets, that's only true for Flowey. While Sans is aware of resets, he doesn't know when one happens unless he notices something odd, such as Frisk's quick actions and expressions.
The other humans have no determination in their souls, so they couldnt save and reset

I don't think he knows about that. I always interpreted this dialogue as if he sees in Frisk the children he has already killed. So when Frisk says "You killed me once", "You killed me three times" Asgore just thinks back at how many times he's been in that situation throughout the years, how many "Charas" he has sacrificed.
Also I just noticed every time you try to play hard mode, at the end of the fight with Toriel Toby fox appears and says "That's the end of it!" And then later on he says to Toriel "Aren't you supposed to die?" Then Toriel says "If it's the end why do it anyway."
The smash of the "mercy" button at the start is also a big sign that he knows.
Temmie is also aware. She knows how much to discount her temmie armor depending on your death amount
