It seems like such a waste to not use anything from Twickenham for the boxset. They expect people to make such a ginormous investment in these boxsets when they don't put everything necessary on them. It's pretty much why I steered clear of this last one.

    • @ChromeDestiny

I feel like on this one and a bit on the White Album box they're punishing the fans for collecting bootlegs. The White Album box set should have had the take 20 version of Revolution and the Let it Be Box should have had stuff like the Castle of the King of The Birds jam.

    • @buckdancer4033

They didn’t completely ignore Twickenham in the boxset.
The rehearsals of I Me Mine, Gimme Some Truth and Concentrate On The Sound were all from Twickenham.
But I agree they could’ve used more.

Hello Matt. Another home run in both concept and presentation. I like the fact that you are not overly concerned with
audio quality. If the song, or snippet of a song has potential, it's fun to hear it. It's usually only non Beatles fans that complain
about "scraping the bottom of the barrel" and other such slurs. We are at a time in history that all of these incompleted gems
are precious reminders of the once in a lifetime synergy of four ordinary guys from an unusual place who shook the world.
One other such compilation that may genuinely surprise fans is the terrific "at the beeb" vol. 3 that one of your fellow tubers has compiled. It's honestly worthy of an official release. Your efforts have the value added fun of the excellent cover art work that you provide. Very sharp indeed.

I like your "What if..." albums. I do the same with playlists. Create a narrative and assemble songs. If you squint your eyes (ears?) you can fool yourself that it's a Beatles album. John said people should compile solo work and make their own albums. I disagree. The whole was greater than the sum of their parts with the Beatles. In your review of Ram, there was a comment that the songs needed the John "edge.". All of their solo work, while good, could have been great with the influence of the other 3.
I like hearing the other Beatles take the lead vocal on these songs. It's fun to hear their different interpretations. I wish a Lennon take of Oh Darling! existed.
Thanks for the channel. It's great to geek out on.

It would have been nice to have seen the Beatles stick it out for another 2 or 3 years. There was so much good stuff put out on Imagine, Plastic Ono Band, McCartney, Ram and ATMP.
I'm convinced it (the breakup) was due mostly to Klein.

    • @ChromeDestiny
      @ChromeDestiny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I agree that was the major issue, also although Yoko wasn't the total cause of The Beatles' breakup it was an issue and would have just become a bigger issue over time. Also I think they didn't take a long enough break after The White Album. Taking a proper breather to do solo projects and get Apple and business stuff sorted would have been a big help.

Great video, Matt, thank you. Your inclusion of Let It Down brought to mind the Wikipedia entry for Wah-Wah. Under the paragraph titled “January 1969 at Twickenham Film Studios” it describes the argument between Paul and George during “Two of Us,” but also John and George regarding John deriding several songs that George brought to the initial sessions, and of course, more issues with Paul’s overbearing behavior. Also mentioned are George’s issues with Ono speaking for John and her constant presence. It says that George was the lone Beatle who voiced objections to Ono’s presence. Ultimately, there was supposedly a severe argument between George and John during lunch on January 10 in which George berated John for contributing nothing positive to the sessions. At the end of the day, January 10, George quit the band.
There is also mention of John and Yoko going to see George on Saturday morning, and then the band meeting at Ringo’s house on Sunday.
Since you’ve listened to the Nagra tapes, and have the Sulpy and Schweighardt book, are you able to confirm any of this? If true, it does change the narrative from what we see in “Get Back” and certainly paints a clearer picture.

    • @popgoesthe60s52
      @popgoesthe60s52  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I am not aware of a visit to George by John and Yoko on Saturday and the Suply-Schweighardt book makes no mention of it. I don't see how that would change the narrative because it appears to be a move to make amends and get George back. I have great hope that the Mark Lewisohn Vol III will touch upon these issues in greater detail, but we'll have to wait for them!

    • @tsamantas
      @tsamantas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I missed that January 11 fact. Hmph! There's a site with the actual page from George's diary recording that on January 11, "“Got up - John and Yoko came and diverted me at Breakfast.” Since George had in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" rhymed and associated diverted with perverted and inverted, and considering he was still firmly out of the band, that's not a positive entry at all. Every time I think, gee, I know quite a bit about the Beatles, BOOM!, a fact pops up, even one that I should've paid attention to, that I just flat out missed. Well! No wonder Mark Lewisohn is taking a long long long (pun) time to release Vol.2. Here's the site: theymaybeparted.com/2021/04/20/jan-11-how-he-was-diverted/

You make so many valid points. It seems to be a bit of a missed opportunity. Here is my scenario for a May 15 1969 Get Back LP release. Using existing mixes at the time. My one caveat is imagining George Martin taking the same songs Phil Spector scored and scoring them himself over the months of March and April,1969. Side 1 (Using all studio versions) The Ballad of John And Yoko Old Brown Shoe Two Of Us Across The Universe* For You Blue The Long And Winding Road* You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) Side 2 Get Back** Don't Let Me Down** I've Got A Feeling** One After 909** Dig A Pony** I Me Mine* Let It Be* The single being the studio versions of Get Back and Don't Let Me Down (*Arranged/Scored by George Martin) (** Rooftop) I know I Me Mine wasn't finished till early 1970. Greetings Matt ✌ This Episode should be called:Box Sets that Never were, and in the case of the Let it Be Box set that I and Other Beatle fans waited for with great anticipation last year, it is for me very underwhelming and I consider it the most dissapointing of all The Beatle Box sets that have been released, I feel That Apple really dropped the ball Big time on this set and as you have shown Matt in this video with your fantastic selection of Get Back/Let it Be songs this could have been a real treasure trove and the Mother of All Box sets had Apple given us More unrealeased gems, especially That great version of All Things Must Pass.

This could have been release in separate pieces: The remix, roof top performance, Glyn Johns mixes in one set and all the alternate takes, rehearsals and unreleased songs in a second box. Apple seems to be trying to release a simplistic version that appeals to the most people in various configurations. They are not taking care of the rabid fan. On the other hand, we have box set of f*cking Wild Life and Wings At the Speed of Sound! Where's the justice?

I’ve always been frustrated by the lack of music releases by Apple. The Beatles fans are the only fanbase who get treated with such disregard. There are two things that we can all agree upon. First none of us is getting younger and secondly the Beatles have attained a point where they belong to history. Like most other historical treasures their tapes should now be donated to a nation archive like the library of congress of a British equivalent. They can maintain and preserve these tapes for future generations rather than sitting in a dusty basement as the Let it Be reels were. Then these tapes are available to anyone who wishes to listen to them. However if Apple still has monetary desires then release them all online in either a monthly subscription model or an Apple model where you can purchase any take of any song you wish. I’m tired of the drip by drip releases by Apple and then which take to release decided by Giles Martin who can be described as a pseudo fan at best. With Ringo and Paul both in their 80’s it’s finally time to let the Beatles fans have it all. The Stones and Dylan have long emptied their vaults.

I am completely in the dark as to how the 4 Beatle estates will handle business going forward. The key word I guess is "business" since the Beatles assets are treated as if it is only product to be sold and not historical artifacts to be shared and revered.

The unfinished songs give your brain a musical workout because you spend the time imagining how it might have been put together. And, of course , there’s the transient brilliance that just goes with the Beatles recording anything, even for a laugh.

That's correct - and also it is a truly amazing song compared to all the other pop/rock happening at that period - Buddy Holly really was a ground breaker so no surprise how influential he was not only on The Beatles, but thousands of others who followed in the 60s and onwards.

    The Beatles...
    Basement Tapes:
In some important ways, better than Let It Be AND Get Back...
    put together and a/part...
and not coincidently (given my enthusiasm), what I also thought should always have been done with all those recovered 'lost' tapes of those extraordinary sessions at the end of '68/beginning of '69 once I heard them strewn about all over TH-cam like leftover shards from a blown-over 'once in-a century' storm and shipwreck treasure of musical artifacts...
    back to the past.
    "Sunset doesn't last all evening..."
Sounds like the actual grungy "nails and rust and dirt and bits" "raw" album they actually intended and wanted to make back in '69 (no George Martin, remember?).
This dude may not know it, but he may have "produced' the Beatles last great album...and even without use of AI (which would probably make this collection universally accessible and the critics' last chance to praise the genius of the Beatles to those who expect stylized "clean" studio "cuts").
And all this when so many there at the time insisted on seeing their growth as a demise, a debacle and 'a disaster"(including John Lennon, erroneously...a mistake that in effect ended his prowess as an artist soon after)...
the need to tear down what we love that "great".
The creativity, diversity, excitement, spontaneity, fun, breadth and depth of virtuoso musicianship and voice mix, the range of feelings bared and probed as they're explored so lyrically tenderly and instrumentally nuanced, the experimentation in genre and cross-play and the pure delight and joy in the love of the originals that inspired them as kids is, as usual when it comes to these guys...
    breathtakingly Beatlesque.
'In the morning, it all fades away".
And this gem of a mix is one more reason to welcome the sun even after that....
    especially after that...
    and before it, too.
Some things, like this amazing alive album full of additional songs (or their 'bits, tads and tits'), some never put on the record (or even in either of the two films) that 'never was' must live...
    even after they've passed.
Like the music and the lads that inspired it...
this thing's a work of love...
and one last way to fondly remember the greatness of the Beatles' music by.
Great job, Matt, and thank you.

The box set had five criminal omissions. 1. Rooftop concert. 2. Hard Rock version of "Two Of Us". 3. Hard Rock version of "Get Back". 4. Best band take of "All Things Must Pass" and 5. "Suzy's Parlour. I did like the alternate version of "One After 909" and the, "there will be no sorrow" take of Let It Be. Those were nice surprises. But, all in all, The Let It Be box set ended up being the only Beatles box set so far, that I'd consider sub-standard. The Pepper one was great. The Abbey Road one was good. The White Album one was incredible, and a home run. The Let It Be box would have also been great if they'd added nearly all of your suggestions to it. Yours is a good compilation!

I don't think anymore video will be released unless it was withheld from the Disney+ and that wouldn't be for a long time. It's got to be too expensive to continue.
I was also disappointed in the 4 re-releases. I would've liked to see bonus discs of Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, All You Need is Love, etc on Pepper, Hey Jude, Revolution & Lady Madonna with the White Album, and The Ballad of John & Yoko with Abbey Road. Bonus EP's would've been perfect.

I will never understand the selections for the Let it Be box set sessions discs. So much other material was more interesting than what was included. Very odd. And MAL was used to demix and remix conversations in the film, they could have used the same process to make stereo mixes of the best Twickenham material for the box set. Like Palace of the King of the Birds was remixed and used for the Get Back credits, but not in the box set?! Makes no sense.

Matt, went to see Paul McCartney last night (5/31) in Knoxville. There were a lot of young (I'm 63) Beatle fans there. My take was I'm glad I went, but It was an expensive endeavor and I wouldn't go again, perhaps I'm not the fan I thought I was. There were plenty there, and that was good to see. I went with my sister, and we had a good time together, we have the shared experience of playing The Beatles as we grew, so that was nice enough.
Paul talked a bit from stage, as I guess is normal, he was speaking about Hendrix covering the Sargent Pepper album the first weekend it was released. I would attend a gathering like that again, Paul and Ringo talking and maybe going over the Get Back sessions and playing some music without hitting the high notes, just play and reminisce. But both Paul and Ringo appear to be healthy and can still perform, so why not hit the road with new material. The stadium was full and the fans were exuberant.
I did feel something when he performed Blackbird, the effects were well done and he sang it well.
