    I just started my Bachelor of Cyber Security and Information Assurance yesterday all thanks to you, I hope I can graduate in six months. I finished all my general ed classes and went straight to the core classes of the degree. I used Sophia learning and Coursera to finish all my general ed courses to use as Transfer credit. I would watch this video a couple of times just to make sure I can get as much done before starting. Shooting to finish by March 2023. There are more classes and certifications added for the 2022 year. I hope you can make an updated video of this program in the future.

      Hey Denisse. I would try to get CompTIA Security+ (or at least study the material for it) before enrolling. That curriculum will provide the foundation for information security and will make a lot of things more easy to understand in the future. For free content, I might recommend professor messer. For some nice paid content, I'd recommend CBT nuggets!

      CBT Nuggets Security+: www.cbtnuggets.com/it-training/comptia/security-plus
      In addition to this, for fun, I'd recommend listening to All of Darknet Diaries podcast episodes (if you find that you like them). Super entertaining, and really gives you insight into the world of cybersecurity.

I definitely want to enroll into this program. I just started this week by taking some external courses with fundamentals of this area on HarvardX, edX and Skills academy. I kind of want to get as much knowledge as I can before I enroll into WGU so it takes me less time to complete the courses and less money spent, but once I get to be in, this spreadsheet will definitely be of great value!

    Merry Christmas Josh, I hope you and your family have a Happy Holidays. I'm just now seeing this video, after speaking with you on your other video about "How to get a Degree in 6 Months| (WGU Bachelor's or Master's." It was about obtaining some CompTIA certs, if I transfer to WGU. RIght now I'm trying to get my B.S. in Cyber Security, I was planning on transfering to WGU afterwards to go for my Masters. Now I'm thinking about transfering next summer to WGU to go for my B.S. there and then my Masters. I have my A+ and Net+, I would like a chance to get the other ones under my belt. The school I'm in now, most of the professor don't believe I should obtain certifications for the career field in cyber security. Now, I'm considering to go to WGU in the summer, by then I should have 114 credits. Can you give me some advice on this matter, or should I transfer before the start of the Spring 2022 term?

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Happy Holidays to you too! Thank you so much!
      _>The school I'm in now, most of the professor don't believe I should obtain certifications for the career field in cyber security. _
      I wonder what their reasons for this is? Sounds kinda strange that professors would say this. As to whether or not you should transfer, I would at least get in touch with an enrollment counselor and have them evaluate your current transcript to see what things look if you were to enroll. I tend to recommend WGU to people since you can save so much time and money. I think certs play an integral role in getting that first job. Of course you can get by without them, but they help so much initially.
      Check out this video if you haven't already: How to get into cyber from zero (checklist): th-cam.com/video/a83ASGn_V_s/w-d-xo.html
      FWIW a BS with Certs is generally _much_ better than a BS and MS with no certs. Best of luck!

    Hello, thank you so much for your video! I have Sec+ cert through the military for my job as well as 2 associates degree (Health Science and Cyber Security CCAF). Do you believe its wise to get some of those certs on my own so I don't accumulate classes while I am doing WGU? or do you think those multiple certs at a time wont overwhelm/burn me out if I try to get 3 certs per semester? I did Sec + in two weeks at Tech School. It was a little difficult, but I managed a 780 on the Security+ exam.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello bro! It depends on your skills if you can take multiple certifications at a time. but, it is better to focus on one certification then move on to the other or if you are enroll in any course, just finish them first then take the certifications. i don't think you can absorb all of them at the same time and for you not get burned out easily :)

    I'll be starting this degree on November 1st. I really appreciate this video. I'll be transferring the A+, N+, and S+ in so that should save me some time. I have a feeling the Project+ is going to be one of the first certs I'll have to go through in this degree.
    What are your thoughts on that cert, and as far as the test goes where would you rank it compared to the other comptia tests you've taken in terms of difficulty?
    Thanks for the content I appreciate it.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Justen, congrats, and good for you bringing in all those certs. Project+ sucked a lot for me and I really struggled with it mostly because it was so boring. It wasn't that hard, being a CompTIA cert, it was just super hard to study. Maybe like a 4/10 difficulty. These days, I would probably use Anki to study and commit the boring stuff to memory. Assuming you have the time, I might recommend beginning to study for it now, so that once you register, you don't have to spend your precious time-in-term studying for it, and you can just take it immediately. Google for this and see if you can find anything good: PK0-004 site:quizlet.com
      Best of luck!

      Hey CJ! All of the tests are online. Typically, you'll clear your room of people, lock the door, and clear your desk of things, position the webcam in a a way where it captures your screen and you, and take the test as someone watches. It's pretty straightforward. Hope this helps :>

I’ve been saving up money now that I can work full time at a restaurant but plan on enrolling next winter. But I wanted to know what I could do in the meantime to get better in the field. Should I learn to code? Which language would be better to learn?

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Raul! Congrats to you! To get better in the field, in the mean time, you could:
      a) Study the CompTIA Security+ curriculum from Professor Messer (free) or CBTNuggets (this one costs money)
      b) Do some beginning courses on HackTheBox.
      c) Do the eJPT (junior pentester) course from INE.
      d) Listen to Darknet Diaries podcast, just to get mentally into the field
      I always recommend people to learn code, as for the language, if I had to pick a language on the spot, I would probably recommend you learn python. However I will say, when you learn one language, it becomes super easy to learn the next one. The hardest thing about learning programming is more conceptual and less to do with the language, so once you learn one, it's easy to just jump languages.
      Best of luck! And thanks for watching :)

I'm curious if you think getting the broader Computer Science degree, working in the field, and then later independently going to get some of the certifications that come with this degree would open up similar opportunities in the cyber security field. Thanks for all the informative videos!

      Hey Bruno! Yep, that's the same one. What I did for it, is just study a bunch of random practice questions I found on the internet prior to enrolling. Then once I was enrolled, I just immediately took the cert for free and passed it, haha.
      Here is somewhere to start: quizlet.com/561875974/ceh-v11-flash-cards/
      In addition. just make sure you know all of the nmap commands, and maybe check out what other people on reddit are saying about it.

    WGU Accelerated IT Bachelor's and Masters Program vs Cybersecurity program Oct 1 HELP!
    I am starting in Oct 1 and I need advice on what degree to pursue. WGU Accelerated IT Bachelor's and Masters Program vs Cybersecurity program BA. I was looking at certifications and it looks like the accelerated program has all the certifications of cyber and more. I want to eventually go into cybersecurity, currently I have no IT experience. I was wondering what would be a more complete slash better degree to work on. Also would it be a good idea to do accelerated plus then a masters in cyber. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Doing the Accelerated program (BS+MS) is going to be faster than just doing the cyber BS alone. The cyber BS is a bit tough because of the certs. If you really want to get a masters degree, I would probably go with the accelerated program. If you really feel like going hard into cyber afterwards, you can just pick up some extra certs (such as PNPT or CISSP, etc.). I honestly wouldn't recommend getting a second masters degree unless you just want to have it. Hope this helps!

I have NO computer experience but I am VERY interested in joint the Info Sec community and getting a job in security. My question is, what do you think a REALISTIC timeframe would be from started classes at WGU to starting my first job in cyber? Most people answer this with another question. I’m just looking for a “spitball” idea of time. An educated guess, if you will. Thanks!

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Jonathan! From the time you start, you can probably have a job less than 6 months without graduating.
      There are kinda some caveats, but this is what I would do, *assuming you are talking about the Cybersecurity and Information Assurance degree):
      1. (2 months) Before joining WGU, pre-game hard study CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+. Spend a bit of money if you have to (CBT Nuggets, Dion, Professor Messer)
      2. (1 month) Enroll at WGU and do the initial course load (3 classes) your mentor gives you (blaze through these, using reddit to strategize)
      3. (2 weeks) Ask mentor to open the Security+ class next, polish off your pre-game knowledge with their provided material/pre-assessment and pass the assessment
      4. (1 month) Do the same for Network+ and A+
      *
      Now you are sitting with the CompTIA Trifecta on your Resume
      *
      5. (1 month) While still attending classes, build a portfolio with 2-3 of my security projects (links at the bottom of this comment), or your WGU coursework, construct your resume.
      6. (1+ month) While still attending classes, start applying for a LOT of IT and entry-level cyber jobs.
      7. Land job and take your time completing the degree
      It's important to start getting experience asap, so don't necessarily pass up a "normal" IT job for a cyber job. All IT jobs have some aspect of security in them. Just something to think about :)

      Hey Anthony, thanks for watching! This is definitely a good degree to go for, as it will teach you a lot of the basics of IT as well as a rounded body-of-knowledge for cyber security. The only caveat to this is this degree is a bit more difficult than most of the other BS degrees that WGU offers due to the sheer number of certifications. If I was seriously considering it, I might try to get CompTIA Security+ on my own to see if it's something like doing (self-studying security stuff and see if you enjoy security in general). I don't think you realize how many classes you'd have left after transferring all eligible classes from your completed BS Computer Science. I thought the same thing to myself, and realized that out of the 122 Credits to complete the BS Cybersecurity only 62 credits will be satisfied leaving a whopping 60!! left to complete!! Think about it, after the general education classes and basic IT classes the thing that separates the two degrees are certs like sec+, net+, pentest+ etc. If you're absolutely dead set on getting a comp sci degree then I would just get those certifications (that you learn in the cyber degree) on my own outside of WGU, there's no point in having two Bachelor degrees. My conclusion was to just do the Cyber degree and learn more coding (like Python) on my own after the degree.

      I don't want to dissuade you from your decision, as bootcamps can provide some merit, but a cyber degree from WGU will cost you 14k if you manage to take 24-months (can be done faster), and you will exit the program with a bachelor's degree and around 10 good certs. IMO, that bootcamp is too expensive unless your company or the govt is paying for it.
      I also don't recommend the bootcamp unless the guarantee job placement or don't require payment until you get a job.

      If you prefer speed, definitely the IT general into Cyber MS will be faster.
      If you prefer marketability, probably the BSCyber into Cyber MS will be better.
      I have a couple videos nailing these points home:

      Which BS from WGU is easiest: th-cam.com/video/HEQbB_e8UMA/w-d-xo.html

      I have strong opinion that your formal education doesn't generally make your break you in terms of getting into the field. That hinges a bit more on your resume, portfolio, projects, and passion. (and networking if you want to count that!)

    Hey Josh, were you working while attending? My biggest concern is not being able to focus exclusively on getting as many classes done as possible per term.

      Hey Brady! I didn't do this degree program, but I was working throughout all of my jobs. I will say though, however, all of the jobs I had allowed me a lot of time to study. I also prioritized my study during these times too. It will be hard to do if you are, for example, a police officer where you can't really study at work. but if you're working some kinda clerical slow desk job, things get easier :)

    Hi Josh
    I was considering going into WGU's master's in cybersecurity program, because I already have a bachelor's degree in health, but I'm considering going for WGU's bachelor's in cybersecurity. I'm currently studying for my associate's degree in IT and I wasn't sure if I should just go ahead and go for their master's degree because it would make me more marketable, but I also saw that the bachelor's in cybersecurity program has a NCAE designation but the master's does not. Do you think this designation and the certs from the bachelor's program would make it more marketable and valuable than the master's?
    In my situation where I already have a bachelor's degree, do you think the master's is better because it could save me some time?
    I'm also currently working full-time as an IT support specialist so I'm not sure since it seems like the master's program would have some advanced concepts and I just started working in IT.

      Hey Ngoc! I will say the BSCSIA (bachelors) is better than the masters in almost every way. The masters curriculum really lined up well with my 100k+ cyber jobs that I've had, but I feel the curriculum is more suited for after you're kind of already established in your career. I don't really pay attention to accreditation for IT degrees honestly, but the NCAE on the BS is a plus. However, the certs the BSCSIA offers are REALLY good, and that degree itself will help you more than the MS at this point, IMO. Having said that, since you already have a bachelors and area already working in IT, you _MIGHT_ just want to pick up some certs instead of doing a whole other BS--it's basically up to you though. I have a double bachelor's myself and I don't really regret it.
      Another option is, skipping the BS, getting a couple certs, then getting the masters, just to have it. Sorry, I said a bunch of nothing, but I hope this helps a bit haha.

    Hi Josh! Thanks for the video!
    I’m currently working at a help desk job at an MSP, but plan to start taking this degree in July. Would you say that the help desk experience plus the degree would give me a good chance at getting some sort of entry level cyber security job? (I’d say I’m fairly decent at interviewing)

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely it would. That initial experience is the hardest thing to get, but you're already good there. Just be sure to keep a record of all the stuff you do at WGU, especially any projects, and put them in your portfolio, then pot the portfolio on your resume :). After you get a few certs and class projects out of the way, I might consider starting to apply to some entry-level cyber jobs. Nobody says you have to wait until you graduate before you start looking for work. If you haven't seen it yet, check out the portfolio video: th-cam.com/video/zgqfWLHNKLk/w-d-xo.html
      Good luck! And congrats on the program :)

      I got my first wgu job during my job at the community college. My salary went from like 70k to 130k over a few years. Not sure it has anything to do with the degree though. Hope this helps!

    Hey Josh what are your thought when it comes with WGU Masters Program? I have a BA in Information Systems and a Senior Network Engineer, but I want to get into Cyber Security and digital forensic

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Cyber Master's curriculum was very realistic, at least for me who has been working previously in GRC (gov/risk/compliance). It was hyper-realistic, haha. It's pretty much the best option if you want to get a master's degree, learn something useful, and not spend a lot of time and money on it. Just my 2c though. I have a bunch of thoughts about masters degrees in general, and how they aren't _really_ necessary, but they I'm glad I got mine out of the way, haha
