I lived in Montreal for years and would always walk by Wilensky's. I knew it was kind of a heritage spot. The interior looked like it was from before WW2, and I never really saw anyone in there. I used to say it was a sandwich hot spots for all the old ghosts still milling around the Mile End neighborhood
Thank you for not cutting it in half -- that alone gives this video credibility. A Wilensky is not about 'have it your way.' You will have it their way, and you will eat it, and you will like it.
One of the best sandwiches I ever had was a "smoked meat sandwich" from Ben's in Montreal - had it plussed up with a fried egg. A stranger on the subway told us we had to try it. My son, daughter and I sat and the counter, and as we ate these the counter guys asked - would you like another? I said I bet you get a lot of takers for that!!
I used to live a block away from Wilensky’s as an undergrad in Canada and it was a classic sandwich! I used to get an egg cream with it too! Mile End Deli in Brooklyn also makes an homage to it!
Thank you for featuring a Montreal community institution. It's not luxurious but it's a good sandwich for a good price and that's rare these days. Hopefully you come visit it's a great sandwich city with lots of hidden gems!
Hey, I didn't know you took sandwiches from Menus like this, I've got a favourite to give you, also from Canada but far from Montreal. This is the "Tonqwich club" from North Face Pizza in Jasper, Alberta. toasted whole wheat bread, mayo, lettuce tomato, bacon, and the special bit is a grilled chicken breast with both cajun seasoning and teriyaki sauce, finally it's got a slice of cheddar melted on top the chicken.
since all-dressed means distinct things wherever you find it (notably the pizza toppings and the potato chip flavors arent similar), could you enlighten me. How do you all-dress a sandwich? edit: i guess with literally all-dressed chips, tbh
There is something special about the texture of a crushed sandwich. Its almost slightly fudgy and it just _feels_ naughty, even though it very much isn't. Its that sensation of "I could eat these two pizza slices separate, or I could fold them over on each other and make a pizza sandwich" and even tho they are both the same outcome, the second one just feels more like being a slobbering pizza goblin.
Most bologna I see for sale nowadays has little or no beef in it. I’m told that for a while the principal ingredient was beef heart. What’s in my local supermarkets is usually mostly chicken!
Just watched a really great documentary on Wilensky's. I grew up about an hour and a half south of Montreal. This sandwich looks way delicious! :-) - Batman.
There is something satisfying about pressing…especially here, puuuuushing the mustard into the meat in a way that would be far less likely possible with a squeeze
Thx for the video , yep looks great , for me any fried lunch meat turns up the flavour , um unless it's really hot outside then you probably want it cold with iceburg lettuce an stuff 🙂 , for the cheese think i would press it into some type of sugar maybe golden before frying it , to offset the salty lunch meat , but frying it sure is the way to go imho
The best part about Wilensky's is Wilensky's. It's an amazing time warp spot. It's a real trip back to pre-Party/Bloc Quebecois Montreal. The food is decent and not overpriced as well.

Yes! I live in Montreal. Whenever I walk by wilinskys I’m damn sure to get thier sandwich. It’s a Jewish family owned institution. They use good beef bologna and nice buns. Comes with mustard. Don’t ask for no mustard!
Irving Gas stations in the maritimes always sell this awful sandwich called "an Italian sandwich". It's a buttered hamburger bun with a thick slice of bologna, half a Kraft single, a disk of raw white onion and a pickle. No clue how it's Italian but I see it everywhere.
@fredstopford Right, eh? But this isn't a Canadian sandwich, it's a Quebec sandwich. Which is the opposite of poutine. It isn't a Quebec dish, it's a Canadian dish. Why? It was invented in one place, but the rest of the country has adopted it and makes it and loves it. The sandwich, I doubt many, if any, outside of Quebec have even heard of it. It would be like calling Honey Dill a Canadian sauce.
@@dbone3356fried baloney is popular among the older generation in Atlantic Canada as it was inexpensive back in the day. It’s extremely important to remember not to confuse this sandwich with the Lewinsky Special when ordering it in a restaurant, especially in Chappaqua, New York where I’ve heard it’s on the menu for at least one certain, VIP who I won’t name.
I was convinced from the picture on the thumbnail that it was a sandwich made with pancakes.
100% agree
Could be a "plus up " !

I'd just go to a different restaurant
They have a Swiss option at Wilensky’s too, and it is indeed delicious. Thank you for paying tribute to an institution!

Massive respect for plussing it up with an ingredient actually used at the restaurant.

A station of the cross. I do not skip it whenever I am in Montreal. With a old school cream soda and a half sour.
Can one plus it up with a side of poutine, or do sides not count?
Heck yes!
doesn't count, duh

You are welcome here anytime, my friend.
This was so simple I made it immediately. Great quick snack!

Meat, cheese and mustard - always a winner.
Can't go wrong with fried baloney! Kinda surprised Wilensky didn't give this sandwich the Canadian favorite "All Dressed" treatment.
Probably wasn't a thing when this was invented. But, I feel like that would be a great plus-up.
Or Ketchup chips.

that sandwich looks yummy. Montreal is the most beautiful city I've ever seen. You definitely need to make a business trip out there.
Wilensky's is an institution! Now we need to find you a classic Café Santropol sandwich from the wildly eclectic menu of the early '90s...
Exciting stuff!
Read my mind Barry. A slice of cheddar. Thanks. 👍👍
On Welensky's on Google, you can see various slices of cheeses. They also seem to use some english muffins as buns too.
Sliced pepperocini and spicy mustard w/swiss would be my plus-up.

Hell Yeah! Swiss and some pickled red onions. Make my mustard brown
Looks very similar to one of my favorite sandwiches. I use port roll instead of the bologna and salami..... and I definitely use swiss cheese.
I really want a pancake sandwich now. Maple syrup and bacon in the middle, now that’s Canadian
Where do you buy your shirts? I want these looks for work! Your shirts are iconic in our house.

This looks and sounds like a solid 7 sandwich. Would try.
You got my vote for President. Make sandwiches 🥪 for the world 🌎 !!
I used to go there for lunch and get it with swiss. Very strange restaurant but decent for lunch.
I would plus up with just a tiny bit of maple syrup for sweetness and a dash of hot sauce

Barry, have you done a Virginia specialty: the sailor sandwich?
Pickly pop with the beef bologna, babycakes!
Pickled onions and/or jalapeños would also be delicious.
How to tell a good sandwich: you interrupted yourself to take a second bite, and in the next shot the sandwich was gone!
I imagine some thin slices of tomato would go well on that.
provolone is the cheese you want
I was thinking that it needed cheese.😁

Not very complicated, but it doesn't need to be. That is streamlined goodness right there.
i would eat that with a crunchy dill pickle on the side!
I KNEW this needed cheese!
I thought for sure there were pancakes in the thumbnail. Imagine my disappointment lol

Wilensky's isn't known for the taste or wuality, mostly because they've been stubbornly doing this sandwich for as long as anyone can remember
Anthony bordaine liked wilinskys
That thumbnail was concerning... sounds good tho!
Nothing wrong with keeping it simple, fried pork products are super tasty. Being hungry you could have 2 or 3 just like some hot dogs
As a Canadian, I just want to say...
...I've never heard of this.

mmm
double up the meats and cook until crisp...trust me
I first read it as "Lewinsky Special" and oh boy...not sure anyone wants that!
Pickles...
oh yea flat sanwidch
I think the versions of those meats with beef only are inferior tasting to the regular kind and would only improve that sandwich if used.
That’s a sad-wich
