His name is Bill Medly, and this was no remix. No auto tuned or any of that crap. It was just pure, raw talent .

The way the producers would use these two amazing singers was genius, in my opinion. It's not that Bobby Hatfield was taking a "back seat" but more like they were pulling you in with Medly's unique vocals and then Bobby is brought in for the kill shot. The only thing that was done for this live performance video was editing out all the screaming which makes me happy. Appreciate your reaction to these two incomparable singers and we may never see another duo this perfect again for another 50 years. Thank you for keeping their music alive.

from the era of true pure talent when famous singers could really really actually sing .. no auto tuners back then . they all sounded the same in person as they did on the radio, live or on a recording

Unchained Melody, will make any girl melt...What a voice, Bobby does this one by himself...Bill didn't think it was going to be a hit-said he could kick himself for missing out on this beautiful song...This one is timeless...

This is a song about heartbreak. Bill Medley provides the drama and he really acts the song. Bobby Hatfield can sing with a slight smile on his face because he knows he can provide the vocal pyrotechnics.Their blended harmony is stunning. Phil Spector produced this performance and everything is perfection from their wardrobes to the choreographed steps and the chorus in the background (A very young Cher was in the chorus).

Bobby is actually older by a few months than Bill. The deep voice definitely gives you the “older soul” feeling about bill

“The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Greatest Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 73 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary.
“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’’ was the most played song on radio in the 20th Century
"Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965 Andy Williams Show . Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree. Bobby’s use of “Runs” is masterful. He created the style and set the table that all others have fed off of for decades. 7 notes just to say the word “I” is melodic brilliance.
Their name came from doing a show near a marine base in So Calif and a black marine said to them…. You two guys are Righteous Brothers.
In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......

This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Try "Unchained Melody" with Bobby Hatfield doing it solo. Best version ever!

This was the most played song on the airwaves of the 20th century according to BMI, which tracks these things. Bobby was actually a few weeks older than Bill Medley. Sadly, Bobby passed away in 2003. Bill is still, at the age of 81, performing with a new partner, Bucky Heard. You are correct that they weren't really brothers. Their name comes from when they were performing at a club and Black Marines from nearby El Toro Marine Base would yell things like "That's righteous, brothers."

Actually Bill Melody wanted Bobby to do this song solo(Unchained Melody) they both did solos over the years. Bobby Hatfield was the tenor voice and Bill Melody was the baritone voice they shouldn't have blended together but they did and it was pure magic. They sang from their hearts and souls. THEY were also known as The Blue Eyed Soul Bros. THIS SONG WAS PLAYED MORE TIMES THAN ANY OTHER SONG IN AMERICAN RADIO HISTORY.NO OTHER SONG EVER PLAYED MORE TIMES THAN THIS in the 20th century. No Bobby and Bill were about the same age mid twenties

Many who have commented have filled in most of the blanks here. What I will add is that this song, perhaps as much as any other, puts on full display producer Phil Spector's signature "Wall of Sound" style of production, where he would pack the studio with more musicians than could comfortably fit into the space, and then work them for hours until they were too tired to improvise much and just played the notes on the page.

Bobby Hatfield was only one month older than Bill Medley so not sure why there is such an emphasis on "that older guy". I was able to see them perform in 2001 when they were both 61 (or "fifty-eleven" as they called themselves during the show!), two years before Hatfield passed away.
If you liked this song, please react to Soul and Inspiration. It was written as a follow-up to the success of this song, written by the same writers, features the beautiful harmonies of both Hatfield and Medley (unlike Unchained Melody which is a solo for Hatfield) and peaked at #1 for three straight weeks in 1966.

Bobby and Bill were each in their own vocal group before they met, and those vocal groups sang many of the same songs including a version of Unchained Melody. After they were together, they both wanted to do it as an album cut on the same album, as their solo. Bobby won the coin toss that day, and the rest is history. Phil Specter, their producer, was not a Bobby fan, and believed Bill's voice was a better hook for songs destined to be released as a single, so Bill was highlighted on this and on For Once In My Life. Bill actually produced Unchained Melody, and their later hit Soul and Inspiration.

  • @rickdavis7005
    @rickdavis7005 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bobby's version of "Unchained Melody" wasn'[t the original. The song was composed for the soundtrack of a 1955 prison flick, "Unchained". The song's title was supposed to be just a temporary one, as the songwriters couldn't come up with what they thought would be a good title right away. It was originally sung by a crooner name Al Hibbler, who had a respectable hit with it, and it's been covered many times since, but even the guys who wrote it, Hy Zaret and Alex North, said that Bobby's version was the definitive one.

Your reacting to the greatest duo of all time. Nobody is taking a back seat to bill Medly. Each with there own dynamic sound. They have great harmonies. You don’t need to explain why one has a lower voice and the other higher voice. Unchained Melody was Bobby’s solo. They both decided on that so it’s no surprise. Just one suggestion, stopping it every 15 seconds just destroys the flow of the song. Also the music of today can’t hold a candle to that music. This is 1964

Color TV was expensive, as it became cheaper and people's incomes increased, technology slowly improved that's when the 3 networks we had in the mid 1960's, about 1965, started converting to color TV cameras. TV series were mostly filmed in black and white, there were some exceptions like Bonanza [1959-1973] was always in color [there are some black and white copies out there though.

The song was actually too long for acceptance by a label because it exceeded the 3 minute time limit for radio play - so they simply lied about its length. It’s popularity then rendered the issue moot. (Queen would later have an even greater problem with this issue in the production of Bohemian Rhapsody )
