    Bob and Frederik go to the abandoned cities of Fukushima to see the aftermath of the terrible disaster that happened on march 11, 2011.
    An 9.0 earthquake caused huge tsunami waves which caused a nuclear fallout. Over 200.000 people fled and most of them never came back...
    In this series we explore abandoned supermarkets, stores, pachinko halls, schools, houses, garages with cars, etc. In this episode we explore a school which is a crazy time capsule, it looks exactly how it was abandoned on march 11th 2011.

    Enjoying this series of videos so far. I live here and teach at several elementary schools, so a few notes:
    1. The abundance of musical instruments is standard for a Japanese elementary school, as is the outdoor swimming pool. I was taken aback by the frogs, though.
    2. The triple disaster occurred on March 11, which is about eleven or twelve days before the sixth graders would have graduated from elementary school and started junior high school the following month , as the school year runs from April to March here. So, the garlands hanging in the classroom around the nine-minute mark were probably to celebrate the upcoming graduation, not someone's birthday.
    3. I was here the day of the earthquake, though much further away from the epicenter than this school. With the impact of the earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks, the students would have barely been able to walk let alone carry their belongings.
    Again, just some things to hopefully clarify what you're showing us here. Thank you for this.
    PS- The police here have WAY TOO MUCH free time on their hands, which is why they have nothing better to do than follow you guys around ; )

    Its weird how all the stuff left behind is crazy clean, like it wasn’t covered in thick dust. Looks like all of their belongings were left just hours ago.

    The plushie at 8:30 ripped my heart out. It was clearly treasured by a child and kept safe in their desk. Now it's alone, abandoned. Plushies always get me.

    I dont know how to react... its just that seeing the pictures of the students of the school makes me really sad.. and the stuff they had is still clean and intact.. it made me shiver when i think of when the school is still used.. when there are still students and when they are having a good time playing with friends.. its just sad 😟
    But this is a really nice video tho! Its so cool seeing the houses and the school! ❤

      Thomas H, those kids are NOWHERE near adults yet, they are teens now. This did not happen 15 plus years ago. It happened in March of 2011, which is about 7 years ago. If you look at the pictures of the children in that school, they looked to be under 10, so they would be under 17.

    Its not exactly a revelation, but the whiteboards say such mundane, everyday things on them. Like “textbook page 43” and “kanji page 9”. The date is always written down the right side of the board, and in one of the shorts you can see it clearly: March 11. The day of the disaster. Truly terrifying and mind opening stuff.

    Wondering why no one vandalized this place or other areas these guys filmed? In Japan, people are taught to respect another person's belongings. Some people even leave their bike unlocked because they know no one will steal it. It's a cultural thing in Japan to respect another person.

    You guys are so respectful. I'm sure you take a trophy or two, I would, but for the most part you are respectful and treasure the sites you go to. You don't speak just to be heard like so many. You speak because you have something to say. You make me want to learn your language, if you are an example of where you were raised, I need more of it in my life. I am sick of the vain, and the self-centered. There is no value in the silence between words and the understanding of their weight. Even in moments of lighthearted banter, you share so much of your emotions and take us with you in the journey. You carry yourselves as the voices to the experiences you share, and they are as precious to me as the places you visit. Fantastic work gentlemen. You deserve far more from us than is offered in return, but I hope our thanks find you well in spirit.

      @richard mccann You are looking at this the wrong way. Nobody is looking at this with a desire to shame others. I don't see a dirty house, I see a home that was lived in. That may have had love, and warmth. I see memories long left behind. I see pain and loss, but I see the essence of life and hope that it exists somewhere. I see smiles in photos, and the craftmanship of a fine culture very different from my own, but who feel as I do, laugh as I do, and hope for good things in life, as I do. I see a world I hope is mended. Not a dirty house. Not an empty house. They brought this to me, on that day, they gave us their eyes, and their ears. They took us, halfway across the world. That was their purpose that day.

    • @ExploringtheUnbeatenPath
      @ExploringtheUnbeatenPath  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oneofusall we had a geiger counter and had “protection” in the worst contaminated area’s as you can see in other episodes

    • @oneofusall
      @oneofusall 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exploring the Unbeaten Path no protection and no geiger in this video, touching stuff and breathing in radioactive dust. This is definetly nominee for Darwin award.

      Inside buildings there is almost no radiation and also no radiation particles. You think we didn't do our homework? It's just silly to show the geiger counter the whole time and make it sensational. The focus is at the buildings.

    Wat een bizar beeld, je verwacht dat ieder moment de kinderen terug komen naar de lessen.
    Wat mij trouwens opvalt is hoezeer de school lijkt op een westerse school, als je de Japanse tekens weg denkt had dit zo een school in Nederland of België kunnen zijn.
    Erg indrukwekkend.

    The top floors always get more damaged during an earthquake because the amplitude of the movement is much bigger the higher you get. I was in Tokyo on the 9th floor of a building when the earthquake struck and I can tell you that everything fell on the floor...

    Coat and bag might take no time to get individually, but when it's a group of panicking kids rushing to the same area, congestion happens and it slows the evacuations by several minutes.
