No offense Mover and Gonky, but I do believe Mr. Rick has forgotten more about military aviation than the two of you will ever know. Such an amazing podcast this evening. You all are amazing and inspiring.
I could probably listen to Rick and not realize it’s been several hours. Extremely interesting and enjoyable. Just like his interview a couple years ago.
I worked with him at steam boat. Amazing guy, many of long talks with him. Im an Air Force brat, and oldest brother now retired, was active at the time. So i loved geeking out listening to him. Would have never would have thought meeting such an accomplished person. Selling lift tickets cause he was board lol
Dear hosts, thanks for the show. These mental health minutes are awesome. I don’t know if it’s been done but these mental health minute videos needs to be clipped and make a playlist. Thanks again.
I don’t know if Rick chose to retire or simply to not accept ‘the next job’… but the US DESPERATELY needs people like Rick back in the profession. I will always support the US. It’s my country. But much of the decisions they make nowadays?… That’s a tough ask. Rick For PRESIDENT in 2024! 🫡🇺🇸
Speaking of the JSF Program, I was partial to the look of the Boeing X-32 myself from when I watched the NOVA X-Planes documentary and playing the JSF flight sim game by Eidos in the late 90s. You need to have Rick on more often than every 2 yrs. How about every 6 months. I could listen to his stories forever. He's like a walking Discovery Wings channel (I miss that channel and all those episodes).
Thank you, Mover, for having Rick on tonight's Show (sorry I had to miss it live) anyway I would love to sit and listen to all yours's, Gonky and now Ricks stories all day long, again Thank you Mover....Polly!
Rick is a so great storyteller, I'm sure if you sit with a group in the middle of nowhere everybody would hang on his lips, what an amazing person. I was looking to the short version and went right to this episode, thanks Mover and Gonky.
Love the videos c= someone who means a lot to me wants to be a fighter pilot or at least be a part of that world of military aviation, they're super passionate about it, studying and working hard to get there. You guys helps me at least keep up with what they are or might be dealing with and also helps me have a better sense of that world, thanks for being such wonderful people ♥
Sec Def Gates killed the F-22 program in 2009 partly bcuz of the GWOT, to make money available for a new bomber, lack of a peer adversary at the time, and bcuz development took twice as long as it did for the F-15. Originally they wanted +/- 750, then 381, and it was ultimately cut to 187. Add in the fact of the Great Recession in 08 etc, and the politicians decided after looking at all of the different variables, it was just too costly. Gates also recommended accelerating the F-35 program. ATF actually started around 1981 with first flight in 1990, and the F-22 didn’t achieve IOC until 2005, whereas the F-15 program started around 1965 with first flight in 72 and IOC in 1976. Basically, as we get further into the future, it’s taking longer and longer and more $$ to develop and field these weapons programs, yet the world and threats change at a much faster rate. And the defense industrial base is trying to sell us that technology and a.i. is gonna help design and produce systems a lot faster, easier, and cheaper. Like Mr. Rick said, that’s a bunch of horsesh*t.
Any thoughts on the Wall Street Journal article about the drones in the Ukraine war altering aerial warfare, specifically the reliance on manned aircraft.
I have only one puzzlement. I didn't understand the Mental Health Minute this time 1 Maybe my mind is fried this week and that's highly possible but wheras every week I capture the essence of the message, put it on a three by five card and tape it up ,, and then work to implement that information or correction all week, tonight I was just .. what? Why I don't know. Help?
Hi Kate. “Normalization of deviance” is talking about how we (all) tend to let out standards slip, based on successful deviations from ‘the norm’. Some folks know that they can push boundaries, but most folks just think that they’re that good. It’s like everything from using a hammer or a knife, to whatever you think about life and God or not, you have to prove to yourself that what you believe is true. Norms, in many places and endeavours, are written in blood, and should be at least a steady baseline.
Q? Thinking about "multi-role" I reminded myself of how _Mean Time to Repair_ (MTTR), _Mean Time Between Failure_ (MTBF), and _Criticality_ played in some weird mult-dimensional matrix. *(FMECA!)* How can one figure pro/con in the multi-role thing? /bdt
Rick got out at a good time ... before the woke insanity infected the bureaucracy ... could you imagine somebody explaining their "pro-nouns" to Rick ... X-D
Jimmy Stewart in a P-47 movie! Fk hows nobody told me abot this before! I love BrigGem Jimmy Stewart movies and P-47s! Also Blackhawk Down os still my favorite military flick and the old 1976 Midway movie with charlton Heston is my second fv but also love Band of Brothers series! Pacific series should’ve been a lot better given the intense subject matter but i was bored with it, major let down! Good actors but bad writting and bad production!

Rick has a good memory. There was a test program that converted an F-111 to fly by wire in the 70s.
Yeah it literally used the apollo lunar landing module computers. Absolutely amazing.
Hi Rick. Thanks for joining Mover again. It was great to hear more of your stories behind the scenes of fighter jet construction and management.
Being an engineer myself i know we are pretty boring people but i could listen to Rick ,Gonky, and Mover for hour's. Rick is a next level guy.
Yes Gonky, Memoirs of WWII is an excellent channel with amazing veteran stories.
Great talk, all. Cool chat.
Rick, you are some kind of rock star. I look forward to your next appearance, and in the meantime, peace and power to you.
I too could listen to Rick for hours. Thank you , Sir, for coming to share your expertise , humor, and insight with us.

Best statement ever-- Bean counters should not design airplanes.
Or ships.
Or houses.
Or ...
A crossover with Habitual Line Crosser would be great
Gosh I miss seeing the F-111 Dump and burn at airshows 😢
Goodnuf Gonkey! Definitely a boomer! 🤣🤣🤣 need to have Rick on much more often!!!
Such a great episode.
I know what the F-111 was really created for.
The RAAF.
It was perfect for the long range missions here.

A question, did any other country Air Force come up with this JSF concept and try to save money lol

My iPad tried to target a crop duster when move said "hey siri fox 3"
Ill still love fat amy C even though it will be the first fat amy to be preemptive retired!

If pacific had the same directors and staff as Band of Brothers it would have been a hell of a lot better
