Thanks for mentioning burns. Made me remember I have some I can put in short straw tubes with melted or capped ends, to fit in my FAK pouch. Also other first aid creams, or food items like ketchup. Great videos. TY.
Thank you! I may do something about storing it closer to the fall, after doing more tweaking of my own! I wish I had one of those beautiful gear rooms, but I'd also guess that not having one would be more realistic for most people. I've thought about this topic, too, since it does come up so often!
OMG, a skunk! I'm glad you mentioned other wildlife besides bears. Our recent kayak camping trip was into a black bear area with no place to hang, the few trees grew in V shapes, so we took canisters. It was also into a swamp, so we couldn't walk very far from camp to find a tree anyway. I have a local friend who is an experienced backpacker out in grizzly country, she's told me, no need to use a bear canister or spray on the east coast. My worry was raccoons and possibly a curious bear, but now, skunks!!! LOL. I'm curious about your knife that doesn't collapse, do you know what kind it is? I bought a recommended Swiss army knife, but it seems so tiny!! Thanks for the great content!
It's definitely helpful to know what the animal behaviors are where you're headed, and I know few people use a canister on the AT, for example. I haven't had any bad run-ins with skunks, but I also definitely don't want to attract them (if that's even possible). One of my videos has a "cameo" of a skunk that I didn't even see until a viewer pointed it out! 😂 The knife is a Swiss Army knife. It's safer to have a knife that locks, where you have to move the lock over to collapse it, so that it doesn't collapse on you when you're using it for something. And yes, it's super tiny!
@@WanderingSwitchback I'll have to look for the skunk cameo 😂. Years ago, in the late 1970s, a friend and I would always go up to Skyline Drive in western VA in the fall. The AT runs through there and we'd do little hikes. One time we were getting ready to head home, so it was getting about dusk. We pulled off on a little service road and walked down it to take a pitstop before the drive home. Out of the shadows I see this little black and white creature ambling up the road toward us. And it was a skunk!!! It's very difficult to stop mid-tinkle, but we managed and ran out of there to the car. ROFL. This was back when you rarely saw anyone up there like you do now.
Thanks, Lisa! I use the same little containers I use in my first aid kit, so just a little 3 gram cosmetic container. So far they work great! The next step up if I needed more would be a small reusable salad dressing container (which I need to get more of, since my little travel containers keep cracking). The ones I have are similar to these: amzn.to/42n6pZU
Thanks for the in depth video. I’m learning for backpacking. I have two questions that kind of circle back to using bear cans which is my preference bc I can’t throw anymore. I’m all there for putting everything that smells in it including garbage and body care stuff. Therein lies my questions. I will be peeing at night. Can I keep small hand sanitizer or unscented (to humans) wipes in my hygiene kit in my tent or do I have to wait until breakfast to sanitize my hands. Second do you have to store a wag bag in any particular way to keep it away from animals esp raccoons etc. thx for your great advice.
Great questions! Hand sanitizer ought to be stored with other smellables. I leave my wipes with my poop kit (whether it’s a Wag Bag or not) in the vestibule of my tent (near my feet), and it hasn’t ever been an issue. You may get away with using a wipe for your hands, but I generally wait until the morning. Luckily, with the pStyle and Kula Cloth, it hasn’t been an issue getting anything on my hands at night! I hope that helps!
Great video. Congrats on 2k subscribers🥳
Thank you so much! It's exciting to hit milestones! ❤

I hear that's a great trick! I haven't tried it myself, but I know a lot of people do it. Thank you for watching!!
Great video! Thank you!!
Thank you!
Nice video!!! Good tips in here.
Thank you!
Awesome video as per usual! 😊 Can you post one about how you store your gear? I’m forever tweaking my system and would love to get some more ideas.

Very nice overview for newbies and a great review for those of us who could be more set in our ways. Thank you!
I appreciate that!

Oh no! I've seen them in the wild several times, thankfully no bad run-ins!
Great stuff!
Thanks Matt!
Wow, such a helpful, thorough video! Thank you! I'm curious what kind of small container you use for your hand cream?

Which sun gloves are you using? 🙃 great video!!!!
They’re REI brand ones! I love them!
