Fun fact, in my 7th grade science class we were watching a documentary on the challenger explosion. In the seconds after a recording of a newscaster played saying "Ladies and gentleman, the challenger has exploded." , We heard cheers, woos, and clapping from the field outside of the classroom window. Worst. Timing. Ever.

In case you didn't know, Christa McAuliffe was a history teacher, too, Mr. Terry. She was a civilian astronaut, a trained member of the crew (a payload specialist), but was not part of NASA's astronaut corps, which were full-time NASA employees who would rotate missions and do other agency work on Earth when not flying. McAuliffe was hired as part of the Teachers In Space Program, which intended to have her broadcast lessons from spaces and stuff like that. I remember watching her interviews before the launch. Even here in Canada, her going up was a big deal in schools. The disaster happened on my older brother's birthday, which was crazy. I'll never forget it.

Here's another detail: MacAuliffe's backup for the mission, Barbara Morgan, who of course watched the explosion in person, would then ask to be sent up, to complete McAuliffe's mission. But NASA decided to cancel the teacher in space program, and told her that she'd need to become a full astronaut. So that's what she did. She tirelessly went through NASA's regular process and was selected as part of Astronaut group 17 in 1998. She flew on STS 118 in 2007, did her experiments/demonstrations originally planned for STS-51L, landed, and immediately resigned from NASA.

I actually work in the polymer industry as a chemist and my boss worked on parts of the Challenger. The glass transition temp of the o-rings was well known by the engineers and chemists that worked on them, but the higher ups didn’t want to delay the launch any longer (and assumed the back-up o-rings would help, but they were made of the same material so the transition temp was the same) and proceeded with the launch anyway. Effectively dooming everyone on board.

The thing about the Space Race is that the Soviets and Americans were basically neck and neck, with the US being mere months behind the USSR until the moon landing, where the Soviets never even got close. Alan Shepard went into space less than a month after Yuri Gagarin did. Sputnik went into orbit in October of 1957, and Explorer 1 was sent up in January of 1958. It was a pretty close race until the US landed on the moon.

Korolev died, and they couldn't get their N1 moon rocket to work. There were plans for building up a spacecraft in earth orbit with smaller rockets, and then sending that to the moon, which I believe would've worked. Now, would it have been fast enough to beat Apollo 11? Dunno, kinda doubt it, but they decided to do N1 instead.

The Challenger disaster was a result of bureaucratic ignorance and not listening to the specialists. All they had to do was wait for warmer weather so that the fucking O rings would work properly but they were on a schedule so they got someone higher up the chain to sign off on it. Ridiculous.
