    if you live enough time in Bulgaria you will notice that in the Winter - temperatures may drop to -25C and when this merge with strong wind - you wish you take your words back, because here temperatures may vary 20 degres celsius from day to night (like from 15C to -5C even more) and this is very dangerous for health ... you can get cold sick from dramatic temperature change

    The yes/no head shaking is usually accompanied by a facial expression or saying the word... so it's not that confusing LOL

    • @headbangerdnb
      @headbangerdnb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What are you talking about, George? The reverse headshake is most definitely still a thing. In fact, it's even more confusing now as younger people try to do it the normal way, but end up nodding for both yes and no.

    thank you! I'm engaged to a Bulgarian and we've been together for 3 years and the "always being cold" thing even when it's not cold has always been perplexing to me, but now I see it's a cultural thing (as is "being cold can make you sick") This is amazing to learn (since I've not been able to get to Bulgaria with her yet due to the pandemic.) Thanks again!

    The moral here is: don't trust travel guides, don't trust publication, and moreover, don't trust the word of other people. Come to that, don't even trust ME if I tell you things about countries I know a lot about. I can speak for myself only. Each individual has his/her own experience. As a Ukrainian I can say it is exactly the same for my land - it is PERMANENTLY misrepresented in mainstream commentary and the people are never characterised as we are.

    Just to add - the winter in Sofia is bad. The winter in Plovdiv, for example, one of the hottest cities in bulgaria, doesnt even have snow. Snow falls for like 2 days for the entire winter, you can wear a t-shirt in November and in March, I wore my denim jacket at Christmas. /it's not like it's summer or anything, it's just not cold, it's more like chilly/.

    The inverted nodding and shaking are actually much older than the Ottoman rule, that's just a myth. The gesture was the common way of saying yes and no in the Byzantine empire and it has been the common gesture in most of the Balkans and Asia Minor until recently. I have a Greek friend from one of the islands who's shaking(more like tilting left and right) for 'yes' and nodding(the movement starts kind of upwards, ours downwards instead) his head for 'no' in almost the same way as we do in Bulgaria.

    Bulgaria is oldest country in Europe. Bulgaria is first national state in Europe which adopt Christianity and Bulgarian church became first national independent church in Europe in year 927.
    Bulgarians created Bulgarian Civilization with Bulgarian language, Bulgarian alphabet Cyrillic and Orthodox Christianity.
    Bulgarians spread Christianity and the Bible, translated into Bulgarian language and written in Cyrillic, among the so-called "Slavs" and incorporated most of the "Slavs" into Bulgarian civilization, including the Russians.
    All so-called "Slavic" languages are created on the basis of Bulgarian language. Russian language and so-called "Slavic" languages on the Balkans are dialects of Bulgarian language.
    Today about 300 million people in Eurasia including Russia use Bulgarian writing system Cyrillic as the official alphabet.

      StarS Do you even know how your fake Pagan Catholic " christianity" was spread? By the sword and by forse. If you did your homework and read your history and the Bible you will see Bulgarians dont know jack about God, his real name, the fact there ARE NO POPES IN THE BIBLE AND NO CROSSING YOURSELF OR PRAYING TO DEAD STATUES AND PICTURES! what you have in Bulgaria is nothing but lame pagan catholic religion where everyone is stupid to listen to popes instead of reading the bible on their own!

    • @stars5206
      @stars5206 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Bulgarians are Eastern Orthodox Christians and spread Eastern Orthodox Christianity among so-called Slavs. The Bulgarian Empire is the only Empire that spreads Eastern Orthodox Christianity and through it the Bulgarian language and the Bulgarian alphabet Cyrillic, not through war but through cultural influence.

    It's never below 0 F. In Bulgaria. But most likely the people that you have been told by mean -4 Celsius or maybe made the assumption that 0 is 0 no matter what, and I totally understand it after almost died of hipotermia in the Wisconsin. It's just -5 no biggie what all that fuss on the news, a silly Janks. And then is actually - 35 in units that I know and understand.

    • @milenburushkin5964
      @milenburushkin5964 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are wrong. It does go below 0 F in Bulgaria, but rarely and usually not for long. It was -20° C (-4° F) just a few years ago in the winter in Sofia, though just for two or three days. It was even colder high in the mountains. I think you've got F/C degree conversion wrong, because - 5° F is not - 35° C, but -20.4°C.

    We don't usually do these moves with our heads the way you know it .. That's why the people in Bulgaria might not understand you.. When we say "yes" we move our heads like you know the indian's way..something like that.like trying to do .♾ With our heads... For example when we eat something delicious we do it and say "Mmm.. Nice" (but nowdays it's normal to nod - to move your head FROM UP TO DOWN when we say yes)
    And for "no" it's the opposite moving your head FROM DOWN TO UP SHARPLY and say something like" uh-um no. "idk how to explain it perfectly but there are differences.. Like when we say no and move our heads from down to up we usually use that move when we say" not at all "or something like this

    The thing with cyrilic and english on street signs etc. : we have a lot of tourists and Bulgaria is a part of the EU and we have another script so these are the reasons why we write the street signs etc. in both English and Bulgarian .
    If we did this only in Bulgarian there would be many less people that could read these signs( Macedonians, Serbs, Russians, Ukrainians, ...) but not Westeuropeans, Americans, Asiats or whoever else. It‘s the same in Greece . They have another alphabet that not everybody can read, so they write street signs etc. in English, ( btw. english is not the right word, it‘s latin, because the script is not english but latin, just like the script is not bulgarian but cyrillic)

    The YES/NO swap is actually recent and somewhat artificial(social engineering at work). Some journalist commented something like that in the late 80s and it became an oddity and then it got momentum and then people swapped. I can assure you it was the opposite before that and many people are still normal.

      Before it was the same as the rest of the world.
      Както казах на достатъчна възраст съм за да съм бил свидетел. Съответно моят тате не е сред живите, но именно той ме е учил и това беше нормата сред гражданите по онова време. Това, че теб са те отгледали с тази групова идентичност у ваше село си е твой проблем.

      nikoladd Има една камара стари филми от нашето време.....гледай внимателно и ще се увериш в думите ми. Например "На всеки километър "....
      Този филм не режисиран от мои роднини, нито актьорите са мои съселяни.
      В края на '80 бяхме заети с далеч по-важни и други неща, нали си спомняш за тях?Казваш, бил си вече голям. Съжалявам за баща ти, но първият ти коментар прозвуча доста не възрастно. Бъди жив и здрав!Желая ти лек ден!

    If you don't know Bulgarian, it is bad. Говориш ли Английски език? Не.

    Well Bulgaria can be a good tourist destination but the country (mainly because of corrupted politicians) is not gonna live for a lot longer.

    The head movements for Yes and No are not the same as shaking left and right and nodding up and down, they're brief and different head gestures that require a tilt and a lift.
