I went to the US about 16 yrs ago and was suppriesd to see a truck load of monaros going down the highway. I checked it out and the pontiac gto was a rebadged holden. They were built here in australia. Pitty the couldnt sell more of them, it might have kept our automotive industry alive.

Also, Holden in Australia didn't need bailing out. They remained profitable, although the size of that profit margin was only a few million dollars a year. Similar story with ford. Realistically it would have made sence to just make it a stand alone company since it could self fund, but they didn't want to surrender the Holden brand. Not sure the story on the ford side, but likely the same - Apparently the USA GM and Ford, who had been cutting corners for years had been paying their CEO's multi million dollar salaries and bonuses for decades which put them in the red as their ceos refused to reduce their annual payouts to save the company.
This is why they needed bailing out, and because they still had profitable operations in Australia, the US government would not pay a bail out unless either company had no profitable operations anywhere. Thus they shut down ford and holden Australia, and only retained their racing teams, which now no longer race Australian cars - and which means now nobody can really be bothered to watch the races any more.

The centre lines on Aussie roads used to be yellow but they were changed to white because the yellow lines were harder to see at night in the wet.

It wasn’t Holden that needed bailing out. General Motors went broke during the so called GFC and required bailing out. It was no longer part of GMs global plan to have right hand vehicles manufactured in Australia so they destroyed the integrity and strength of the Australian motor vehicle manufacturing industry as part of their global restructuring effort.

Well done you said it the ford range is so much more beautiful the it American countaparts.it should have been supported and integrated more with the us.it was same for Holden and Chrysler.all three have better looking cars in Australia then the us.although on occasion a US designer is transferred the results are often stunning .it’s like leaving the US somehow releases the shackles.like the Aussie charger compared to the US.On Sundowner this and good luck with the hunt you also have to find it’s valiant rival the Drifter.available in both charger Ute and van.they are stunning.cheers
