Dr. Sayed Mujahid Husain, Pediatrician with Apollo Medical Center, Bangalore, India, speaks on the importance of vaccination and the schedule that is recommended by the Indian paediatrician.
The Indian government has national immunisation program, as part of its health policies which has made certain vaccines mandatory for every new born.
Children are vulnerable to a number of infections as they are exposed to different types of viruses and bacteria on a daily basis. This is also because their immunity is still developing.
Modern medicine has always vouched for preventive strategies against diseases. It is quite amazing to know that some of the deadly diseases that have taken many lives and crippled many have been eradicated. This change has been possible only by the administration of a relevant set of vaccines.
You might be surprised to know that vaccines are mild strains of the disease-causing viruses or bacteria. They are administered to help the body to identify them and build the defence against them. Vaccines are based on the natural defence mechanisms or the immunity that we all know.
The long list of the vaccinations advised by the hospitals confuses most of the parents. They have a series of FAQ’s with their paediatrician, in an attempt to understand the vaccination schedule charts.
With ongoing research and advancement, there is a constant update of the vaccination schedule. Believe us these vaccinations are for our good.

Following is the list of mandatory vaccines as recommended by the national immunisation program:
At birth: BCG, Oral Polio Vaccination 0, Hep-B1
6 weeks: DPT, Hib 1
10 weeks: DPT, Hib 1
14 weeks: DPT, Hib 1
9 months: Measles
15 months: MMR (measles, mumps and rubella)
18 months: DPT booster
5 years: DPT booster
10 years: Tetanus and Diphtheria (booster dose)
