This one goes for people asking for tips if you film yourself because you don't have anyone else to help you with the filming. (a lil long but worth reading i promise lol) 1. Use a tripod. Yeah, you can use notebooks or a chair, but tripods allow you better to fix the angle, the height, etc. Not neccessarily a big one, you can use one of those that you can easily carry around, but make sure wherever you put it, it's a flat surface. 2. be really, REALLY careful with the angle and the kind of shot you're using to film yourself. Since you're all by yourself, you don't have anyone helping you adjust the tripod or wherever you put your device to film in, so if you're not careful to make some tests before actually filming, you might waste energy dancing with the best you have and finding out the angle was off or the shot doesn't show your head or feet. 3. You can simulate camera moves with a video editor. A panning to the left or to the right, zoom in or zoom out (these are really common though), but do not overuse them, since it can make the video too shaky and lose charm. When zooming, be careful with the quality, since zooming can reduce quality (the more you zoom in), know the limit and don't go beyond it. Play around with these camera movements to a point where it almost seems natural and fluid and not too obvious you edited it. 4. Glitches and cloning yourself are a huge YAS but if you overuse them they can easily turn into a huge NOPE. Glitches can be good for crucial moments in the dance, DO NOT ADD GLITCH TO THE WHOLE VIDEO SINCE IT CAN BE TOO DISTRACTING. Cloning yourself is also a huuuuuuuGE YAS because it gives it a not so expected surprise, but with this effect you need to be shooting on a wide angle and mostly on a plain bg for the effect to blend perfectly. And last but not absolutely not least... 5. Color correction, lightning, contrast, etc.
This was really worth the read! Do you have any recommendations where to start learning color correction, lightning, contrast, etc? Any direct links or channels?
That's great. But most of the times I shoot my dance videos myself using a tripod and a smartphone which remains standing at one point. Do you have any tips? Can shooting 2-3 times from different angles help me?
You can crop and zoom in/out and pan left to right or up and down in post as you edit your vid. This depends on the quality of the original video though as to much cropping will degrade the quality of you image. Here you can see how I used the technique as I zoom onto the ring (@ about 28 secs). That isn't the camera zooming, that's me cropping and zooming onto the ring as I edit the vid. This is a slow zoom but you can get all sorts of effects this way (panning, camera shakes, zooming, cropping...) And yeah shooting 2-3 times from different angles (if you only have one camera). Synch the different clips up in your editing program then cut between the different camera angles. Just make sure you start off at the same spot each time you shoot your dance. You'll also see me do this in my fight videos as that's exactly what I do. I have 3 cams all at different angles/positions. I cut between them to show best fight angle. th-cam.com/video/6PE0yJ0MbGA/w-d-xo.html
I shoot contemporary and modern dance, and this video is still the most helpful and applicable one I've seen on shooting dance. Even if you are shooting a more off-beat or creative dance film, almost all of these tips still apply! Thank you!
Thank you Steezy! You are professional and personal the same time. You are the only dance channel I miss NOT A SINGLE video from ))) Now I will try some visual effects from this video.
I entered a small dance competition online as my first time really dancing and I just had myself, a camera on a tripod, and my hallway. I have a chronic illness that makes it hard to dance or stay upright for too long so I incorporated levels, closeness to the camera, and also using the walls in the hall to help emphasize motions and keep myself upright. I plan to use it again when I film myself. With contests, I'm not sure if they allow editing videos together, but I know I want to play with lighting in some way. It's just a navy blue hallway with some off-white detail which is kind of boring and a little old looking. But not big enough to do much with.
This was soooooo good and so thorough! LOVEEEED IT. I’m actually going to shoot a couple of dance videos this week and sent this to the person who’s going to help meee film it :) THANKS FOR DOING THIS!
Hey STEEZY!! Thanks so much for these tips. I’ve noticed some dancers can edit their videos and make their popping and locking, and their kicks and hands toward the camera look way more enhanced. Anyone have any good tips on which editing tool to use and how to do this?
If you film yourself at home, get a green screen and tripods to hold it (around 150$) and use OBS to plant a decent studio / location background behind you.
Hey Steezy, you guys have said in the past "Don't just watch videos to be wowed, but watch them to learn from and feel what the artist is trying to express" can you explain?
This is late but I think they mean pay attention to the way the dancers tries to communicate through certain moves. So actually study the movements, don't just watch for entertainment purposes.
Anyone have any recommendations for what kind of lighting to buy? I see alot of dance studios using LED bar lights but not sure what brand/style is good to start with
This video was so incredibly helpful (and hilarious) - thank you so much for sharing! Would you perhaps be able to share equipment ideas/suggestions for folks looking to use dedicated cameras/stabilizers/etc. beyond their phone cameras? Thanks again for all you do!!
Guys is there a way I can film myself by putting my camera on a tripod and use panning techniques in post production to get a similar effect to camera movement Because I'm doing this alone
I want do dance covers but i dont have good mobile / lighting / somany dressess yeah i agree i love black thats enough... Can you suggests me a budget friendly mobile / camera... I would like to know learn more about lighting and editing... Keep posting✌️

Any tips for filming yourself?
I don't have anyone to help me film a choreography or freestyle but I still want to post good videos.
Same here.
Second this

it's work but record yourself multiples at different angles and heights. Perhaps even play around with zooming in and out post-production.

Hey, do you have advice for a good editing software for dance videos. Love the tips by the way
@@wendy-wej Sony Vegas pro or Adobe premiere are fine. They both are professional video editing softwares and run on both, windows or apple :)
This was really worth the read! Do you have any recommendations where to start learning color correction, lightning, contrast, etc? Any direct links or channels?

These are great filming tips! Are you making dance covers as well? If yes, I'd like to see them, but I didn't find any videos on your channel. :o
Man, this channel is really underrated. They deserve more subscribers and views.

@@FightCollective dude I just learned you could do this last night. (I use lumafusion app) Thank you so much for adding an example!!!
Seaech for key frams in premiere pro if you are using Adobe.

The throw up during the bad edits loooooool yesss
Perfect example that goes with this is Dababy - BOP music video. Tell a story and know the choreo ahead of time so you can flow with it.

Do you ever perform the dance to slowed down the audio, and then put it back to the original speed to make the movements pop more?
