The first episode of the world famous "Just The Tip" by X-Plane Junkies discusses turning only using the whiskey compass... I like whiskey, do you? Anyways, that little compass has a mind of its own sometimes. Join me as I show you a couple tips when turning only referencing the compass.

Literally been trying to understand this magnetic dip error thingy for pass 24hrs and a lot of the other videos I watch can easily confuse new learner but your illustration hit the nail on the head. Thanks.

This helped a lot. I was very confused with the Acronym UNOS for a very long time so I kinda pieced together 2 acronyms with NOSE.
For the initial part of the turn, you want to use NOSE (North Opposite; South Exaggerated). Not needed beginning on West/East Heading.
For the end stage of the turn, you want to use UNOS (Undershoot North, Overshoot South). Not needed ending turn on West/East Heading.
To see how much you would turn: (30 degree latitude / 2) + 15 = 30 degree, so aim for 150 if aiming for 180 (South) and 330 (North) As shown in the video if turning from the West.
Found this worked best for my IFR training, especially when trying to describe VD MONA.

This was super quick, simple, and helpful. Also really great quality and the explanations were so clear. Thanks!

    Total nerd here!
    DVMONA!
Deviation errors - the errors associated with electromagnetic interference from electrical components in the aircraft
Variation error - the difference between true north and magnetic north which is what the compass points to
Oscillation errors - the errors associated with the magnetic floating and bouncing around in the kerosene-like fluid
Magnetic Dip Errors - errors associated with the fact that the magnet has a weight on its southern end (when facing north) that counteracts the force of the magnet trying to dip down following Earth's lines of magnetic flux to magnetic north which then causes the Northerly Turning errors and the Acceleration/Deceleration errors. As the aircraft is accelerated or decelerated the weight on the magnet causes it to swing around backward/forward respectively, which is why the acronym ANDS came about. The magnet shows a northern direction when accelerating and a southern direction when decelerating. The magnet shows a northerly heading when turning away from it momentarily which is why at 1:50 we see the compass remain on about a 010 degree heading. When trying to roll-out on a heading can be tricky because of these errors. For example for a 360 compass heading, you would have to undershoot by 30 degrees and if rolling out on a 180 heading , you would have to overshoot by 30. The acronym UNOS came about from this to help us remember to undershoot north and overshoot south.

Thanks for the inflight demonstration of this. I found it very hard to do well in the cockpit even after reading books and watching illustrated videos. Seeing it in action helps a lot!

great video...i asked my cfi about ANDS & unos, he had the same answer I did...only the definition?.......you nailed it! thank you.
