What a great video of this Vintage washing machine... Love the agitation.... This was a very unique agitation system.... Wish manufactures still made washing machines like this and other agitator washers from the early 1960s... When I was a kid I was always opening the lid on my mother's center post agitator washer and loved watching it go back and forth...
My dad was in the coin laundry industry for years. Frigidaire tried to sell their machines to the commercial market. My dad purchased two for a test. My mom was the first to test and complained of so much tangling. cleaned well, though. Customers just would not use them. He stuck with Speed Queen, Small items would float over the tub during the overflow rinse mainly because customers overloaded them. The service man pulled hundreds of socks out of those pumps. My dad tried every brand over 30 years in the business.
It's actually very gentle on the clothes. The agitator is made out of a plastic (not sure of the exact type). It does not have any rough or sharp edges. Truthfully, it is probably one of my favorite machines.
This is just a fascinating machine, one of a kind. It does amaze me how rapidly it empties the tub I would dare say just as fast or faster than the Frigidaire, of course the spin speed doesn’t match, nothing comes close to the Frigidaire.
Gsohoover I meant compared to some of the others Speed Queen solid tub, Norge solid tub, GE and Hotpoint solid tub this spins up a bit faster unless it has a more shallow tub than the others of this vintage?
@@petermaz701 The tub isn't smaller than other solid tubs. My theory is the machine ramps up to speed quickly because of the design. It uses pulleys to agitate and spin.
Gsohoover i’m sure you’re right such an interesting machine. you’re lucky to have it. too bad you couldn’t find a Philco I would love to see that in action but I don’t think it compares, from the videos I’ve seen I don’t think it has the power because it relies strictly on that rubber piece on the bottom.
I've watched these since I was a child in the 1950's. Almost all of the detergents back then, were high sudsing. The soaps certainly were. I never saw one of these sudz-lock. Ever.
Is that Ariel detergent? These are so good at producing suds. Are they prone to Suds lock? It FLOORS me how fast it clears the water from the tub. 4 seconds, tops. Very clever splash guard, BTW
@@Gsohoover It’s harder on machine it will wear it out stuff don’t get agitated good enough my washer 2000 sears kenmore and a wringer that never happened no even in my Wringer and if you separate laundry right no of those things will happen. You doin something wrong.Never happen to me

Great story, thanks for sharing!
Which machines did he finally settle on for the long haul part of the business?
@@pawfan Over the many years he had SQ, Hotpoint, Easy, Kenmore, Frigidaire, GE. The last new installation was 20 GE in 1974.
I had no idea these particular machines were famous for tangling but after watching it's agitation action, I can understand it. Most interesting.
At least it uses water and it wash

This looks like someone drowning aggressively at 21:16, for a washing machine that looks pretty violent
It is more gentle than one would expect, quite honestly. The agitator moves alot of water because of the fins and holes in it.
Ok Got you.
I'd like to see the inner workings of this washer. I've been interested in appliances for as long as I can remember. I'm glad I'm not alone.
Not much to look at underneath, but sure. I can do that.

Solid tub with a spin drain, goes up to spin quickly.

Boy how I wish I had seen a GM Frigidaire up close and personal!
I glad I don't have to mop the floor after that machine is done lol.
SPLASH-O-MATIC :)
I like my machine nice and wet ;)
What was the transmission maintenance like?
There is no transmission just pulleys. It has two grease fittings for greasing the bearings.
@@Gsohoover That's simple enough to work on...Thanks!

I don't think it would be possible to sudz like one of these. After all, its not like that Westinghouse at Roberts 😂
The viewing device is very effective!
This washer kinda reminds me of the whirlpool colipso washer
Even in the rinse cycle there is still soap suds.
It generates quite a bit of suds. Still rinsed out well.
Try using fabric softener to knock down the laundry detergent suds.
This machine has no lint filtering system?
There is a pan that goes on the top of the agitator to filter lint. I doubt it was very effective.
I wish it did.

Solid tub with a spin drain. Yes, it's Ariel detergent. Very sudsy! Thank you, the splash guard was much needed on this machine.
grand carriage 1: I think there would be a whole lot more suds if Ariel detergent was used or if Foca was used.
grandcarriage: If Ariel were used I think we would have had many more suds than what we saw here.
To many pair of pants that’ to hard on machind
It's better to pack this machine full. Otherwise, it will have issues with tangling and will go out of balance in spin
