Houseki No Kuni is a Diamond in the Rough (or, why it's so fun to watch)

  • 3D animes are not well regarded in the anime community, and a lot of them tend to be poorly made. But Houseki No Kuni, or, Land of the Lustrous in English, is a show (based on the manga of the same name) that's looking to flip that reputation. It's a 3D anime with fluid animation, breath taking imagery and, overall, is a good 3D anime! And today, I want to talk about that.

    I guess a very easy way to describe it would be, Steven Universe meets RWBY :P
    BTW: Yes, I know, it's based on a manga series of the same name by Haruko Ichikawa, I just forgot to mention it . . . I dun goofed :P

    • @MrGenxun
      @MrGenxun 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's probably worth mentioning that the HnK manga pre-dates Steven Universe by about a year.

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, but this just a very quick and basic way to describe the show to those who may not be familiar with it.

      *Good news: Houseki no Kuni* season 1 didn’t end up like *Kado.*
      *Bad news:* It ends at a massive cliffhanger.
      *Silver lining:* It’s an adaptation of a manga, so I can go read that.
      *Nitpick:* You butchered the pronunciation (it’s pronounced like Hou-se-ki no Ku-ni, not Hou-sekai no Ku-nai).

    I'm starting to think the anti-CGI sentiment in the anime community is a circlejerk. Picky eaters who won't give something a chance just because it's different.

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, that's definitely how it can feel sometimes, but I think it's the most well known examples of CGI in anime are also the ones that are really poorly done, and great stuff like this just ends up being buried because of said well known examples, like Berserk 2016. It's annoying :c

    The background feeling barren and lifeless is mostly due to the fact Houseki no Kuni is set in the far future after a "Massive Extinction event" , so the only other creatures left and seen are all just Invertebrates such as snails , slugs , and insects..which are the species that are there since god knows how long and survived more than a few massive extinction events even before the dinosaurs.

  • @nowdied
    @nowdied 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    To be fair to the Backgrounds... I think they are meant to be lifeless looking at times.
    Not much life would be left when your planet gets rammed by 6 freaking meteors/stars lol (Episode 2).

    3:57 That's basically the point - It wasn't directly said in anime, but theirs body are carved by sensei to, exept hair, look the same.
    Btw, manga is really original and character driven psychological drama. But It probably wont reach best parts in just 12 epizodes, so I really hope for second seasson.

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, I had a feeling that's what was going on.
      Yeah, I will admit it is a personal nitpick, but still. That said, the way they're able to make each characters' movements and expressions feel unique to each character, to the point you could describe each characters' personality based on their physical ticks and quirks alone, was amazing. I just loved that attention to detail.
      Oh, dear god. Is this gonna be another Made In Abyss? Where it draws me in with the beautiful artwork and lovable characters and than dive head first into all sorts of twisted existential nightmares? Aaaah xD

    In an interview, the director said the author told him all the gems share the same body type, which happens to make it easier when modeling the characters in CGI.

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, I didn't consider that. I gotta admit that's a clever way to save on time, especially considering all the other info I've gotten in regards to what happens later on in the manga, but still.

    • @android19willpwn
      @android19willpwn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yeah, less a case of them having the same model because the show is 3D, and more a case of the show being 3D because of them having the same model. Probably other reasons too, but I'm sure that was a factor.

    I’m happy there are more people reviewing this show. It’s a shame it’s so unpopular.
    And the amount of hate Phos gets for simply being what amounts to a child character. It’s not his fault he’s super weak.

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I know, it really is, but who knows, maybe it'll get more popular later through word of mouth.
      Do they really? That seems a bit much, I mean, Phos is literally a child compared to everyone else! And they're developing as the show goes on, like, come on! Aah, I'm not bothered to rant here xD

      Seraraine I felt bad for phos because they shouldn't of been bullied for being weak physically. Phos is strong emotionally, and is really intelligent compared to the other gems.
      Also, judging by Phos's personality, it's like they had a form of attention deficit disorder. It seemed like the anime showed much psychology with the gems. I absolutely love that.

  • @ipopa1995
    @ipopa1995 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Well the models are repetative, not because of the cg but the source the anime is adapting. The character are the same as the manga, so the character design are the same as in the Anime. So it is not the Anime that has those repetative model. But it has a explanation in the manga, but will end in spoilers.

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, altho the anime could have changed the designs a bit, not much, but some slight differences in build, height and etc to make the show feel less like it's just swapping out hairstyles, you know? And I have a theory as to why they look repetitive, based on what they've hinted at in the show already, but still . . .
      But, to quench my curiosity without spoiling it for anyone in the comments, has the reason they all look so alike been hinted at in the episodes made so far? Or is what they hinted at a red herring?
      EDIT: Also, I just realized I never mentioned in the video that this is based on a manga . . . messed that up, lol.

    • @ipopa1995
      @ipopa1995 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      TravenTalks Not jet clearly in the Anime.(but that may not come in this season) But Sensei plays a really important role especially he is the first that came on land. So he could have some influence on the gems and their look and overall knowledge.

    • @ipopa1995
      @ipopa1995 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TravenTalks Well if you look more in detail. The gems have diffrent eyes and some have diffrent faceexpressions.

    • @Machiroable
      @Machiroable 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Manga Spoiler: If they changed the design of the characters it would contradict the history of the manga, the gems are given "birth" with their bodies distorted, something like the last page of the enigma of amigara fault, the one that gives/carves with the body is of that shape is master Kongo(Adamant).

    • @algro9567
      @algro9567 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The reason the models are repetitive in the anime is simply because all the gems (Except for Sensei) use the same body model. I remember a talk with the director said something about it giving them the ability to work on body motion more, and that every motion can be used across every character with only some changes between and that saved them time in production.

    I liked Knights of Sidonia and BLAME. Especially BLAME. After watching BLAME I realized that all cgi anime needed to be good was care into its creations, as opposed to using it as a crutch or cheap replacement.
    On the topic of obvious cgi in more traditionally looking anime, Kizumonogatari had an interesting tale on it. The cgi is jarring, but it's suppose to be jarring to put the viewer into a sense on unease or discomfort.

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wasn't exactly a big fan of either of those, altho I will admit, the space battles in Knights of Sidonia were friggin' epic, and I loved the designs of everything in BLAME, made me want to check out the original manga. I actually quite enjoyed Ajin tho, thought it was a really good show, even if it did have that low frame rate problem that just drives me nuts >.<
      And I agree. I did a whole video talking about it before, but to put it simply, I think it's just a lot of the time the people doing the 3D either don't know how to do it properly or are just rushing.
      Oh, that sounds cool. I've not watched that, but have heard a lot of good things about it and the series. And with the ridiculous clips I've seen from it, I really need to! But like I said, sounds like a clever use of the 3D, instead of trying to make it blend perfectly, just use it to draw people into the uncanny valley :D

  • @KnifeChampion
    @KnifeChampion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Damn, the genden neutral pronouns are so annoying and unnecessary, how many takes did you need to get it right?
    the manga had 'them' use male pronouns and it worked out great, why did 'they' decide to go with this postmodern bs when making the anime
    Get it? 'them' refers to the manga translators and 'they' refers to the anime translators, this is why this shit is confusing, english grammar isn't designed for this

    • @KnifeChampion
      @KnifeChampion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Also, using 'he' just as an artistic choice is better as it better conveys the genderless nature of the gems as it breaks the likely assumption a viewer might have without being in your face about it and the unnecessary confusion that comes with 'they'
      when reading the manga I just stoped even noticing it after a while, while in the anime in some cases it's just SO confusing (ep7 in particular) that the first time it came up it put me out of it so much I had to pause and read it couple of times unsure whether it might be an error made by the subber

    • @TravenTalks
      @TravenTalks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First, clever pun :P
      Second, it wasn't that hard for me to go by 'they' for this show. I can see how confusing it can get, especially when they're in a group and you don't know whether they're referring to one Gem in particular or just to everyone in the group or talking about the Gems in general, but for me after the first time I noticed it, it just kinda clicked in my head. Sure, I definitely see the more feminine/masculine traits in each of the Gems, but that gets overwritten by the fact that, they're rocks. It just doesn't make sense in my head to go by usual pronouns for that. But that's just me. *shrugs*

    • @knockoutroundabout
      @knockoutroundabout 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're coming off a lot more aggressive about this than you need to, dude.
      I agree with the he pronouns but calling they pronouns "post modern bs" just comes off as rude rather than an actual criticism. Plenty of people use they/them pronouns, and have done so for centuries, english is absolutely designed for this.
      If someone can take the time to recognize slang they can take the time to understand another person's gender.

    • @literallyasuka2996
      @literallyasuka2996 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Knife Ivan I just use 'he' for the masculine looking gems, and 'she' for the feminine looking gems, and 'they' for the androgynous gems. I know the anime and manga has their own decision for pronouns, but fans can call them whatever they want. There's nothing to debate about.
