I saw this man live some years ago at the jazz cafe. The very next day I was walking through Camden market only to find him walking towards me ! A warm smile and that great white beard...no silly posing selfie required...a handshake...I complimented him on the previous nights performance which he graciously received. A memory I will treasure to my last day. He carried on his way anonymously but at the same time surrounded by a mystic aura amidst the crowds of tourists consumed by tat...if only they knew.
A couple years ago as I was getting on a flight out of LAX an old man was getting on the plane early because he needed a little extra time. He was carrying a glittery sax case that looked like it was from the 50's. The attendant specifically said, "Welcome aboard, Mr. Sanders." I didn't know him by sight, but it all clicked when I heard that. Once on the plane a lot of people were making a little fuss over a pro football player. The young man next to me asked me who he was. I said, "I don't know, but it really doesn't matter. THAT guy isn't the celebrity on this plane. There's an old man in back named Pharoah Sanders who is the REAL celebrity." It's kinda funny that a middle-age white guy had to introduce a young black man to a jazz legend, but he downloaded some music before we took off & was a fan before we landed. How could you not be?
great story!! we love you maestro pharaoh!! I wanted him to be the first music I heard this year, so... here I am. happy 2023, everybody!! this'll surely be a grand one. enjoy.....
Life's short, too short to be hating over what we see on the surface. Not that we should ignore what makes us unique, but it's easy to miss a lot of the good things, if we don't take the time to share what we love. American Jazz is unique but not everyone knows "Porgy and Bess", LEADBELLY, and so many others. And there are many great voices to discover.
RIP Oh Great Pharaoh Sanders. Though I never saw you performing live, know that your music changed my life for the better and I can't thank you enough. Till we meet again on the other side ❤️🙏🏾
+Harriet Johnson I agree Harriet. I've found myself listening to Pharoah's take a lot more as it more spiritual in tone. Love them both however. Be well.
I have loved him since the seventies when we had jazz at night on the radio while I was driving the streets of Chicago. Midnight shows East of Midnight they called the show, East of Midnight.....
There are VERY FEW musicians on this planet that can approach a song with the same intensity and feeling of John Coltrane. Pharoah Sanders is one rare spirit. I actually think that he puts MORE feeling into this tune than Trane did. He is obviously influenced, but he's also obviously HIM and not mimicking Coltrane. Highlight of my day to day was listening to this master on his instrument.
Pharoah Sanders (tenor sax) William Henderson (piano) Donald Smith (electric piano) Tarik Shah (bass) Greg Bandy (drums) Leon Thomas (vocals -1,4,6) NYC, July 13, 1987
RIP Pharoah ❤ Your music, along with Tranes, is etched into the very fiber of my being forever. I don’t know if any force has influenced my life more or ever will. The world has lost a powerful spiritual force.
What power! This is what makes Jazz so special. Pharoah Sanders is daring, emotional, and focuses those around him as only a precious few (like Coltrane and Dizzy and Miles and Shorter) can command. Thank you for posting this gem!
No musician has ever touched me quite like Pharoah Sanders did and continues to do. I am constantly finding new music of his and each song is as beautiful as the last. Truly a musical wizard, Rest In Piece.
Happy Birthday Pharoah Sanders born October 13, 1940 A Grammy Award-winning jazz saxophonist May God grant him everlasting happiness, knowledge, love and understanding for many many more years to come!!🎂🎁🎈🎊🍷🍷🎉🎂
Luckily you dont have to understand jazz ...or any art form ...to enjoy it....you may hear it ...and enjoy it ,but dont know why, and that's ok...or you may hate it..and that's ok ....you will find what moves you ...and what doesn't......its your own individual path....enjoy!!!!!
you still can! I was born in 93 and had the pleasure of seeing Pharoah last year! I was wonderful and I would recommend it even if you have to go out of your way to get to a show.
Beautiful! Pharoah with Sonny Sharrock on Ask the Ages might be the best Fusion album ever made. Saw Pharoah 10/31/86 and can still remember the uplifting refrain of the last tune. Stayed with me all these years......
wow, im always in envy of anyone who has heard a jazz legend live. i unfortunately was born in 1990, by that time most of the greats either passed away or were too old to perform. its still my dream to watch a great tenor like Pharoah Sanders or Yusef Lateef live.
If you are a fan of Coltrane, you must go see Pharoah Sanders, born Farrell Sanders, while you are still able. They were/are as close as 2 musicians can be style wise. Playing together in 1965 with Sanders on Coltranes 'Ascension' album left Coltrane influenced by Sanders it is said.
I am always amazed/amused at the amount of video/audio material of varied black artists "curated" by these companies. The music goes put of circulation to the public and magically appears years later when some person in control decides to release it. Hail capitalism! Why am I so black and blue?
Yeah, I felt the same way, it's really insane, which rhyms with (John and Alice) Coltrane. 😉 All the best and peace from Brazil my fellow jazz enthusiast. ✌
never seen trane either but saw sanders every chance i got in my former life.......now i just listen to his music.Favorite tune of mine..........my favorite things .............and hum ,,,,upper and lower............and the creator........and..........
You are absolutely right! Just love and appreciate them both. -- I do. I remember screaming with pleasure while Pharoah Sanders performed when I was a student at Howard U. We ALL screamed with ecstasy and in unison!!!
yusef lateef -- that's the man. i so want to see him live, too! (sanders as well, of course). i'd also recommend chico hamilton -- still among the three best concerts i have been to ... and that was back in 1997!
Only just picked up on this track. Absolutely amazing. Surprised I have not listened previously as I have listened regularly to John and Alice Coltrane.
astronomical coltrane was getting his mind around the GREAT YEAR of 26000 yr cycle...his African ancestors (architects of the gt pyramid, the first alphabet, math, etc) counted 10 of them...coltrane, sanders, and alike where light years ahead . EQUINOX

There is nothing like Black Classical music..All praises to the Gods.
YES!!
i think Bach is in the same level
For me, Pharoah's version is evangelical; Coltrane's is meditative. I love and give thanks for both.
+Harriet Johnson interesting.
+Harriet Johnson I agree Harriet. I've found myself listening to Pharoah's take a lot more as it more spiritual in tone. Love them both however. Be well.
+Harriet Johnson Yes!
both have a way of crying to God that is unbelievebale ...
Mr. jackson this comment makes so much sense
Straight to the heart... No bla bla, no empty phrases, no hiding behind excellent technique, just expression of love.

This is my first time hearing this version and I must say it is beyond fabulous it's a Masterpiece. The pianist must be a student of McCoy Tiner.
Curtis Miles ......who is in the rhythm section on this master piece.???
❤❤❤Ase'!!!

This was the very first Saunders tune I heard. I was about 15 when I started getting into Jazz and this tune has a special place in my heart.
Wish I met his music earlier like you. But hey no worries - Light comes to us all in different phases of life :)
No musician has ever touched me quite like Pharoah Sanders did and continues to do. I am constantly finding new music of his and each song is as beautiful as the last. Truly a musical wizard, Rest In Piece.
Happy Birthday Pharoah Sanders

THIS IS SO GOOD WHAT
uh huh :D
it takes a while to understand some jazz. i used to try and force myself to, but once you actually get it, you really feel it
It’s probably how older ppl try to make sense of womps and wobbles in today’s music
Why does anyone have to understand it? Just listen and feel whatever it is that you're feeling
He just bared his pure soul. Beautiful.
you still can! I was born in 93 and had the pleasure of seeing Pharoah last year! I was wonderful and I would recommend it even if you have to go out of your way to get to a show.
Never have I heard a saxophone solo that evokes so much spirituality. A master indeed.
I have seen him play. a holy man, such purity of heart..
This is so HARD...omg. 🔥💎🔥💎
Beautiful! Pharoah with Sonny Sharrock on Ask the Ages might be the best Fusion album ever made. Saw Pharoah 10/31/86 and can still remember the uplifting refrain of the last tune. Stayed with me all these years......
A blessing ! A blessing from Lord ! Hallelujah ! Praise let there be love ! Power of Love overpowers Love of Power ! (J.Hendrix)

He is blowing blessings to all.
this is the best version of all, second to none. what a climatic song -- pharoah sanders reigns supreme.
Thank you, sir, it's an honour and a privilege to know you through music. Johnny Icognida -John Ryan Scrivener

Pharoah understood 'Train better than anyone!
R D JAZZBOY trane
A living legend. I was blessed to see him at Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood a few years ago. Magnifico!
There's only a few sax players that should be playing this song and can do it proper justice, Pharoah' s one of them.
Pharoah nonostante i tuoi 70 anni sei sempre il più grande
Non ha settantanni ma forse ottanta,po questo è un commento tardivo
never seen trane either but saw sanders every chance i got in my former life.......now i just listen to his music.Favorite tune of mine..........my favorite things .............and hum ,,,,upper and lower............and the creator........and..........
Pure. That's all I have to say! Thanks so much for posting, and blessings to you.
Quel talent ce Dieudo.
All this Trane versus Pharaoh bullshit... This is awesome... Trane is awesome too... dig the groove and just feel the love.
You are absolutely right! Just love and appreciate them both. -- I do. I remember screaming with pleasure while Pharoah Sanders performed when I was a student at Howard U. We ALL screamed with ecstasy and in unison!!!
Every time i think about that show @ Crampton Auditorium, it sends me to "Cloud 9"
I've seen him live in Hamburg at FABRIK in the 90's of the last century.
Amazing concert...
Maico Friedrich thanks for specifying which century
I saw him at the old "Smiling Dog Saloon in Cleveland, OH, right after I got out of the service in 1972 or 1973.
Morning meditiation. Where Pharoah takes Trane is amazing knowing Trane was COSMIC!
Timeless!
"Timeless" indeed Edward!
Pharoah Sanders will be performing this weekend September 14&15th in DC at the Bohemian Caverns jazz club. Please everyone...check it out!!!!
