Stunning. Out of this world. The fact that the ornamentation in the da capo section is so tasteful means that the magnificent flourish at the end is all the more effective. So many young singers over-ornament and fire all their cannons before the get to the moments that really count.
that's saying a lot considering there is a live performance in 1960 that she took the top e with even more authority than she does with this alcina 23 years later. may i say she sounds and looks stunning in this production? this women is incredible to sing this aria so phenomenally well when she is already 57. we all will never see the likes of her again as many people have posted.
Absolutely. You can immediately tell this is the young, incomparable Sutherland with that brilliant tone before Richard Bonynge, mistakenly I think, helped her to lower the voice to improve her middle register resulting in a somewhat mushy tone making her sound too old for many of the roles she was still performing.
I think it lasted until about 1969-70, then she had a second voice from 71-80, and then the real decline started. The Fille du Regiment recordings are from the late 60s, and she is still "young" Sutherland.
This recording is from March-April 1962, taken from the complete recording of the work with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Bonynge.
If you got into the Zeffirelli production at Covebt Garden you got this TWICE - the encore after the final curtain and the bows - and you didn't need the Tube home afterwards - the music carried you.
Sutherland‘a is my favorite audio version of this. Natalie Dessay is the best action performed one I’ve seen on TH-cam. I could listen to this over and over.
An incredible recording of one of Handel's finest arias. Of course, this is a case of Dame Joan taking for herself an aria that does not actually belong to Alcina - which generally speaking is a practice I do not applaud. But in this case, there is no one else in the universe I would rather hear sing this aria than Sutherland.
I have a reprint of the 19th Cent. Chrysander edition of Alcina and there are two versions of the recit leading into this aria - one if Morgana sings it, and one if Alcina sings it, so Sutherland was not the first Alcina to sing it.
For the haters ( racist maybe?) who complain she used her sheet music, check out Dame Gwyneth Jones 1991 she had the words on the inside of her shield. And she is British. Stop yer hating.
This has to be the earlier recording with a later photo based on Sutherland's age. I would love to know who staged this production. The costumes are SO elaborate.
I think it was Franco Zeffirelli at la Fenice in Venice, where they had coined her La Stupenda at least this was the first time she performed Alcina in a major opera house in 1960
There is a fantastic radio broadcast of this opera recorded in the 50's, coupled with the other Handel's opera rodelinda, much better than this, which I find too fast, too. In her early career she sang beautifil baroque belcanto, but her voice soon lost her magic and she turned to popular, grand opera roles, suitable to average public and her declining skills. A pity, but anyway her lakme is wonderful!

👍👏👏👏
The live recording form the Festival Hall London is outstanding
The incomparable Joan Sutherland. The one and only La Stupenda. Thank you for posting this.
Her singing of Handel was as stunning as her famous bel canto roles. One of her “greatest hits” for sure.
Di un altro pianeta. Che meraviglia !!
Una meravella de veu. Única!

This recording is from the early 60s I think. She didn't sound like this after 1965.

@@jondavwal13 I think they began to strive for a darker, more "meaningful" voice when she began to sing Norma. It was never the same afterwards.

So beautiful! Bravissima! Always Class and great embellishments! No more, no less, just right! Such a beautiful piece of singing! Thanks for posting.

The incomparable "La Stupenda" , Dame Joan Sutherland.
This is the “Decca” recording, because if you listen carefully, you can hear the tempo mistake in the cadenza variata at 3:36
Brilliant in every way.

Thank God she stole it - one theft we of which we can all approve!

So this is from the Decca (London in the USA) recording of the whole opera w/ Berganza, Sinclair, Alva, Flagello, et al.??
Magnificent.
i mean.... is there anything she cannot sing better than anyone else
Wagner
Wagnerian roles, Gioconda, basically heavy soprano roles because she didn't have chest voice nor clarity in diction.
What key is this in?

DCFunBud John Pascoe! You can find some fascinating writings online by him regarding said 1983 Australian opera production. :D

The picture is from the Australian production in Sydney.
Thank you for all your replies. Sutherland and Bonynge brought so much magic to the world. We shall not see their likes again.
Sutherland non è il mio soprano preferito, ma in Alcina non la supera nessuno ❤
Hi! Which year was this recorded? Thanks
Cristian Ha 1962! The first full-length (more or less) recording and *maybe* even of this aria!
@@ChrisStockslager Thanks :)

Put the crack pipe down. Only one singer lost her magic early and it wasn’t Sutherland.
@@jondavwal13you can reply anything you want, it's your opinion against mine, but without this insulting incipit. Stop with your fentanyl diet, then
I find it beautiful, great flexibility, even though her diction is too poor. 🎉
I speak Italian as a first language and I can understand every word.
