rather than blue kote any food safe oil/salve tinted with blue or green colouring will help protect him from the other chickens (they are attracted to red and can be quite savage).
I isolated my chick that was injured with a few others, so it would not get lonely. It healed well and is now back with the flock. Jason get a thermometer that logs the low temp, and it may save you some worry.
We could speculate all day on what attacked the chickens but I think the hardware cloth will stop them from doing it again. The only way to be sure what animal it is would be to put out a game camera.
Penelope has a real interest in birds. I notice she can hold most of the chickens. It is very fun watching her reactions. LOL A hairbrush for a chicken.
Very unlikely hats it's vegans, since most vegans are totally for small and ethical farms like this. I'm going to guess that the thumbs down are just internet trolls who like to go around and give thumbs down to videos of people who are working their way up on TH-cam, just to make it harder for them. The same people who, in middle school, would knock over the awkward kids milk carton on their lunch tray. People who just like to ruin others happiness. Very sad.

Hardware cloth is a good plan! You might eventually want to add that all over as some predators can slice through chicken wire with their claws. Great reminder for everyone to be predator aware! ;)
Your place is looking so awesome and you're looking so comfortable in front of the camera these days.....you've learned and taught us so much ❣️ enjoy all your videos 👍
Raccoons are known for doing things like that. They reach through the chicken wire and try to get the chickens. It will be back. May also want to reinforce the door. Like a lock on bottom like in top. So glad you put the Hardware cloth in the Chicken Tractor. I'd do the other Chicken Tractor also. God Bless and Peace Be With You All ☮️🙏❣️
Once a smart racoon starts figuring out how to get in it often keeps trying -- I lost most of my chickens one winter because racoons figured out how to pry panes of glass out of an old window (5 feet off the ground!) in the barn, a neighbor had old patio slider doors on the side of his coop and they figured out how to open those or get them off the track.
Hi Jason we use a thing called snake mesh or mouse mesh - much finer - and we use tie wire to snig it to the chicken mesh if you don't replace the chicken mesh - works fine with all sorts of predators with several different jaws, beaks, tusks, claws, etc
They say that laying down a hardware cloth skirt around the base of the coop prevents predators from digging under...But I think the best solution is a guard dog!
We are just about to get going with our Suskovitch chicken tractor and I’m definitely using hardware cloth for the lower walls! Thanks for these great videos!
So many of us have gone the "cheaper" route, then end up redoing or modifying it to fix our cheap mistakes. The only good use of the first material is staple it along the bottom edge laying it on the ground to help prevent something from digging under.
I have the same tractor design and used hardware cloth but due to the predators i added 5” stand offs on the bottom 2x4 and ran a dc fence charger, so far so good.
I just love your pigs. They are not aggressive and they "talk" gentle. :-) You have a lot of baby chicks and glad you found the injured chick and fixed their coop before it was too late. I think a raccoon tried to get the chicken. You guys are a great team. :-)
Good idea about the electrical fence...you may even wnt to get a Trail Cam put up in there at night to find out what it was...Great job adding the extra small wire, they needed a lil more protection :)
Thanks for sharing. I’ve always wondered about predators and the mobile chicken shelters. Would love updates on that throughout the season. Thank you for sharing with us.
Idk why I giggled about her asking if he would be alright knowing that he is in fact a meat bird and will meet his end soon. Her genuine concern though! Love it
Good idea using the hardware cloth. I need to do mine since it has just the chicken wire as well. I was hoping to get through this next few weeks but now I’m worried.
Like others have said, my guess would be a raccoon. I have 1/2” hardware cloth on the bottom of my tractor. The problem I had would be the tractor not sitting perfectly flat and raccoons would dig and reach into those gaps and get my chickens. I lost several in one night last year because of this. Mine also like to lay against the wall. Makes it even easier for the predators. I ended up buying a solar charger and ran a single strand around the bottom. I haven’t had a problem since. I mounted the charger and the wire to the tractor so it all moves together. Good luck with everything!
rbtbeach did it work ok having wire on the bottom? I’m just about to build my first chicken tractor and wondered about using a wire bottom as I don’t have electric fence. But I worried it would make it hard for the birds to scratch around.
We're going to run into this exact same issue. Our place was a dump when we got it. Now that we've cleaned up the property and keeping animals I think it will be a whole different ball game in the future. We've just begun to see deer moving into the back of the property and know fox and bear is in the area because we've seen them around. Good video on an important subject! The brothers are looking great.
Hopefully the hardware cloth works. We had a coon rip off the chicken wire on our coop window and drag our chicken out once! Crazy! We have lost several chickens from predators through the years. I hope you don’t have anymore attacks. Enjoy your channel! Keep up the good work!
Hey guys! We have been following for a bit. We are staying on a friends homestead over in Marshall while we look for land here. Thanks for all your videos - we are learning a lot. Would love to meet you all sometime. Hope everything survived the cold. Sure is hot now!
Get some blu-kote helps disinfect wounds and keeps it clean. We had to do do that to our chicken who almost got caught by a raccoon. We also went to hardware cloth after.
All my mobiles have a layer of hardware cloth (about a foot up) around the bottom of all my mobiles. It keeps things from reaching in and keeps them from putting their heads out too.
I use Bluekote on injuries like that usually because it is anti bacterial, but not sure if it would help on an all white bird to keep the others from pecking. When my all white bird was attacked by the dogs I separated her to heal in our laundry room but she is a beloved Cochin and not a meat bird.
Man it got to 28 degrees here in Southern Indiana. I covered my garden but still lost part of my garden. That sucks but we got time. Had to reseed all my lost plants. If you give then whole corn it’ll worm them up. Their body’s heats up to digest the corn, so it keeps them warm. You need to clean the wound out and spray blue coat on it so it doesn’t get infected.
They have an antiseptic spray you could spray on the wound, or boric acid, just sprinkle the powder on the wound. Also the blood will make the other birds peck her wing so do use the blue kote as well. Definitely put smaller mesh fencing all around the bottom. I don't know if you have fox in your area but I was told they can dig under in a matter of minutes. Good luck!
D.E. is a good source of calcium, but if you need it for a louse treatment then it should be sprinkled, and rubbed in to their feathers. It also works for tics and fleas on other animals. It works in two ways it absorbs water and dehydrates the insects and at the same time becomes lodged in the insects joints and tears them up.
I agree with using hardware cloth-that's what I use at bottom 2 foot of chicken pen. Also the injured chick needs to be cleaned and antibiotic ointment applied twice a day and the chick needs to be isolated from the rest until healed. Chickens will peck at bloodied injured areas until they kill the injured chicken. BlueKote can be applied to injured site to prevent pecking and promote healing if you don't want to or can't isolate.
I spray blu kote on any injuries on my chickens so it covers the blood. The other chickens will keep picking and pecking if they see blood. It's a good antibacterial spray for livestock 😊
It’s got to be raccoons that are attacking your chicks. They will travel along your creek. It could also be weasels. Go out after sunset with a flashlight and see if you have eyes shining back at you. How do I private message you?
Penelope has a real interest in birds. I notice she can hold most of the chickens. It is very fun watching her reactions. LOL A hairbrush for a chicken. With feathers coming in their sometimes is blood as, IMHO, it hurts or itches them. I'm betting you've had a visitor during the night. Just keep your eyes on things. Isn't this weather crazy? Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Chickens huddle in the corner and the ones closest to the screen will get grabbed by a raccoon, which is why in corners with wire we ALWAYS make sure there is wood, metal sheeting so no raccoon paw can grab a chicken. Learned that the hard way....
There’s Weasels, Opossums. Rats, Racoons - and they can dig and go under (rat holes in grass can hide pretty well). They’ll attack again during the night if you don’t protect. Chicken wire is not totally safe...hardware cloth is best, they can put arms through the round mesh, rats could even squeeze through.
I agree with others. I would treat the injured birds for sure. Hardware cloth seems to be what people are using, but I’m thinking of using a sheet of tin all around ground level of my tractors.
Get some Vetericyn at Tractor Supply or Amazon and spray on wounds. You can even spray on humans if you get a scratch or something. The other birds may pick on the ones that are wounded. Pick at the wounds. Raccoons and opossums can bite thru the chicken wire and get in. I hope this helps. Sorry I commented on the video before it was over. Lol. Yay for hardware cloth!!
How's it going Jason another great video as always you always have to put Premier netting around your chicken co-op because the predators will get your birds one way or another the electrical fence will stop that For the most part
I had that happen to several of my quail. Something reached through the wire and got ahold of them. Unfortunately it killed the ones it got ahold of. I don't use chicken wire any more.
Suggestion 4 the brother's add some trimmed tree branches, give more greens like cut weeds from woods, the more activities the less destructive. Blessings n sunshine always
I'm surprised something has not dug under your runs. We had a mink kill our white chickens years ago and a rat dug under our chicken tractor. More likely to happen when I leave it in one place for a while. I use game cameras to determine what is coming around at night.
You should spray that with something like blu-coat. Chickens will peck at red and not stop. If ever a chicken has noticeable blood on them the other chickens will peck them to death. The use of hardware cloth around the bottom of your tractor is much better than chicken wire. Also chickens don’t look like they are sick until they are nearly dead. But you should alway have on hand an antiseptic spray and maybe a clotting powder in case of active bleeding.
We saw much the same, took a couple of seasons for the predators to start showing up. Opossums first, raccoons close behind, foxes, coyotes, hawks, snakes, and oh my, neighbors dog. Then came the mink. Everything is now secured with half inch hardware cloth. We have a number of ip cameras around our place to keep an eye on things. The cameras have been essential to identifying the predators we have in the area. Would never have even suspected a mink except having seen it on the video recording of the attack.
Spray with blue kote to keep the others from bothering his wound. Looks like a sneaky raccoon tried to grab him.
Don't spray with Blue Kote if you are going to eat the animal.
rather than blue kote any food safe oil/salve tinted with blue or green colouring will help protect him from the other chickens (they are attracted to red and can be quite savage).

It’s just all fun for Penelope! Children don’t bear the burden! So great to be a kid-trusting mom and dad that whatever comes-it will be alright!!
I’ve noticed with chickens when they are hurt or bleeding the other chickens will peck at them. You may want to quarantine him. Chickens love red
Thanks for the heads up. I will build my chicken space with hardware cloth as I'm thinking rodents after grain, and stray cats.
Really great channel, good luck to you all.
Thanks so much!
Hope the chicken are safer now that you put up the better fencing, they are growing well!😊👍💕
Maybe You need to put a fence on the floor of this chicken tractor. Mink can squeeze under areas that have no floor. Good luck.

Adding a low roost towards the center would also keep them away from the raccoons. Mine started using one pretty early. Also gets them off the ground.

G/day Jason how about putting the chicken wire on the for so nothing can in from the ground the grass will still come through it.
then it will be hard to move. I move these daily.
Also, the predators will dig under fences or walls. Need solid raised or concrete foundation.
Get a couple of barrels and paint them black an fill them with water... they will retain the heat and act as mini heaters over night
