Hi! I used to work in meat packaging. (I know. It sounds raunchy.) The reason so many things are mixed with pork is because pork is a very... malleable meat. You can mix it with just about anything to make it easier to work with/spread, and it has a relatively mild taste compared to most meats.
I grew up in the Carribean and we grew up on this stuff and its amazing when properly made. I loved potted meat over rice and scrambled eggs or mixed with cheese wheez as sandwich spread
I prefer the spam in the square containers. They are a little more solid. I like to fry my spam a little. Use it in sandwiches, instant ramen, with eggs, etc. I don't eat it often because it's so salty. But it was a staple for me when I was student.
It isn't actually cheaper than meat. Especially because it isn't as nutritious. Chicken is less than $1/pound. Idk what Spam costs but I bet it's more than a dollar.
@@bcaye they sell it at the 99cent store and Dollar Tree. They sell tuna too. They sell just about everything a college student could need. "What is potted meat?" Before refrigeration, they'd put the meat in actual clay pots, then seal the pots with a layer of fat to preserve it by keeping all the air out. They had to make sure there was no air at all inside, so they'd mash the meat up to ensure there were no air pockets.
+Derek Currie Botulism was a non-zero risk the same way it's a risk today when making pickled eggs, and for the same reason, but it's rare enough that people risked it then and risk it now. I've been making pickled eggs all my life and haven't contracted botulism yet, although I know there's a tiny risk it could happen. As Barbara Danley points out, they'd probably notice the smell if it did go off. And potted meat was only kept for a few weeks at most; it wasn't long-term preservation like smoking or drying, which reduced the risk.
In Hawaii Spam is a staple. Even the best restaurants serve it, but in a gourmet way. They have more flavors of Spam than I've ever seen in Pennsylvania.
The words 'Spam' and 'gourmet' should never be used in the same paragraph again. Economic collapse, personal loss, and several small breeds of birds and wildlife, all hang in the balance.
Living in Hawaii was when I was introduced to Spam Musubi (no clue how that is supposed to be spelled) in elementary school by a classmate. He actually brought in enough to make for the whole class for Show and Tell.
It's largely due to the rationing of food post-Pearl Harbor. Government aid came in the form of non-perishable goods such as canned meats, and Spam at the time was one of the major brands sent to help the relief effort.
@@THEGRUMPTRUCK Very true, but while most Americans didn't eat nearly as much Spam after the war, something about it made Hawaiians fall in love. They've been the top consumer of Spam in the United States ever since. Spam fried rice, spam and egg sandwiches, spamburgers, and Spam musubi, a sushi-roll-like Spam dish are all popular in Hawaii. Spam is also commonly served in saimein, a noodle soup similar to ramen popular in Hawaii. And of course, Spam and rice is common too. Spam is also somewhat popular in Japan, so it may just be that Spam goes better with Asian/Pacific dishes than it does in Western food. But aside from Spam musubi, it should NEVER be served cold.

The non-spreadable version of spam is much better. Especially if you slice it and give it a quick pan frying. The potted meat isn't really my thing, but its basically the same thing as Vienna sausages just not formed. Also very similar to a hot dog before it's been formed in a casing. Which is why it looks revolting, since it's emulsified meat.
Spam is great as a hiking food. It's light, doesn't need a can opener, dice some up and add to some rehydrated peppers and dried eggs, maybe some mushrooms, for a good omelette.

My mother grew up in Oklahoma during the Depression. She couldn't have cared less what it looked like. We got it spread on sandwich bread and ate it. It was tasty. Better than cold hot dogs sliced lengthwise and put between two pieces of bread. Mom knew how to stretch her food budget.
Hello there fellow Oklahoman! This was a great video for sure! My grandparents grew up then too and they taught us these kind of ways. My grandpa used to have bread and milk in a bowl like he was still in WW2.
We always omitted the sweet relish- just mixed with mayo. It’s salty and I hated the taste with sweet relish. Deviled ham is like nostalgic comfort food.
Marklar 75 You’re right, I didn’t use proper grammar. I will fix that. Dirt broke is an expression or phrase used to show how low on funds you are. It implies that the dirt has equal or greater wealth. Why did you add the Trump quote. I don’t have to like Trump to use bad grammar. I don’t have to hate Trump to use good grammar.
I had a Deviled Ham sandwich for lunch today. The plain white bread cuts the saltiness. Yeah, I know its not healthy but my mom fed them to me as a kid and every few months I want one. Just a funny coincidence ya'll did a video about it.
Jeff Morse I'm with you. I'm 52 and we had those sandwiches in the 70's and loved them! Don't eat them now as I'm trying to be healthy but I know what you mean about wanting to have a little piece of childhood every now and again. A little here and there won't kill us! Stay well my friend!
I actually grew up eating everything in this video😂 There were five of us kids and my mother had to stretch that dollar. She added Miracle Whip and pickle relish to stretch it further. I liked these better than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches👍🏾
I’m all for tuna in a tin but that’s where I draw the line on tinned animal mush. We could have literally been eating .5% meat and 99.5% unknown. Them odds are not in anyone’s favour 😅
Or scandinavian liver paté ! Norwegians eat this all the time. Brown bread. Liver paté. Sliced pickled gherkin or pickled beetroot...... 👍👍👍👍👍👍 Danish version ; Rye bread. Butter. Paté. Fried mushroom. Rasher of bacon ! 👌👌👌👌👌👌
See! you know what it's about! You use potted meat kind of like you use bologne or liverwurst. I make potted meat sandwiches all the time. Or like Nina was saying, nordic people eat food like this too...think of salmon paste, goose liver pate etc. spread it into a sandwich! Although, I admit I eat it on crackers just like they do in this video as well. More often though I will make pate sandwiches with tea or coffee with armour potted meat etc.(with mayonnaise and dill relish). Also I never noticed Mayonnaise has two Ns in it and I actually went to my fridge to double check youtube's spell checker. Sure enough it does.
Definitely gotta echo the sentiments of these foods being nostalgic from past/hard times and also being great for camping and hiking because they don't require refrigeration nor can openers.
Ireland? As an American, I'm so sorry. I'm so deeply, deeply sorry. You seem to have misunderstood: We only save this sort of food for emergencies. It's not a delicacy, it's something to dig into to numb the pain after going "welp, tornader just blew th' house away."

Depends on what it is. The Underwood stuff is so pricey that it goes better with a Ritz (just to convince yourself it was ACTUALLY worth it.) The $0.38 can of potted meat, however, well, discount saltines are too High Class for it...
My grandmother used to give me Underwood sandwiches when I was a little kid lol. I’m over 50 now and I have a can of it in my cabinet right this second! It’s like a bizarre comfort food at this point.
I always have Underwood Deviled Ham and Chicken in my cabinet in case I just want a quick sandwich. Both are really good IMO. They aren't the prettiest thing to look at, as the fat separates out and should be mixed when opened.
I’m from Mississippi, when I stayed with my grandparents in the country they always had most of these plus Vienna sausages and sardines. I have fond memories of most of those. The idea is off putting, but the taste is good.
@Cobb Knobbler WTF?! Are you serious?! She's gorgeous. Very envious of her hair, and skin too (we women notice that stuff) Anyway don't be a dipshit and say such things. Some opinions should be kept to yourself. Not necessary. Not cool 😎✌️
My ma used to make me sandwiches from that Underwood Chunky Chicken (You folks weren't blessed to get that one, but it was from the same company that made #2 * #4) Great stuff to a kid in the 70's. Come to think on it, the cans don't look any different... maybe they are the same ones? After all, what's 45 years to canned meat?
Out of all of these the ham spread was the only one I've ever seen, plus it's not meant to be eaten just out of the tin. You're suppost to put onions ,celery, hard boiled eggs, pickle relish, Dijon and mayo mixed together and put on bread that was cruel and unusual punishment to make them eat it plain.
Couldn’t touch it, smell it, or eat it, but I’ll tell you what, sliced ham from the deli, fresh batch bread, and a dolop of salad cream, and you’re set for life. Best ham sandwich ever.
Like a lot of people who have commented on here, I too had grown up in very modest times. I have had most of these at one time or another, and a few I still get on occasion. As the old saying goes, "an hungry belly is seldom a choosy belly".
I've always felt like processed meat products are only good in the way that they use up the spare parts of animals that would otherwise be discarded. Our meat industry is fucked but I'm a big fan of finding uses for every part of the animal including organs and bones. I'm not sure if the potted meat had it, but a lot of Vienna sausages and the like contain heart
Based on the comments, I wonder if these are more of a regional thing? I'm from Texas and I grew up on these, especially potted meat, so delicious. I would recommend Underwood's chicken spread with a dab of relish and mayo on toast.
From the FAR North Eastern US and the tinned meats are fairly popular up here too. Reminds me of my Grandmother canning Chicken and Beef in Mason Jars! She would make up PILES of the little 8 & 16 oz jars for when we were working the fences on the lower farm or on the Mountain getting firewood! Loved them to this day!
Grew up eating SPAM - grandparents ate it regularly. Traditional SPAM is a solid that is best sliced and fried crispy. It was developed in 1937 and was served to US troops in WWII. The spreadable meats are fantastic with cheese and crackers. The great thing about potable meats is their shelf life and no need of refrigeration prior to opening.
That's how it was done in my house, in the 1960s & 1970s. I sometimes get the urge, but as a somewhat responsible grown up, I get some liverwurst, put it on organic white bread w/Miracle Whip & organic American Cheese. Mmm, practically gor-met. Sorry, haven't found a natural/organic version of Miracle Whip, yet.
Potted meat and spam and other canned meats are an inexpensive way to for families on a fixed income to have meat on a regular basis. Grew up on these and I and I still like them. Spam sandwich with mustered and cheese on toast and a cold orange soda is still one of my favorites. 😁
They were originally simply a way to make use of pork shoulder which wasn't a popular cut and then it caught on as military rations because it's a great source of protein that is reliably preserved and easy to transport.

My dirt only breaks when it is dried mud cake dried out....think you meant you're as in you are.....making America great again?
Marklar 75 You’re right, I didn’t use proper grammar. I will fix that.
Dirt broke is an expression or phrase used to show how low on funds you are. It implies that the dirt has equal or greater wealth.
Why did you add the Trump quote. I don’t have to like Trump to use bad grammar. I don’t have to hate Trump to use good grammar.
I grew up taking this stuff hunting, and have grown to enjoy It.
I had a Deviled Ham sandwich for lunch today. The plain white bread cuts the saltiness. Yeah, I know its not healthy but my mom fed them to me as a kid and every few months I want one. Just a funny coincidence ya'll did a video about it.
I had canned chicken...
I always preferred the Deviled Chicken personally. Haven't eaten it in quite some time.
This. Also the occasional pimento cheese sandwich.
Deviled ham on white bread with some hard boiled egg, tomato, mayo, and a little salt and pepper. Not a bad sandwich at all.
Dont forget....the empty cans are ash trays or stereo building blocks-duh.

I actually grew up eating everything in this video😂 There were five of us kids and my mother had to stretch that dollar. She added Miracle Whip and pickle relish to stretch it further. I liked these better than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches👍🏾
"im gonna conquer this devil...I'm Jesus." XD I died
I’m all for tuna in a tin but that’s where I draw the line on tinned animal mush. We could have literally been eating .5% meat and 99.5% unknown. Them odds are not in anyone’s favour 😅
Lips, butts and assholes are the typical ingredients for canned meat. With the floor scraps top of course 🍽
"I'm gonna conquer this devil! I'm Jesus!" Oh Irish Jesus, you're hilarious
Alexandria Brooks 😂😂 the devil won that round
I was eating the Armor Star potted meat 50 years ago. You mix it with mayonnaise and pickle relish.
Like canned tuna
Or scandinavian liver paté !
Norwegians eat this all the time.
Brown bread. Liver paté. Sliced pickled gherkin or pickled beetroot...... 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Danish version ; Rye bread. Butter.
Potted meat with fresh off the skillet flour tortillas with a side of tang brings back memories at my grandmas waiting for the school bus
So you were eating that shit for breakfast
Now I want Tang! ( try it sprinkled on buttered toast!)
You poor child you are so brave to have survived such child abuse 👍👍😁

To the person who sent the Try guys canned meat:
Who hurt you?
Thank you. I wanted to ask who did this to them, but I like your way better.
Why? Why would you do that to the Irish? We like those folk, they're so nice!
Well, they ate it the only way that most Americans would eat it. Only if you pay them.
Born and raised in the USA, very, very, very thankful I've never had to eat any of that.
I'd do whatever I have to do to make sure it stays that way.
Ireland? As an American, I'm so sorry. I'm so deeply, deeply sorry. You seem to have misunderstood: We only save this sort of food for emergencies. It's not a delicacy, it's something to dig into to numb the pain after going "welp, tornader just blew th' house away."
So the Underwood brand of spreads was a god send when I was in the army.
More like the "Why?" channel.
As in, why would you do this to these lovely people?
Agreed
Dermot and Bláithin seemed to like it. Nobody else did, though.
Spam is amazing! You don't know what you're talkin about! Lol

as an american, canned meat is just torture. they do something wrong with it.
I wouldn't consider myself having a poor childhood, but I remember asking my mom to get some canned meat all the time because I really liked it.
Same. I like it, and for a stretch I had it several times a week.
I grew up eating stuff like this.
My husband just interrupted me watching this w/ friends, “It’s all fake you know?!” We shooed him away because he’s just jealous we all think Dermot is HOT 😂😂😂

Yep, SPAM was made to pack in MREs for rations during WW2.
Very 50's type stuff... I remember my grandparents used to buy that crap, nothing made me cringe more than when I was at their house and I would see them pulling out a can of that deviled ham.

Some people had to live on that stuff. I did, growing up. Some still do. Hi Dermot! Hi Shannon!

In thirty years, I've only seen people eat it from a can. (Gross as Hell)

Yup, agreed. Mayo or Miracle Whip for a counterpoint really helps. I also like pickles. Dill, or half sour, not sweet.

Yo, that Underwood chicken spread SLAPPED back in the day! Good memories!
I LOVE Deviled Ham!!! Spread that on some Wonder Bread w/Miracle Whip...GOOOOD! Sorry you guys did not take to it.
Never mistake the power of Miracle Whip. Ever try the same thing with a slice of tomato? So good.
Balsamic vinegar, Olive oil, and paprika. If you've ever dipped bread you'll notice it tastes exactly like miracle whip.(because that's what it is.)
"Have I mentioned my bowl disease before?" is actually my premiere chat-up line.

I used to love Underwood's Devilled Ham when I was a kid. I can't imagine that I'd like it now.
That was true but Spam now cost nearly $3.00 for a 12 oz can. You would be better off buying a pound of sliced ham for $4.00 or a pound of hamburger.

I can't imagine spam spread being great. Spam needs fried hard. In a few places in the US we have a thing called "ham salad" which is pretty good. It's minced/ ground cooked ham, mayo and pickle relish. Good on crackers.
