I was fortunate to score a 63 on the ASVAB, despite no studying and having graduated from high school 17 years ago. I came from a “working poor” household, where only my dad was the breadwinner and mom was a SAM, and i attended “decent enough” public schools. I relied heavily upon my learned knowledge in school, community college and work experience for the assembling objects and auto and shop information portion of the ASVAB. My score exceeded the minimum score required for the “mechanical” section of the USAF MAGE score chart. Now 9.5 months later, I am 2 weeks out from BMT shipout 🎉
Ayeeee. Let’s goo. Good luck on your future. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
My situation is quite similar to yours. I graduated high school over 20 years ago and only had 2 days to study for the ASVAB. I scored an 87 on the AFQT. We both proved that it can be done if people are willing to invest the time and effort to learn and study. Congratulations!
I was 28 when I took the ASVAB. My recruiter sent me a text with the categories on the test. I spent about 30 minutes on the ride to MEPS looking at the topics. I didn't study and had no prep time or strategy.
I take the results back to my recruiter, and he's jumping up and down, super excited that I made a 95.
I don't recommend that for most people. I was fortunate to have had a college education and some familiarity with the topics.
I wish I had studied a little bit. I’m 28 and I just took it 2 weeks ago. I got a 90
I wish folks would refrain from stating they did not study or studied very little and scored high or way above the minimum. Jody just showed statistics of AA scores and yet they choose to ignore statistics and claim otherwise. Please provide some context, tell us your SAT score or your average grade in high school. I was a C student when I took the ASVAB in high school. I walked in cold to the test center and I scored low. I took the ASVAB again 4 years later as I needed to retrain and scored in the 70's. This time I was focused and prepared myself.
Let's help each other to be our best. Jody provided 3 methods to help improve ASVAB scores, salute to you sir.
Way to improve those scores my guy. Love to see it. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Well I’m African American. I grew up lower middle class/ upper lower class. I didn’t study and I got a 90
I was absolutely terrible at math. Couldn't even do basic multiplication or didn't even know how to do addition with bigger numbers. I studied for about 2 and a half weeks using grammar hero and when I took the test I got a 67 with my highest being a 79 in general (which has all the math) I ship out in 2 months
That’s awesome grammar hero helped that much. Good luck on your future. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I'm 32 and planning on joining the Air Force very soon. I feel this will be the best thing for me in my entire life. Thank you Jody for these videos.
I’m 31 years old, only scored 14 at the first time at the recruiter’s office. After month and a half study the ASVAB book majorly Math and English vocabulary at average 4-5 hours a day, I scored 62 at MEPS, my recruiter was surprised too. It wasn’t easy, but nothing in life is easy. I’m going to MEPS for physical next week, hopefully everything goes well.
That’s amazing. I’m glad you put that hard work in and it paid off. Keep going. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
How it went bro?
@@redlightning007 I’m shipping out on 9/15. Getting little nervous and expecting at the same time.

Great video, Jody! I used PME Gold when I tested for Tech and MSgt; it took me several tries to get promoted when my peers were getting promoted. I struggled to test well until I learned how to study for the test. I even took the AVSAB again after 9 years of being in the Air Force; I tested to quality for retraining. So, I was able to increase my scores by 20 points across the test subjects. I went from being an aircraft maintainer to cross-training to an operations career field.
You nailed it about the collapse of American general public education . I grew up in a hood in Asia and didn't have a college degree, even a high school dropout, I graduated afterwards but was surprised that the basic math and science skills I learned in secondary school are from the Asvab which is so easy but lots of others, in the MEPS, was struggling to solve the basic problems. english literacy as well. The education level matters, not military issues tbh.
That's only a part of it, but not the most important part. The absent father is the number one reason for poverty and low academic success.
Im glad i came across your channel. i always thought about joining the military and never knew what branch but i know i want to be a mechanic of some sort thats what my heart wants ive tried the civilian route but man alot happens out here i wish i done it at 18 im 22 now and im glad that im serious about it this time around and grew more as a person so i can be ready for the great adventure thats next up.
That’s what’s up. I’m glad I could help and inspire. Good luck on your process. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
i made a 67 on my asvab around 2 years ago but didn’t join. now i’m wanting to join again, got to take the asvab again. hopefully it goes well, and i don’t go down in score.
Jody! Shipping out to Lackland today!
Ayeee big congrats. Glad to see you make it all the way through the process. Good luck at basic and with your journey. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
@@Jodywithawhy thank you Jody! Today’s my big day, will remember you 😃
Hey Jodi,
Can you make a video about the Air National Guard vs Air Force Reserve? I’m still not sure which one to pick since I work as a professor doing research, but would like to work in programming?
Failed out of college but got a 97 ASVAB go figure, all those failed calc 3 classes paid off lol
If you were taking calculus bud you knew you were above average
Started watching your videos a year before i went to my recruiter and now am finishing tech school. Crazy that i got the same AFSC and duty station that you did. Can’t wait to see what hurlburt field is like!
Ayeeee. Big congrats. Glad I could help and good luck at Hurlburt. I would recommend things to do, but it’s changed so much since I left, I don’t have any advice. lol.
I barely graduated high school on time and barely passed my classes and got all my scores on the asvab between 111 to 114 it took me 2 years to figure out why I was getting all the schools and retention begging my to reenlist every time
Been in the usaf for a year now. Your videos literally got me in lol. In Cannon AFB a little stinky but the friends and comrades I’ve made throughout out this journey are unmatched. If you’re thinking about joining do it don’t hold yourself back. It’s worth it. I’ve travelled alot and loved every second of it.
I made a 60 on my ASVAB when I was 17 back in DEC 2010. I left to joined the Air Force right after graduating high school in 2011
I really missed serving in the Air Force.
0:21 Not a speculation nor an assumption, but the reason is only partly due to the schools' resources. The other has to do with the amount of sheer stress people in poverty go through on a regular basis compared to people who are "well off". I was fortunate and unfortunate enough to experience both; 1st grade - 11th, I was brought up in poverty (had to get my first job doing tile at 14 to pay for food and help my mom pay rent, etc). 12th grade into college I got the upper middle class life, and let me tell ya it was night and day. Before, I was at a decent high school and I studied like my life depended on it and could barely hold a 3.0. For my senior year I attended one of the top and most competitive high schools in the US (by happenstance, not intentionally), I barely did homework and didn't study or prepare for a single exam. Graduated with a 3.8, you'd be surprised at how much further you can go simply by having peace of mind.
Edit: Also, to touch more on the subject of the video, I scored an 80 on the ASVAB despite coming up in poverty. I mention that to say, for anyone who's reading this, coming from a less than ideal upbringing, don't automatically assume you wont do well just because of the statistics.
Great job on the ASVAB and great point. 🙌🏽
I knew I failed immediately I said I wasn’t joining the army when they came to our school.
Got A 75 Without Studying.
That’s what hindered me out of high school when I wanted to go in. I was literally 1-2 points away from scoring high enough everytime and would have to wait months to a year to retest and it made me not want to go in anymore. I got discouraged But at 28 years old, I’m going to try again. I can do it. 💪🏾
Ayeee. You got it. I’m wishing you good luck. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Another thing also, if you’re an immigrant and English was not the language in which you studied in High School you should definitely get the book.
My first practice Asvab score was 👎🏾then my recruiter told me to come back 1 month after to take it a again so I decided to buy to Asvab for dummies. A month later, took the practice test for the second time and I got a higher score. While studying with the Asvab for dummies I realized how important it was for me to get the book, cause the terms I had to relearn those academic terms in English.
I also have to mention that as an immigrant I needed to get a good score to be qualified for more potential jobs.
This is great information.
I must be lucky cause I came from very low income and got an 87. Still ended up doing SecFo though.
Its all personal drive. As i said to people on social media, will power always exceeds resources.
@@strumminandwrenchin9162 I agree with you
You didn’t get lucky, you earned that. Good stuff. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Nah man or girl you worked hard for that! 💪
I graduated college but only got a 62 because I’m from an immigrant family and really didn’t had good resource for studying English , 😂I asked the dude came with me did you study, he be like why you need study this so easy and got 94, I felt a bit discouraged by that cuz I did and got lower
Can you serve for 30 years in the us Air Force? I would love to join but I am worried about the High Year Tenure policy. Imagine working really hard but unfortunately not getting promoted to the rank you need in order to stay in longer. Do you think you can make a video on the High Year tenure policy
You can stay in 30 years, but you have to make Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) to do so. Currently you can stay in for 20 years at Staff Sergeant (E-5) which will allow you to retire.
Math is my worst subject, specifically discrete math is the reason I can’t graduate yet 😭
got low 80s on overall ASVAB (with MAGE factored in)
Hey Jody. Quick question. If i had sold a gram or two of marijuana around 2019 , can this DQ me from going into the Air Force?
Ive applied to agencies for Law Enforcement and they have record of my PHS as well. I dont feel comfortable lying because my recruiter told me to. Its scary because they can definitely catch me on that.
Do they ask you questions regarding criminal activity you HAVE NOT been caught for? And if I only sold a gram or two. What are the probabilities. Im dead set on joining. And ive been struggling so heavily
Hey, I was searching something in the Air Force webpage, but in the requirements it says that they are accepting conditional residents, is that true ?
Hi, if I have IBS but I haven't had any treatment in 4 years and MEPS finds out, would I still be disqualified or is this something I can get a waiver for since its "controlled" without medications
Yes grammar hero is truly a hero 💯
Hi Jody I have a child that was diagnosed with autism went young age of 5 and adhd. Now 19 years old. No medication. He wants to join the Air Force. The asvat score 14 . What is your recommendation. And having those diagnosed at a young age would affect him join the military. His gpa in high school 2.1 after graduation. Please advise me . He did jrct in high school
If I scored a 90 on the PiCAT, should that transfer to the ASVAB knowledge?
You’re next step would to go to MEPS and take the verification test for your PICAT score to become your ASVAB score.
I only remember stuff from teachers I liked in high school
Teachers make or break the experience.
If you go to south Korea for your first assignment do you get automatic 30 days of leave before you ship off to South Korea
73 without studying! Im Hispanic
Hi I was thinking about joining the military soon but I also wanted to start seeing a therapist will that affect me from joining.
yes because they will ask you about depression i’m sorry to say. on the flip side you can beat depression alone i believe in you, and if you start to feel okay you can go to the recruiter and leave out the depression part.
ive been watching grammar hero for a while now and it helps me a lot but i always seem to lack with remembering what i learned the next day and I graduate HS in a month and i'm trying to get into the marines. Are there any study methods i can do for me to have better memory so i can perform well on the Picat/ASVAB?

@@queenofshortstv7847 thx, im using quizlet
Hey, I have a question on what to do. Im 14 heading to high school, turning 15 in January, and wanted to know what to do. I have chosen the Air Force due to my mom beinging army and dad a Marine, and they said that air force would be better for me for a job after i retire from the air force. I was wondering what i could do for it. Im doing the program when in 11th grade to get 5 guaranteed jobs. I have talked to a recruiter in my town in NC and was wondering if you would mention anything he hasnt said to me. I'm mostly wondering what i should train for or anything. I just want to make sure im all set for it when i leave. I would be leaving after high school graduation and then leaving for BMT in the fall afterward due to how i sweat very easily and a lot of sweat. I just wanted to know because you are kinda the only person i watch about this i look at flights that happen to see if anything changes so i could note that and know, I have asvab for dummies, Aim high app, and another asvab practice. I like using the practices you post about due to them being free because my family isn't in the best of times with money but should get better as time goes on. I was wondering if you knew and / or could send me some links so i can do practice asvabs. Keep up the good work, please. I dont know who I'd watch for this stuff if it wasn't for you.
I would work out and get into shape, and also study for the ASVAB. It sounds like you’re already studying, so keep that up and also start a workout program if you haven’t already. I would also recommend getting mentally prepared and read leadership books prior to leaving. I don’t have any other practice tests websites to recommend, but they’re easy to find if you dig deep enough. I hope this helps and good luck. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
@@Jodywithawhy thank you I'll will use this advice
Hey Jody, I passed the ASVAB but I'm just waiting on my medical. Is TB disqualifying in your experience if it was treated and documented and cleared by the county where i was treated. Does MEPS require a waiver for this?
It is disqualifying but it can be medically waived if you can provide documentation of completion of treatment.
How long do recommend studying before taking the test? Like weeks or months before
This is case by case. Some people only need two weeks, some need 4 months. It just depends on how far off you are from the scores you want. If you’re really far off, I would recommend at least putting about 30 days into studying.
Could your next one feature someone who passed the AFQOT
Helping a friend out
Hello I took a pulmonary test and the results said I had mild asthma, is there a way to get past this ?
The only way is to take another pulmonary test with no issues and then submit the new results requesting a medical waiver.
@@JodywithawhyI’m going to meet with my recruiter again tomorrow should I request one with her ?
I scored a 50 on the asvab with out studying aswell, should I push to retake the test or be content with that score?
Leave the score alone, you have a good score. As far as the medical waiver, you can ask her to submit one but without a good pulmonary function test, you’re gonna have a hard time getting qualified. I would recommend talking with the recruiter to see how they wanna proceed.
The G Factor; The Science of Mental Ability. The bell curve is real.
Math is my worst subject
Yes mine too
It’s tough but don’t let it hold you back from passing the test.
Just finished taking the pretest for the asvab at my recruiters office. Scored a 51, the word knowledge killed me but i did great on arithmetic and math. He still recommended that i study with guides and websites
Idk how some people can’t even pass. The test is super easy
Well many people have test anxiety or are just not great in math, which cause’s failure.
This is a very insensitive thing to say. Not everyone has the resources or knowledge in order to pass. Think before you speak 😐
@@slimmeezy6965 I get what you’re trying to say but I’m saying just the bare minimum 31 score. Information is easier to access than ever. If they dedicated an hour a day for 2 weeks I’d promise most would be scoring 50 or higher
