Some interesting background to this speech is that it was something Chaplin himself wrote for the film (which he also directed), and in it, is playing a Jewish barber that ends up looking identical to the Hitler character of the film, and thus ends up giving this speech under the guise of being Hitler, as the climax of an otherwise comedic/satirical film. And evidently soon after is when the true horrors of the oncoming war became evident, and after people found out what truly was happening in Germany and the neighbouring countries, Chaplin himself said he never would have made a comedic film about it, but I think most everyone is very glad, because otherwise this speech never would have happened! (Also some trivia I've heard about it is that Hitler himself saw the film. Twice. Then banned it.)
Another interesting bit to add: Most people today don't realize the courage Chaplain had in making this movie. At the time of it's release, American was at peace with Nazi Germany, and many in this country actually supported them. Charlie himself was often "accused" of being Jewish before he even made the film because of his opposition to the Nazis. (he didn't dignify this with a denial)
It's the only part I kinda disagree with. If it wasn't because of people thinking too much and feeling too little we wouldn't have gotten to a point where we have the luxury of debating this very question and try to find an answer.
@@ragnar97 "We think to much" Oh man, my neighbour got a new car, i wish i had that much money, how do i get that much money?" "We feel to little" But do i realy need that? Am i not happy with what i have? Do i need more to feel more?
I just love the fact that what Charlie is essentially saying here is, "Workers of the world, unite. You have nothing to lose but your chains." Words which were written almost 100 years earlier in 1848.
And to think this is the man who gave the world the song 'Smile' even though he was suffering from depression. A severely underrated actor, in my humble opinion. Thanks for reacting to this, Billy.
Agree with you. A lot of people take advantage of other people because of greed, selfishness, status, etc. You are right that everyone should be treated with respect, regardless of their race, background, economic status, or whatever. Every country has its leader and this kind and gentle message should start from the top and admonish his citizens to follow and toe the line. However and sadly, that's not the case and the reality is some people are just nasty and intolerant of others. This anger towards their fellowmen brews inside their hearts and when that implodes, that's what starts disobedience, unrest, curses, fights, rallies, riots, and finally wars. The problem is we all are not robots. We have a conscience and free will and the way we use them are not the same all throughout and it's all up to each and every human being. In a nutshell, no one can dictate and command that we all should love everyone. It is sad but it is the nature of being human.
