First of all, I passed. So the above statement is incorrect. 2nd, sure, I'll just adjust my knee board while trying to control the aircraft while there's a set of perfectly good hands sitting in the other seat. Apparently you don't know what safety first means. And THIRD, This is NOT my flight school. This is where is did my CHECK RIDE. Completely unfamiliar with the area. Before the checkride, he said HE WILL HANDLE THE RADIO NAV FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE CHECK RIDE. Thanks for your comment.
Good video Josh, thanks for sharing. He was a good examiner, the best ones look at the big picture, make you relaxed, and don't nitpick the small stuff. Great job passing your checkride. Good luck with your future flying.=)
Thanks for all of your video efforts to show people what it is like for a check ride. Also thanks for letting me hitch-hike onboard with you, the ride was fantastic! The autorotation scared the Hell out of me though, not your flying it, just I didn't think there was clearance above the buildings. That could be the camera's view though & I am sure in person it was all fine. Great job well done & congrats on passing.
Awesome Flight Video, to share your check ride with all of us, wow. When I got my Private Pilot Fixed Wing Certificate, I was so nervous but your were so cool. The Marines will be getting an awesome Helicopter Pilot, Thanks Again.
Wow your DPE sounds like a really cool guy. I flew out of Chino but I've also flown to Long Beach and Compton. Seeing your video sure brings back a lot of memories. Congrats on your check ride.
Joshua Hamby, thanks for posting, I am starting school in January with Central Oregon Community College and Leading Edge Aviation. I am starting off with about 1 hour flight time. Best of luck on your next ratings!
Hi, Passed checkride last year at another airport in CA. This tube helped me a lot, thanks! Trained a lot at LGB and CPM. Our authority(JCAB) offers complex class ratings for helicopter. .Piston or turbine .Single or multiple engines .Land or sea (float equipped) So my 1st PIC flight is on R66 :)
was stationed @ Santa Ana w/the blimp hangers Marine Air Wing, we spent all our ups and downs heading for the hills or off to get our feet wet. looked a lot different in the 70's.Great narration and views, kept wanting to join in the conversation, natural CFI
Congratulations! thinking about getting my add on..being an airline pilot is boring, I need this excitement and something different. and most certainly in GA! fly on! nicely done!
Awesome video, great checkout ride, wx viz unlimited. Nice control work, very smooth. I fly fixed wing, our military base is closed to general avi, I was a member there for 22yrs
Great job Josh! Hope you are still flying. I was an Army DUSTOFF pilot and enjoyed flight school very much. You appear to have the same passion for flying. Keep going, and disregard any negative comments you will see here. Flying is a virus. Once bitten, you are always infected! Good luck with your next ticket, which should be your commercial. (THAT is a fun check ride!) Know your EP's!!!!!
Dude. That was the most lax checkride I've ever seen. And I'm not hating on you, good for you. Out here, on my checkride, the DPE did not do a SINGLE thing. As a matter of fact, he said that if he did, automatic fail. In other words, for proving single pilot resource management. If I'd have asked him to take control while I fixed my knee board....lol...noooope. I look at it this way, in the real world if you're flying somewhere alone and you don't have your info on your knee board where you can see it...what would you do? But I'm not being a dick buddy, congrats on getting your ticket. :)
I've mentioned in other comments, the airport was unfamiliar and he is required there to handle parts of it. they have very specific ways of doing things there that you would have to have ground school on and it wasn't a class, it was a maneuver test.
+Caleb Evenson it got a little pricey as you know. I was trying to take the VA route, still in process. since here I've gotten about 40 hours or so, but that's about it. depressing
I feel ya man. VA for me as well. Yeah, expensive. And hard. But, if it was easy, everyone would do it. Eh? Did I hear Torrence on the radio? I'll be headed that way in February for the Robinson safety course. Every CFII is required to take it where I'm at.
That was awesome! I watched it all. What a great DPE you had, helpful and taking care of much of the comms. Wish you'd had a still photo at the end with you and the Robbie and your temp certificate. Great video. Happy skies to you!
Congrats on passing your checkride Joshua. I wish I could have joined the army too and fly, but when you have medical problems.... I have heard civic helicopters is a great school to learn at.
Thanks alot. He was a very calm examiner. He's a Robinson test pilot. My instructor flew with me from Carlsbad up there for the checkride, then flew back with me.
the military is a great way to go. im a Marine now, going into the army to fly as a warrant officer. since you're getting your degree, you can go fly for any branch as an officer. otherwise, if you do some enlisted time, you can use your gi bill and go to awesome programs like Guidance Aviation that will get you up to CFII on the governments dime. if not the military, it will be very expensive.
I saw a designated examiner fault a student for immediately pulling pitch and not stopping at a hover doing a maximum performance take off. He said if you get in the habit of just yanking the collective up... and one day you do it from grass or mud (soft field) and a skid sticks in the mud you will have a dynamic rollover so fast you won't know what happened. But it looks like you did a great job! Every examiner is different. Mine flew Chinooks in Vietnam and is a super cool guy.
thanks for checkin it out. LA is a fun area. REALLY busy compared to SD county. You should fly down here some time. Let's Bravo airspace lol. We're out of Palomar, Civic Helicopters. I'll definitely check your channel and subscribe.
Very nice job and congrats on your exam. Seemed like a really nice examiner, and he was obviously comfortable chatting because you were doing so well. I had to chuckle when you asked if you were doing okay after 45 minutes of flying! I am curious..when you asked about directions to get out of there at the end, did that mean that you flew out by yourself when you were finished? Awesome video, thanks for posting.
interesting- thanks for sharing- didn't think you could get a view forward/outside and still get you and the person in the left seat in view mounted whilst being mounted on wind screen- I'll experiment with this angle whenever I'm allowed to film again..all the best
Congratulation on your checkride,am not a heli pilot but i enjoy every minute.wish you the best.i wish i could get heli lincense but i dont fit in the R22.
yeah, so many people Jerry (Silver State Helicopter) injured destroyed careers, families and lives and now he is a deputy in a reservation, " Upholding the Law?"
My original plan was to go Army after going through ROTC in college, but since I have asthma, I'm not able to. So it looks like the civilian route is all I'm able to do unfortunately.
Hey thanks alot. I'm about to go fly for the Army soon. Gettin paid for hours is the dream. lol Congrats on the flying success. Turbine time is precious.
Hi one of the best vids I have enjoyed on this site you have handled that well , only thing I did not notice was the flare in the auto but it was a run on , , I couldn't see why the instructor needed controll at any time for any thing you could not had done. ,but maby he wanted to approach his way tight , but well done , if it was me I would dump the r22 s for a better model but that's only my preference .thankyou
I graduated high school, 3 years later, joined the Marine Corps. Paid out of pocket for the private pilot license, now i've just gotten out 5 years later. I only have a PPL, so I don't have a job. I'm going to school in January to finish my ratings. My advice, do a term in the military, get your GI BIll, and use it to pay for flight school. Unless you have a couple hundred grand to throw around.
Awesome video! I'm an aviation major and a freshman in college but am hoping to start training at a school here in TN within the next few years. Are you planning to go commerical? Any suggestions?
Awesome! Imam private pilot (255 hrs all R22 time) was working towards commercial then had to take seem unexpected breaks from flying. I've been researching what schools to go to for my commercial, and maybe CFI .. Eventually Instrument (although I shoulda done instrument on the way to commercial.. Long story) what school is this? And is your DPE still doing check rides? Hit me up!
One week till I take mine in the Cabri. Looked like a very laid back checkride which is awesome. Hoping for something along those lines. Did yall not do confines or pinnacles?
The Cabri, nice. Been looking at those lately. We didn't do any pinnacles or confined areas, sadly. Those are my favorites. Good luck on the checkride. Ace it!
I appreciate it. Yea I don't get how or why people decide to dig for negative things to say. I put this up to give people a heads up as to what to expect from an FAA checkride. Thanks again tho.
thanks for your reply Joshua-I understand Tom of 'tomshelistuff' is soon to do his check ride with Doug too- I'm training with Star Helicopters (out of Hawthorne, near LAX)- just had my 2nd flight with them- was filming my flights but my instructor doesn't want me filming anymore for 'legal' reasons, which sucks as I find watching the videos helpful in review as I often miss something that's said at the time..how did you mount your gopro- to the headset hook on the back wall? Safe flying!
Is a check ride required for all pilots? If a pilot has their own bird (wishful thinking) and flies regularly and accrues sufficient flight hours, does the check ride become unnecessary?
fantastic video- thanks for sharing- belated congratulations-great job! Do you remember your examiner's name? My instructor says Doug can demo getting into & safely out of a low g situation at the end of the checkride & wondered if you you did that? The examiner didn't mind you filming the checkride?
Nice vid man, but which flight school do you attend where the examiner takes controls while you adjust knee board, and makes your radio calls for you? Examiner touching controls = check ride fail.

hey Josh congrats! I'm taking mine tomorrow so I'm studying yours lol! By the way, what camera did you use to shoot this on? And does it also record audio from the radio? Thanks!
That's an interesting checkride. The DPE is sharing cockpit duties, something I haven't heard of before. I do realize, however, that his help was required because the area was unfamiliar. Not to take anything away from you, you did some good flying.. Good job..
Joshua Hamby Yes, that must have been stressful to fly an unfamiliar area during a checkride! I was lucky enough to have my CR at the airport at which I trained. You did some good flying, especially under those stressful conditions.

Nice vid man, but which flight school do you attend where the examiner takes controls while you adjust knee board, and makes your radio calls for you? Examiner touching controls = check ride fail.
Didn't think most DPE's would be okay with a Camera on board, but cool!
Did you pass without making your position calls in crosswind/downwind at Compton?
Good video. I have a question, how did you record the radio talk? I have check all over and I can only find audio hardware to record in fixed wing.
I agree with you on safety first and foremost. If he wanted the navs, let him go for it. Great job.
