Whenever I'm watching disc golf videos on TH-cam (which is...often) my daughter asks if I'm watching "the funny guy". Lots of love for you (and your videos) over here Jonathan!
I used only stable or overstable distance drivers for years with my forehand. At a tournament, I won a superduper understable (-4) distance driver but I did not use it until a friend told me to try it. I went from throwing around 100 meters to 120-130 meters with the help of huge flex shots and it is amazing! Helped me to get potential eagles and birdies on long par 4 and par 5 holes. Happy friday!
Shaky shaky shank shank describes me perfectly! That is one grip I have not tried. Thank you for sharing and I wish you and all the super groovy L64 folks a lovely weekend.
Hey Jonathan. I wanted to say a huge thank you to you, Johannes & everyone at L64. Your content is great fun to watch while being informative at the same time. As someone who recently completed a Master's degree in Marketing here in the UK, you inspired me to do one of my assessments on starting my own disc golf brand. If DG was bigger in the UK then I'd take even more inspiration from you as I would absolutely LOVE to do what you're doing with L64. I'm sorry to hear about your most recent news which is why I wanted to write you this message. I know the 2023 pro season is coming to a close but looking forward to next year, I want to wish you the very best with your DG content & I'm already looking forward to seeing what shenanigans you & the crew get upto in 2024. All the best Jonathan & thanks again for your hard work in producing such enjoyable content. Cheers.
I hope you are doing OK (within reason). I have lost both of my parents (my mother 2 years ago) and it's never easy. Know that there are MANY people in your corner supporting you through this difficult time. Peace and love to you and your friends and family.
Hi Jonathan. I am from Montreal Canada. I have a Retro Fuse. It works incredibly well for me and I love it. Today I ordered a new Fuse. Opto Smiley Jonathan Edition, in pink so I don't lose it. I can't wait to get it. 4 day shipping. Thank you for being so much fun. Our family loves you and your videos. ❤
What really helped me with forehand is flexing your wrist back even before the run up. So its in kind of a locked position backwards already. Helped me with the spin in a HUGE way
Appreciate that, I'll give this one a try. I noticed when I take a disc while casually walking and do a flick it works so much better than when I'm trying to actually throw it for a real shot. This might be the thing I'm missing to have a more consistent flick.
I use my left hand and turn the disc actively back until mid of run up. Then on release there is much more twisting motion. Can confirm this even brings more than only shift throwing hand back. Use both hands😅
Love these videos! Seeing the Scott Stokely video that finally noted that a one finger grip was good for people without great wrist flexibility was a game changer for me. I am glad it is working for you as well Jonathan! My forehand also went from not useful at all to often the better option than my backhand!
"Full power banana hammock" Please make a video explaining this. Anyway, you are the best Johnathan! It's always great content. You are a fun person, and it feels like a friend is here every time you pop up. Thanks again for brightening my day!
im only throwing forehand, i tryed throw with two fingers at first but changed to one finger pritty early because it feelt more natural more stable. i approve jonathans tips
Thank you for the mention about the 1 finger forehand, i hear so often that you shouldn't do that, but like you, i get a lot more spin on the disc. Awesome video...as usual !
I'll have to give that one-finger forehand a shot! I took a few indoor practice swings with it just now and I could feel a difference. Thanks for the tips!
Jonathan thank you. You are one of the main reasons my first discs were the Latitude retro starter set i got a couple weeks ago. Truly love your content ❤️ (p.s. Fuse is the best)
I am doing one finger forehand since I have been playing disc golf. I have tried doing it with two, but it makes my wrist hurt. Stick to what feels natural for you. If it works and gets the results - you are doing something right!
Agree the one finger forhand was a game changer for me. I too got the shakey shake when I used 2. One is perfect & I can SEND it! Good content. Keep it conning
Shaky shaky shank shank! I'm really enjoying the extra Swedish comments. Keep sharing them! Your forehand has really improved lately, as seen in the videos in Vermont. Thanks for the tips. Best to you and your family.
Hi Jonathan had to tell you that I call your videos the 2 LL's Learn and laugh they are just plain great informative and funny videos. Love the way you do them. By the way I found the only way I can throw a decent forehand is by using 1 finger grip.. Like you said use what works. Keep up the great work.
My forehands were terrible, except for when I was stuck in the bushes and couldn't swing my arm-- I could only flick my wrist. Those shots were pretty good. Now I put most of my focus on the last moment of the throw-- putting power into the wrist flick-- and my forehands have improved a ton.
Best thing for me was to video myself. I try to do a couple slow-motion vids from behind and from the side. I'm in the same boat, I gotta do one-steps which help me focus on coiling and proper form on that last step which is everything.
What really helped my forehurboggle was to increase the angle of my heisenflabben and a difference it made for my twertleshire 1 stats was nothing short of ameliacrakerflaken. Hope this helps.
Great tips, I now realize I have legs 😊. My biggest realization was that I have very weak arms so no power there, everything has to come from the torso.
One reason for rolling a wrist with more than one finger is this. With one finger it is easy and natural to have palm going foward instead the side of a hand. Then you don't roll a wrist. If you use two fingers, then natural motion changes and there is higher tendency to throw side of the hand forward and palm facing up. That is what they mean by serving a pizza. That was the sidearm form 10-15 years ago. If you use two fingers, then you need to turn your fingers against the rim so that it isn't really natural, but if you don't do it, then you easily roll your wrist. Anatomical thing how our bodies and in this case hand and wrist works. Might not be the case for everyone, but is for many. It is quite easy to detect these when you just sit on a chair or sofa or where ever and hold a disc and twist and turn it in your hand. See where you have the most mobility in a wrist in forehand and where wrist has the least tendency to roll over when you move your hand in forehand line.
Got my first ever back to back birdies using my Jonathan signature fuse a few days ago :D Best disc golf content there is. Hope you are doing ok Jonathan
Switching to the "flipping the bird grip" (seen some places call it split finger, some power grip, basically your middle finger on the rim, and your pointy and thumb as a 👌) for forehands was an absolute gamechanger. For my hands atleast with the two finger grips when my thrumb is trying to meet the finger tips, it tenses up my wrist and I end up throwing everything on a slight anhyzer to alot of anhyzer. And trying to throw it with some hyzer usually ends up with trying to bend my wrist into a position that feels painful and unnatural. But with the 👌grip, the thumb doesn't need to reach as far, so it's much more relaxed and so my wrists are much more relaxed and therefore giving it hyzer or anhyzer angle is so much more natural, and I almost have no wobble anymore on my forehands. Before I would always throw super overstable discs for my forehands to compensate for the anhyzer, but now I even feel comfortable forehanding a glitch (oh wait, l64 video... I mean beetle, ofcourse! :p) and trust that I won't turn it over. So now I'm more prone to throwing a forehand when it calls for a shot finishing to the right rather than try a super touchy anhyzer thing with backhand, which in turn has helped my scores because always throwing the hole the easiest way you can will generally give the most consistent results. Maybe I just have really short thumbs and that's why this grip suits me better, but just hear me out, try both grips and really look at the muscles in your thumb/wrist and compare how "at rest" your wrist is. Also, please make some Moonshine Diamonds! Like the new Opto Ice Orbit Diamonds look amazing, but imagine having glow in the rim like the Moonshine Orbit Felons you did. The Diamond is my absolute favorite get out of jail for free disc, because if you mess up and have a very bad lay, you can still get some great distance with it with minimal effort. And for low-mid power hyzerflips it's great, and for that hyzer to turnover shot it's amazing! Last year playing alot of glow golf in the wet muddy/snowy weather I was often in a situation where I was really missing my lovely Diamonds.
I am a basketball player. I learned to shoot with both hands, and I am pretty good with both. I am more accurate with my right hand though...I am right-handed. When I started playing disc golf, I tried forehand, and I just sucked at it. So I decided to throw with my left hand instead. I throw just as far with both hands, but again, I am a little more accurate with my right hand. Does anyone else have a similar experience? Or, do you think I should just learn to throw a forehand?
Really funny and informative video! Loved it. The forehand tips that helped me the most after watching tens of videos without improvement - I came upon Scott Stokely's sidearm videos and it finally made sense and worked for me. I actually have a forehand now.
I love your videos Jonathan and Lat64 Fam. I hope each day is getting easier and easier. I wish you and your family the best in these times and that you hit the purest lines, the easiest putts, and the sickest tree kicks. Love ya, from the west coast (of USA, lol) P.s. have ya listened to Unleashed the Archers? Reccomend "Awakening"
Thank you for the tips. In my case, I use different grips, depending by the category of discs I use, but also depending by the purpose of the throw. - Backhands: 1) Putts, putters with fan grip and index finger on the rim (I actually have horrible problems in putting, but not for the grip I think); 2) Short approach (from 20 to 30 m - I have quite acceptable short approach throw), putters with the index finger a little more under the rim 3)Long approach (from 30 up to 60 m), putters with a grip more similar to the power grip, but modified, with the straightened middle finger 4) Long approach (from 60 to 70 m), midranges, also with the gripo 3, but with the power grip if I use (as frequently use) gloves 5) Fairway throws, power grip, with fairway or distance driver (I reach max 80-95 m). Perhaps because of these differences I am backhand dominant very bad player 😁 - Forehands (very badly thrown) 1) Index and middle finger straight along the rim (more lighter discs) 2) Two fingers, but with the middle finger bent. But I am an horrible forhand player 😁 and I almost exclusively throw forehands with a River 168 g, and to distances up to 40-50 m.
Some players are using one finger for finesse throws and approaches and forehand "putts" for control and use two fingers for power forehands. They find easier to control angles and speed etc. with one finger. I have done it for 20 years and not planning to stop doing it.
I will try the last tip to improve my forehand I was thinking about it during the video because my mind works in mysterious ways so I really hope it works
for me a big change in my distance and getting power from my legs more was to start my throw with my front foot. starting on the ball of my foot after the cross step to brace my front foor I then focus on moving to my heel. and secondary to that I move my arm back but because I focus on my feet it will lag behind creating more of a whip motion and that seems to give me more power.
I came from playing a lot of ultimate, so my instinct was to use 2 fingers on my forehand. I noticed it didn't feel great and switched to one finger and it has felt much more natural to me and I've made better shots because of it.
Great video. I’ll happily take more “ Remember disc is fun do what makes you happy” content a lot more. Also I want to be friends with Jonathan and Johanes(… not sure how to spell it) they seem very fun to be around
used the onefinger FH grip since i started with DG, but only with the wide rim, Distance Driver discs, prefere stable/overstable discs, my favourites Lat64 RECOIL :) there i get the for me proper grip and spin with the disc, with the wide rim that DD have, with FD, Mids and Putters, i use stacked twofingers, my one tip, fore the FH, is that many almost every one have "Kastat macka" (in swedish) means throwing flat stones at the water make them Jump multiple times, do the same thing with your forehand, bent knees a bit lower your body and RIPP IT ! :) by the way, my "thaughts" about onefinger, i get more/easy backvrist, therefore more spin on the disc, than with two fingers, it inhibits it :)
Also, once you throw about 50 mph (85kph) suddenly all the angles of your throw start to matter and around 55-60mph (90-95kph) launch, nose and hyzer angle, are all very important not only for distance but just getting a predictable flight out of disc that isn't very overstable.
I'm having trouble with consistency in my back hand shots. Currently I don't focus on a "release point" and I'm just lining up my shoulder with the basket or gap then letting my disc release where ever it naturally leaves my hand. I'm assuming its at a 12:00 position when it releases naturally or when my arm is in line with my shoulder. I often end up sending the disc more right then expected. To adjust for this have been turning the back of my shoulder a little more to the target and playing with a three finder power grip. My question would be, Should I be focusing more on where I through the back of my hand? for example should I focus on throwing the back of my hand more at a 11:00 o clock position or a 10:00 o clock position in relation to my shoulder?
Thanks for the video. Lots of laughs and good advise. I have an unusual problem though as I can not use the modified fan grip for my backhand because I broke my index finder and it will not bend into the proper place. It only bends to 90 degrees. One of the pros I am learning from says he gets most of his distance from that very index finder, well his not mine. I have been placing it on the rim, edge of the disc sort of like you were using in the approach shot. I read everywhere that this will cut down on my distance. I can get at the best 250 feet but play with others who are throwing 350 feet. Thankfully my approach shots and putting are pretty good and help to keep me in contention with the others. Just can’t seem to get any more distance and it is getting frustration. Any ideas of what to do with that index finger beside cutting it off?
I got about 20m more distance, way more control and even more shot shapes to my forehand shots by ignoring the tip everyone gives that you shouldn't put pressure in the flight plate but on the rim of the disc. If I do that my release will wobble A LOT. However if I DO squeeze the flight plate I get way more snap, more spin and a clean release. Grips are very individual.
I have played for 20 years and I have never head that don't put pressure in the flight plate. To me that sounds really weird. That is where you get much of the grip, spin and power. If you look at pros when they are throwing, disc/flight plate is pretty warped because of the pressure they put on it.
I’m a noob disc golfer. I sprained my elbow on a backhanded throw so I started throwing forehand and I’m getting better distance. I’m going to try the single finger grip for forehand during my practice this afternoon. I’ve been getting about 60 meter / 180 foot forehand throws. I’m trying to lose the wobble and get better accuracy, though my discs are landing within 5-6 meters / 15-20 feet of each other. Let’s see if a single finger grip can fix it.
i have a tip for your forehand try to Hyzer Flip an under stable disc especially a mid range.. you will have to have the disc not up in air but lower to ground just reverse of back hand etc. when you figure out how to do that you can start to use more stable discs and slightly bring up your arm to flat.. the disc will pop up to flat maybe small bit of turn and fade back for not only more distance but now youre actually playing disc golf that can be played in any wind condition!
Shifting focus to a point past all those trees is such a good idea! I can’t tell you how many times I consciously thought about hitting all those trees and it happened 😂😂
Most effective forehand tip i've heard for eliminating wobble is to grip the disc really hard and just focus on that. After a bit of trying and getting used to it you should tone it down a bit but at least i kept the stability.
Buy Fuse? Or something else? Maybe a Fuse? 👇😉🤘 /Jonathan

- Forehands (very badly thrown) 1) Index and middle finger straight along the rim (more lighter discs) 2) Two fingers, but with the middle finger bent. But I am an horrible forhand player 😁 and I almost exclusively throw forehands with a River 168 g, and to distances up to 40-50 m.
I mainly throw Alfa Discs & have their molds in multiple plastics & use a certain disc for a shot. They make great disc!
It’s never even occurred to me to try a one finger forehand. I’ll give it a shot when I play tomorrow morning.
Some players are using one finger for finesse throws and approaches and forehand "putts" for control and use two fingers for power forehands. They find easier to control angles and speed etc. with one finger. I have done it for 20 years and not planning to stop doing it.
Jonathon has the most infectious giggle
Good video! My forehand is baaaad. Gonna try the one finger grip!
I will try the last tip to improve my forehand I was thinking about it during the video because my mind works in mysterious ways so I really hope it works
On behalf of the amazing disc golf community please do not think you owe us.
I will take it though as it brings me joy.
Hugs for you and the family!
for me a big change in my distance and getting power from my legs more was to start my throw with my front foot. starting on the ball of my foot after the cross step to brace my front foor I then focus on moving to my heel. and secondary to that I move my arm back but because I focus on my feet it will lag behind creating more of a whip motion and that seems to give me more power.
I use one finger on my forehand shots, and it works for me. I didn't know Gossage did the same.
I came from playing a lot of ultimate, so my instinct was to use 2 fingers on my forehand. I noticed it didn't feel great and switched to one finger and it has felt much more natural to me and I've made better shots because of it.
For forehand I used two grips. For control, I use a 2 finger grip and distance I use a split grip. with the outer finger finger tucked in
Great video. I’ll happily take more “ Remember disc is fun do what makes you happy” content a lot more.
Also I want to be friends with Jonathan and Johanes(… not sure how to spell it) they seem very fun to be around
Can't love this video enough!
"Full power banana hammock" had me on the floor 🤣😂😂🤣
"Full ...power...Banana...Hammock" is diabolical 😂
used the onefinger FH grip since i started with DG, but only with the wide rim, Distance Driver discs, prefere stable/overstable discs, my favourites Lat64 RECOIL :) there i get the for me proper grip and spin with the disc, with the wide rim that DD have, with FD, Mids and Putters, i use stacked twofingers, my one tip, fore the FH, is that many almost every one have "Kastat macka" (in swedish) means throwing flat stones at the water make them Jump multiple times, do the same thing with your forehand, bent knees a bit lower your body and RIPP IT !
Rock solid content as usual! Love
I freaking Love this guy!! Hahah
Funny AND informative 😂.
My favorite European comedy duo
i have a tip for your forehand try to Hyzer Flip an under stable disc especially a mid range.. you will have to have the disc not up in air but lower to ground just reverse of back hand etc. when you figure out how to do that you can start to use more stable discs and slightly bring up your arm to flat.. the disc will pop up to flat maybe small bit of turn and fade back for not only more distance but now youre actually playing disc golf that can be played in any wind condition!
Shifting focus to a point past all those trees is such a good idea! I can’t tell you how many times I consciously thought about hitting all those trees and it happened 😂😂
Back to basic.. älskar det.
The student has become the master 😏
Haha not yet =)
Use your big muscles to impress no one 😂😂 Du är bara helt bäst 😁
Play with drivers only is the best tip. You begin to understand the discs so much better
Jonathan slowly integrating Swedish into my vocabulary
I’m glad you mentionned it, I used to throw forehand with 3 fingers but I did hurt kitten while doing so. I don’t recommend.
Most effective forehand tip i've heard for eliminating wobble is to grip the disc really hard and just focus on that. After a bit of trying and getting used to it you should tone it down a bit but at least i kept the stability.
