    I cannot believe that the Star Wars franchise, that is supposedly "important" to Disney, was handled this badly.

    • @wbeytel
      @wbeytel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @Greg Elchert I totally agree. It is totally mind-boggling that they are this inept with an IP they paid 4 billion dollars for. You would think they would at least put in the barest minimum of effort to at least recoup their initial expenditure first, make a solid profit and only after that try to "subvert expectations".

    • @SageofStars
      @SageofStars 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      To be fair, they're trying to be hands off, like they are with lots of their sub companies. They buy them because they make money, and they expect them to keep doing so, maybe with a nudge every now and then. The problem here is, the person in charge of the sub company was a bit...mental, and in love with the idea of putting her mark on the franchise, bringing in 'new' fans, and dumping the old, as the image of the old kind of wasn't what she wanted. The problem was...well, this channel has been over that time and time again.

      zoompt 1975, I left TFA apologizing to the family members I made come with me. . . . I learned my lesson and went to TLJ alone. I left in total and immediate shock. Without giving any spoilers or details to them, I simply told those waiting for the next showing of TLJ not to expect too much - that it was indeed awful! (They had already purchased their tickets. I was doing them a favor by lowering their expectations.) . . . I learned my lesson and I’m not even going to see TRoS at all - ever. Not one dime, Disney. Not one dime!

The majority of fans absolutely detest Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson - if the president of Disney had come out and had a press conference and publicly commented on their terminations that would have rebuilt some good will. But by doubling down and keeping people like Kathleen Kennedy around, it just pisses the fans off even more. Contrary to the self-destructive and inexplicable tone-deafness of Disney, the dwindling interest of the fanbase in Star Wars since its multibillion dollars purchase from George Lucas is a rational consumer response.
    Practically speaking, The Last Jedi was a branding/marketing "neutron bomb" which left Star Wars a desolate toxic wasteland of an IP. One of the greatest lessons I was blessed to learn under the tutelage of some of the best practitioners of brand management was legacy brands DO NOT belong to companies holding them but are the "property" of their supportive consumer bases. IP holders should act like "trustees" not "owners".
    JJ Abrams may realize his involvement with Episode 9 has set him up to be the fall guy for Rian Johnson's and Kathleen Kennedy's colossally inept butchering of Star Wars. Rumors of reshoots and six different endings of Episode 9 if true, confirm the tragic consequence of how monumentally broken the Star Wars IP is like a proverbial Humpty Dumpty.
    In my humble opinion as a decades-long fan of the Star Wars brand Disney's best course is to indefinitely postpone the theatrical release of Star Wars; The Rise of Skywalker and begin the public crucifixions of Mr. Johnson and Ms. Kennedy

    • @____uncompetative
      @____uncompetative 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Max Covfefe
      I think the theme was "learning from failure" and the story was a redemption arc for Luke and a belated exposition on the origin of Kylo.
      In a way it is a remake of _Return of the Jedi_ except Luke fails to redeem Vader despite sensing that there is still good in him, Emperor dies. Because of this similarity, the Sequel Trilogy could be regarded as exploring similar scenarios to the Original Trilogy, but having Kylo choose the alternative outcome and not be redeemed. This puts _The Rise of Skywalker_ in uncharted territory, with the most likely outcome being that Rey has to kill Kylo after some considerable reluctance. Some fate of the galaxy stakes are needed to justify this action, so maybe Kylo is going to harvest the Kyber crystals that powered the destructive beam of the second Death Star and use them to equip a fleet of Super Star Destroyers with mini super weapons each of which can melt the surface of a planet. Kylo will be stopped before he gets around to constructing this enormous fleet, so the array of ships in the recent trailer was probably a vision of the future rather than something someone has got. Kylo does have the mini Death Star thing that he used to pierce the door of the old Rebel Base on Crait probably back aboard his ship, so I wouldn't put it past him to melt the surface of Pasaana in hopes he would kill Rey after she fled from their lightsaber battle, assuming she was still on the surface as the Millennium Falcon had left without her earlier. Kylo will be super evil and likely kill Rose as he tortures her to death for information on the location of the Resistance that she doesn't know, and this coupled with the genocide of the peaceful kite flying inhabitants of Pasaana should make even the strongest ReyLo 'shippers question the chances of their bad boy's chances for redemption. It will ultimately be revealed after Rey kills Kylo that Luke has to defeat the evil spirit that used him as its host after he killed its previous host, Snoke. This evil Sith Force Ghost would be Luke's grandfather, Darth Plagueis the Wise. Rey would eventually reunite with her parents, Luke and Mara Jade (who had given her daughter false memories and hidden her on Jakku from the corruptive influence of Snoke who wanted Luke's child to be his apprentice). Luke actually ignited his green lightsaber on seeing the evil spirit of Darth Plagueis haunting Ben Solo, but then Ben woke at the sound of this lightsaber being ignited and turned to defend himself and misconstrued the situation, incorrectly jumping to the conclusion that his uncle wanted to murder him in his sleep. Ben would then bring the ceiling stones down on Luke's head, leaving him with an impaired memory of the event, which he inferred that he must have suffered a moment of weakness, which was not the case. The couple of contradictory flashbacks in _The Last Jedi_ are by unreliable narrators so neither of them are true. This means that _Episode VIII_ largely serves as a clever misdirect to make audiences stop speculating that Rey is Luke's daughter and then be surprised when this predictable reveal is the case.

    It's a dire situation. They wasted two movies to try and force the audience to love the new characters, but failed badly at creating any sense of stakes. The feminist messaging of having Rey beat everyone who opposes her within the scene has left us with a situation where the only question to be answered is 'how fast will she beat whatever the final boss of this dumb movie ends up being'. If they make it Palpatine, all that does is undermine all the previous movies as 'bringing in a woman to do the job properly' is the same tired trope that Hollywood has been trotting out with Ghostbusters, Batwoman, Captain Marvel, etc. These aren't well thought out concepts, just 'what if woman'... ok sure, but don't forget to write a story worth telling for your female protagonists to inhabit. And for god sakes the villains need to win most of the time and actually hurt them, or there's no sense of peril - a hero who is not at risk is a zero, like Rey.

    The damage is too great. The Rise of Skywalker cannot fix what The Last Jedi did to Luke's character. The entire trilogy has completely negated the purpose of the original trilogy and the things all those characters fought for by resetting the universe back to square one. Han Solo can not be redeemed from the hapless bum with the smuggler's life that he returned to in The Force Awakens. Leia's actress is gone, and her ability to have a significant effect on this last film is now considerably limited, and we STILL have not heard a single apology or admission of guilt concerning Lucasfilm's reaction to fan dissatisfaction surrounding episode eight.
    Whether 'The Rise of Skywalker' turns out to be a good movie or not, I'm no longer interested in the story, nor the characters that remain. Even if it turns out to be something exceptional, Star Wars is now permanently scarred unless they scrap everything Disney has done and try again.

      @Pulmonox 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Gravivector One could only hope. Unfortunately: A- Everyone would have to be re-cast. Something I suppose I could live with, but it wouldn't be quite the same. B- Unless Zahn is personally involved in the scripting, I don't think Disney/Lucasfilm currently has skilled enough writers able to pull it off. Even WITH Zahn he's not a screenwriter, and may not be able to properly adapt his stories. And frankly... I'm not sure I WANT Disney to screw with those stories. I'd rather remember them with fondness.

Instead of realizing that he was responsible for Kylo's rampage and that he was likely the only person who could possibly stop him and without even ATTEMPTING to fix said mistake, he decided to screw off into some unknown part of the galaxy, hide himself away like a coward, and leave the Galaxy to deal with the problem he caused and give up on the child of his best friend and sister who he clearly didn't have the guts to face any longer.

      That's because we don't deserve an apology. What should they apologize for exactly? For trying their best to make a good, original star wars movie for everyone to enjoy but unintentionally coming up a little short in the end for a lot of people because the ppl who worked on the movie are human and ppl make mistakes and it's impossible to please everybody especially with a franchise as beloved, popular, and nostalgic as Star Wars making a divisive film nobody agrees on is almost a guarantee. Also resetting it to square 1 is a good thing because if he didn't then there is literally nowhere else to go with the franchise besides repeating the exact same things/copying the originals and if you're gonna just do that then there isn't even any point in making "New" movies in the 1st place. Plus I don't care what anybody says about Rian Johnson, he's 1 of the most talented young writer/director working today and every movie he's ever made has proved that. His movies are better on average than like 80% of the garbage that comes out every single year, and I'd put him in the top 10-20% of directors working today no question if you look at the consistent quality of the stuff he's done and the consistent not-quality of stuff made by the average writer/director. Even his worst movie the Last Jedi fucking crushes the prequels easy, no question in terms of overall quality and entertainment level, and whoever doesn't agree with that is either not being objective, are being swayed by their own personal bias and emotions, or they just don't know enough about what makes a good film (Writing/directing/dialogue/themes/style/choreography/acting/cinematography/skill/talent/imagination/creativity/etc.) And Disney fucked up big time by not letting him do his own trilogy and firing him but keeping those 2 idiots from GOT who are obviously complete hacks unless they have someone actually talented to copy off of who's holding their hands. I just don't get why people freak out so damn bad about the last jedi/Rian Johnson, it makes no sense to me. They literally act like it's 1 of the most terrible things mankind has ever seen and it's just so bad that it boggles the mind when even with all of it's many mistakes taken into account it's still better than the vast majority of shit that comes out every single year and is so far away from being as bad as they make it out to be that it's honestly ridiculous. OG trilogy, Prequels, Books, comics, Video games everything. My wife likes action movies and is okay with star wars but not a big fan. We saw TLJ with the kids and ten minutes in I was ready to leave, but I bit my tongue and kept quiet, only making a sarcastic quip when I saw the holdo outmaneuver. So following the conclusion I looked over and asked my wife what she thought and without any prompting she started laughing and said "That was bad." Tangent here, but that further confirmed all the reasons why I love that woman. lol. The movie was just bad. It amazes me because I am not a hyper critical fan. I can and have forgiven plenty of blunders but this was a god awful mess of a movie. I'm going to point to another series that was derailed and came back.
      Highlander was a cult classic movie that many people wrote in begging for a sequel. Highlander 2 was complete and utter garbage. It makes TLJ look like a competently made film. Everyone assumed that it was the end to the series before it got out of the gate.
      However, a TV series was started and it completely ignored the events in Highlander 2. The series was popular enough to make it to 6 seasons and I believe 3 more movies were produced.
      It is possible for Star Wars to come back. They will have to ignore the sequel trilogy. I also think that we can't expect this to turn around with the current leadership of Lucasfilm and probably Disney.

Here’s what would’ve helped .... lightsabers... people love lightsabers!!! People now are loving the prequels why cuz of lightsabers and duels! That’s why so many people are SW fans in the first place-the lightsaber! What happened to all the lightsabers the Jedi had and backups they had ala aotc??? To the point where they had great houses . I digress, empire is the best, but number two to me is rots, some things could’ve been better but whatever. At least it was extremely fun seeing it in the theater and honestly the prequels have better rewatchability to me than the originals because of all the moving piece. Politics, war, duels, philosophy, & a love story. Idk what this Disney logy has given us other than Kylo ren who is represented fantastic, poster child for milenials, cool helmet, lightsaber that actually prevents one from losing a Han! But not knowing if Rey is his relative by now kills any love story. Unless we’re going Lannister rules then fair game... Disney did hire the double ds for the next trilogy. That's a good point about how Kylo's been beat twice now. The story of this trilogy so far seems to be: bad guys build up enormous power. Good guys win against huge odds and annihilate everything the bad guys have created. Then next movie the bad guys are back and just as powerful as before. The cycle repeats. There's no sense of progression like in the original trilogy, partly because the First Order is so badly defined. That is indeed something I and others have been saying since it happened. Its the biggest change to canon in the film, allowing them to weaponize hyperspace like that. Even outside legends, in Rebels, a show produced by disney itself, Hyperspacing into a solid object will have you 'phase' through it instead. There are explanations for it, like say the Hyperspace Tracker was partially in Hyperspace, allowing for the collision or something, but even then, it's going to take time from a story that already has a lot of ground to cover to establish that.

      @@thedarkapex5327 The problem here is, they introduced a super weapon, that literally everyone has, and with no limits shown on screen. The Hyperspace ram changes all of Star Wars, if you can turn an X-Wing(Which we know can have a hyperdrive even in films, because Luke's does), into a missile at light speed, then how are you going to have battles anymore? Heck, shields couldn't even defend the Supremacy, the largest non-starbase ship in the SW canon at this point.
      And the filmmaker's themselves, at the very best, have said that this wouldn't work....because it wouldn't work. Not really a reason, because they don't have one, because the whole point was, it looked pretty, throw it in, and damn the consequences. They screwed up a lot, but this addition is the one that most damages what came before, and what comes after, and if JJ does not address it in any way, just choosing to ignore it, then he's already lost.

      @@thedarkapex5327 Oh but it does. Why should anyone fight those epic space battles anymore, when you can just load a droid brain(Which in this continuity we have seen pilot ships on their own), and have them slam into the enemy? You can respond with, well then why don't they just all build death star lasers, but then, old canon actually answered that, in several ways(And new canon does too, though they seem to be ignoring it).
      If you're curious, old canon said it was just really expensive. Like the Hutts, the Cartels? They had to pump what was literally half their organization's funds from several years into a project called Dark Saber to build just the gun part of the Death Star, and even then, they screwed it up, both because people found out about it, and they hired cheap contractors who skimmed from the top, and built a subpar product. New Canon just says the Death Star's main gun required Kyber Crystals, and a lot of them, which is why the Emperor was raiding all those temples and Jedi Store Houses.
      Meanwhile, a hyperdrive? Those are loaded onto fighters, cheap, disposable fighters, that can now be filled with explosives, or just heavy materials, and then rammed into the enemy. Why wouldn't someone do this? A waste of resources? How is it that? We saw how powerful the Raddis slamming into the Supremacy was, taking out not just the big ship, but over a dozen other ships, all the same size. That's a hell of a kill/loss ratio by ship size.

      I don't think it would be fair for JJ to say that Rian fucked things up. It's fair for us to say so, but not for JJ. He made a pretty good mess himself by not planning the trilogy out properly and created a lot of missing story elements that had "to be fixed later" over them. I did like TFA (though far less now after analyzing it), but that movie set the whole series up for failure.
      Mind you, I'm not making excuses for Rian. He may have been excused if he had just chosen not to fix the problems inherited from TFA and just passed them on to the last movie, but he basically quintupled them up.

There were things that should have been covered already in TFA, most pressingly how the heck the first order got that powerful, but were left out. They could have been covered in a later movie, but doing so in a way that feels natural and flows well within the narrative is harder than doing it in the first movie. A second movie will have its own challenges, so saddling it with burdens that the first movie should have carried on top of its own burdens means the second writer has to be much more skilled than the first writer to pull it off. So, if JJ wrote all three sequels, he'd have to be better than himself. Granted, it would still have been much better than what Rian did, but I'm fairly sure there would have been a big problem once the third movie hits and JJ would have to tie everything together.

A young Jedi comes to his side and asks if he is alright and Luke shakes it off, telling them he has seen the possible future were he to betray every thing he'd ever learned and believed and sits alone on a planet drinking blue milk. This means all of the DIsney movies had been a bad dream and were wiped away as Luke stands tall and raises his light saber, soon joined by several other Jedi he has been training, begging the TRUE rise of Skywalker.
