I have the Supermoto version here, the Xt660x and it's an absolute joy, power is enough, blasting from corner to corner and there are barely any other motorcycles that can keep up on a curvy road. Currently I have 45.000km put on it and it still runs like a champ without a single issue, even after standing still for a few months this Xt will always start whilst I have to push start the other motorcycles at home. Got a Tom Tom Rider 400 last year and have been exploring a lot. 250km with a full tank before going on reserve and this whilst twisting thz throttle very often. The only downside is the occasional stalling, but you learn to live with it. The stats of the bike are more then enough to have a ton of fun in the Belgian Ardennes.

XTR does have weak front brake, but "supermoto" twin, XTX fixes that issue. Weaving on roads might come from knobby tyres. Cutting out at low rpms usually comes from too low idle revs, early production models had faulty TPS and dodgy ECU though. Stock exhaust is obscenely heavy indeed, 2in1 exhaust mod is simple way of shaving 10kgs off the bike as well increasing ground clearance. Display holds surprisingly elaborate diagnostic mode, showing a lot of data - throttle position, tachometer, air/coolant temp, battery voltage, lean indicator, checks for cooling fan, fuel injector, spark plug, handy for DIY
It is not performance bike, but then it lasts with only basic maintenance required (oil change every 10k, valves screw type every 20k). Basically modernized DR650 or KLR 650 with FI, even if tad obese.

For me high speed wobble happens from wind hitting your shoulders when you're holding the bars too tight. I understand other things can come into play but next time you have this issue, loosen up and pay attention to the buffeting on your shoulders.

If ever you are renting a bike on your travels, there's a good chance you'll end up with this :D Quite a fun bike, unless you are given a bike with what would feel like plastic wheels, squared off in the back. A nightmare thing to ride for instance in narrow winding roads of Greece :D Also older versions were quite abysmal to ride in the city (about 50 km/h 35mph) due to shitty fuel injection. The bike would jerk back-and-forth like a deer with hick-ups.. But other than that, as said - a wonderful thing!

Good alternative to a DR650 .. with added benefit of Fuel Injection, Water-Cooling & Roller-Rockers in the top end, also 30klos lighter than a XT660Z Tenere making it unpretentious as a pretend desert racer because it's a just a good basic trail-bike (Kev-Fix XT660 online to sort out the fuelling problem without the $$ of a power-commander).

It's so easy to give a harsh review on a bike that is not produced anymore. No worries about the manufacturer anger!!! This xt is a very good bike. Little money for huge fun!!! It can take you anywhere on and off road on a low maintenance and fuel budget!!! Plus the low profile! It's in the same category as the KLR or DR but more reliable and more capable off road! Also the long range maintenance on it is incredible!!!! I'm sure it's because you had a rental that you had such bad sensations! Also maybe you are too used to the modern bikes with all the electronic assistance that obliges you to go back to the manufacturer for every repair!
    Stay safe and have fun!

The bike replaced the XT600E, I owned a 2000 model, it was a natural upgrade to the 660 engine, fuel injection and water-cooling to meet euro design rules, but they should have upped the HP, as the engine is bulletproof, and changing brake pads to EBC brings a instant change.

I have 2 2007 xt660r one with 5000 miles the other with 8,000 miles both show room condition 1 owner bikes (me the second). I would not have one as my only bike. but will always keep one in my garage. grate fun in the highland of Scotland. I take them up in the van ,400 miles is to far for one of these on a motorway they just don't do it well . but once on the back roads i do 300 to 400 miles every day for 4 to 5 days then bring them back in the van. only time they are used really (wife rides one). mine has all the extras on it leo vince exhaust, fuel mod, air box mod,,bash plate, shock , DNA filters and so on and on lol. never have any problem with cutting out now i have added the kev's fuel mod (did before) up rated brake lines, that makes the brakes a bit better.Good reliable bike not the fastest. mine will do 100 mph but to be honest don't take it over 80mph any more just no need for the riding we do in Scotland anything up to 75 is fun after that front end wobbles a bit but that's half the fun some times . really easy to ride and fun. Only thing i would say is if using in the wet ACF50 the engine as the paint will come off the engine and look really poor. but overall as a slower bike i would give it the thumbs up. the xt660x is a much better ride (i had one). but you will find they are around £1000 more than the xt660R for the same year.If buying one hold out for a good one they are out there, don't just buy the cheapest it will cost you in the long run. These are so easy to service your self. i do mine every 1000 miles (over the top i know) Bit its a big single and i like to keep mine mint. and its only and oil and oil filter change so is cheap as chips.Ride safe everyone

Today bikes milleage is ~40 000 and that was only one issue. It has Evo 1 tuning set, some small oil consumption also. Riding typically almost to red rpm field.

Its heavy and very hight on seated mode.
I only recomend Metzeler Endurance for road trip. Enduro you choise.
Most off al my breaked bones were stoped or not more then 20 KmH. No short legs aloud.
I did change the seat for larger one , because after 140 Km your but will hurt.
    I love the bike.
Once again its like this...or you love , or you hate.
    Nice Minarelli engine.

I'd take those comments about the brakes with grain of salt, because off road tires suck at tarmac. I have the X version and I never felt the brakes weren't good enough, but yeah don't hit the rear brake too hard. Suspension is not great I'll agree with that, especially the rear suspension.

It is beyond me that this bike never made it to the US… even Suzuki and Honda kept their 650 unchanged and carb’ed thumpers (DR and XR) in play until 2024… with EFI and at least front ABS and at a low price this bike would have made a big impact in the Enduro scene….

  • @clusterm2
    @clusterm2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The bike stall because yamaha have been forced to design the bikes to run too lean (emissions) which is much easier to get away with when you have more than one cylinder... cure is the Kev mod (Google) ....
or better still, find yourself a bmw x country 160kg (XT 180 kg), 52 hp (XT 48 hp), not top heavy like the XT, they have a fairly low seat height (I'm 5'9" and feet flat on floor), the Rotax engine will pull from very low revs unlike the XT and they're fairly inexpensive as they stopped making them after 2009. The only downside is less ground clearance.... These are the reasons I sold my Xt660 and bought the x country, even just moving the bike around my garage is much easier due to the low centre of gravity :)

Nialsy999 Well mine has been really safe and relliable, and I use it to go to work everyday (50km), used it on long trips and a lot of offroad.
This being said, I changed the front fork for a ohlins USD, and metal hoses on the front brake (sorry for my english I dont know if thats the correct term) and it made a world of diference, next up its changing the exhaust for something lighter than that horrible 12 kilos cans..
