This video is 10 years old and I still come back to watch it all the time. It’s so soothing and it brought me a weird amount of comfort when I found it after starting 6th grade. I’m about to graduate college and whenever I have a hard day, I toss this on and learn how to retouch my photos in an app I don’t even use. Hope this isn’t weird, just wanted to say how much I love this video.
It'd be nice if commenters concentrated on what she's presenting, rather than commenting on her voice. Women ought to be able to share ideas without the first noticeable aspect of their presentations being the sexy factor of their voices. Clean it up, guys.
Best Frequency separation video tutorial I have seen so far. Great job, good tutorial. (Also like everyone else here I think that you have the best voice.)
This is one of my favorite tutorials on youtube! Thank god someone is not trying to explain things but rather just show how it's done! I wish I could just filter youtube tutorial videos by the labels of TIMEWASTER and NON-TIMEWASTER. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the Clear, well voiced tutorial! Great to actually hear someone talking their way through their workflow, rather than poorly chosen music, and watching someone do their thing with no audio. I will be trying these steps, and hopefully achieve what i need to. Once again A BIG thanks, and greetings from Australia!!
Your voice attenuation is absolutely precious! I just love listening to you speak! And thank you so much for the tutorial! It has helped me understand so much more about photoshop and what to look for on set to minimize post-editing stress!
1) your friend's eyes are soooooooooooooo beautiful 2) photoshop is seriously such an art. you have to have that special eye. I've watched a million tutorials but i still can't do this. I admire you
Thank you, Sara, for a very good demonstration. The background music on many videos is obtrusive and distracts from the subject, but here it complements the video. Many people on TH-cam mumble or talk quickly or are in some other way unintelligible, or they speak haltingly, peppering their speech with 'er', 'um' and so on, which may indicate a lack of preparation or an insufficient knowledge of the subject and makes them hard to follow, but you speak clearly and engagingly. I'm impressed that you do all this with the trackpad; you must have slender fingers and short nails.
Yeah, you really do have a voice that I could just listen to in the backgroun while editing. I've had you as a contact on flickr for years now. Really great tutorial. Thanks!
This was the best tutorial I've watched on you tube, and your pics on fb and your site are off the chain [I know, not very formal of me], but I just wanted to say thanks for the ant files. I am a journalism major, and decided to pic up a camera, then got to taking pictures, loved it, then decided to try Photoshop, loved it even more. Now I want to this to be my second profession. The two can work together, but with this, I can make a little to get me through college, and you are helping.
OMG! This was a feakin' AWESOME tutorial. Seriously. I've watched many others on frequency separation that just were not easy to follow at all. Yours is very clear. Thanks!!!
AH! Thank you for actually explaining what you're doing and what too you're actually using, because most videos I found were sped up and I had no idea what they're doing or what tools they're using, so thank you. Great tutorial! (: And such a sweet and lovely voice to do videos like this! Keep doing them!
Thank you for an excellent video with new ways of approaching skin retouching. It was good to see a "real" photo taken of a "real" model in circumstances that most of us will find ourselves and results that can be achieved by many of us. Great work !!
I just watched some other tutorials that didn't pay as much attention to detail as you. The people doing them were guys, which I won't say is the reason, but you definitely worked on the makeup and mentioned a lot of things that girls (like me) would appreciate like highlighting, that they didn't talk about at all. I can't wait to try some of your techniques!
This has been the most helpful tutorial I've seen so far. Your skills are way beyond mine, and I learned a lot from watching this! I love your picture, beautiful model and you did a great job editing! Thank you! And if you ever get the time to do a video explaining layers and how to use them, that would be really helpful! Thanks!
Wow, awesome tutorial. First of all, I had never heard of this technique, so it was good to learn. Secondly, the quality of the audio and video, along with your easy-to-listen-to voice, was very nice. I do hope to see more tutorials from you in the future. I'd love to get a tutorial on how you use a trackpad so fast and efficiently in Photoshop. I was shocked when I heard you say you didn't even have a mouse. I must be missing some hints and tricks to maximize my mobile photoshop experience.
Far out this brought a whole new light to my skin retouching process. Never knew the patch tool existed! So much better than the healing tool. Thankyou very much. :)
I started using Photoshop back in 1998 with Version 5.0. Soooo long ago!! I'm by no means a master at using it - I'm still learning new things all the time. What's awesome though, is that we now have pretty much unlimited educational resources on the internet - TH-cam video tutorials, websites, blogs, forums, and just Google in general. Whenever there's something specific that I want to learn how to do, I just Google it! :)
Awesome, I "favorited" the video for later use. I like the idea of having a texture layer so you don't have to be bothered with colours bleeding in with the patch tool. I don't know if this can be useful to you, but I find also that dodging and burning works well with layer in the overlay blend mode that you simply brush in black or white with 2-5% flow for burn and dodge. Pressing D makes fore and background colours B & W and then you simply press X to switch between them. Anyway, thank you.
Sara, This tutorial is absolutely fantastic. I'm using an open-source alternative (Gimp) to do the same exact thing you just did. Thanks again for this excellent lesson.
this is the only tutorial I have watched on FS that I haven't messed up half way thru and had to reload the whole video to watch; with my dial up internet. Thank You
Best vid I've seen on the subject. I love that you went into the practical use of this technique. I learned a lot, thank you. Perfect shot of a model to demonstrate on. The only thing I think you could of done better was just mention that the pic needed to be set on 8-Bit.
This is a great video, thanks for taking the time to compile it! I've learnt that there is one imperative step that must be done at the beginning however - when duplicating the layers for colour and texture on cs5 you must do the following; select background layer>duplicate layer>rename to 'colour' layer. Ensure that this new 'colour' layer is the layer that you then 'duplicate'. If you duplicate the background twice and rename then the gaussian blur goes too far and the texture doesn't apply.
this is like the most helpful tutorial ive ever came across. all this time i was using the healing brush tool and wondering why i wasn't getting rid of blemishes the way i wanted to
Wow... I don't even have the right words! Thanks for the beautiful tutorial. I love playing around w/Photoshop w/pics I've taken of others. Unfortunately, I've never really been able to afford to buy the full version, so I download the free trials whenever a new one is available. By the time I feel like I'm finally getting the hang of a technique, my free trial runs out :( Watching your video makes me really want to go ahead and spend the money. I wish it wasn't so expensive!
This might seem random, but there is a phone app on Google Play that uses this awesome final photo as the photo for their app. The app is called "Change Hair." I don't know if you want to make some money off of the photo they stole from you, or maybe you don't mind. Either way, I couldn't help but recognize such a well done photo :) This is one of my favorite TH-cam videos and I've been using these techniques and been referring to this video for years. Thank you so much.
Nice job Sara... I've been using a different retouching method, but I'm going to convert to frequency separation, as it has a very nice natural look and very controllable.
Very natural beautiful looking skin :) Thx so much for this tutorial, ive been looking for a nice and simple way to make the skin look natural and instead of fake magazine looking skin. Keep up the good work :D
what i usually do to smoothen skin is make a copy layer, do gaussian blur until colors blend together, then make it a vector layer, and use a white brush to paint over the face on the parts that you want to smoothen, and that's it. you just make the opacity go down to an area between 30% and 50% and it makes the skin look really good, and really realistic.
thank you ... simply beautiful..i like that picture after the editing even before editing ;-) and ur voice so sweet :-) this tutorial is a best tutorial, i have ever seen about retouching ,im learning about photoshop ,thanks one more time ,this video will motivate to me to learn new things on photoshop
this def beats the pause-n-play method i was having to do on the casey carlson speed edit! thanks, and you have a very nice voice, was happy to hear it :)
You are amazingly talented and what is even more impressive, you are not using a pen tablet ... I enjoyed this video very much and want to thank you for sharing your skills with us Photoshop freaks ... Hugs to you 8)
Thanks for this video, I'll study it at home. I also had a look at your web site. Very inspiring photos! I really like what you're doing! Excellent work!
I've been looking for a airbrushing technique that doesn't look plasticy and keeps a slight skin texture for ages! I have seen this tutorial elsewhere but it was hard to follow. Thank you!!
Very impressive =) I couldn't even see half of the changes as you were making them, and yet they're obvious when you hide/show the layer.. very cool.. thanks.
Hey Sara, it's Jose. Great vid, one quick thing I wanted to tell you was in the vid at 6:19 you have the warning pop-up and say I hate when that happens, which I do as well. If you simply check the box in the lower left corner next time it comes up, it will never dare show its face on your screen again ;).
Thanks for the tut' (sent by Von Wong). I agree with everyone else, great voice, you should be on radio. This is a beautiful portrait and your touch ups are the bomb!
Great tutorial, thank you for making it! You do have a lovely voice. It makes me feel at ease when sometimes doing these PS projects gets me stressed. Thanks and please make more!! :)
Sara, thank you so much for this video. I come back to it any time I decide that I need to edit my scary skin. :) And I laugh every time I hear "I'm really bad at circling things." :D Is there anyone who takes pride in being a really good circler? Hee.
I didn't like to use this technique to retouch skin, mostly because i was doing it not properly. This is a great tutorial. Thank you so much for sharing.
Professional way of tutorial, this is so understandable not like the others. Not to mention that angelic voice its so lovely.
Agreed.
BEST Photoshop skin tutorial I've seen! Easy to understand, to the point, and you don't sound obnoxious. Your model is beautiful!
seriously your voice… It's so cute, I could listen to you talk all day
By far and away the best retouching tutorial I've seen on TH-cam with the best, most natural looking end result. You're very talented, thanks!
this is the first tutorial ever where I couldn't focus much on trick but your Voice ♥

I have been learning how to use frequency separation over the past few weeks. Your process with colors is the best.
Best Frequency separation video tutorial I have seen so far. Great job, good tutorial.
(Also like everyone else here I think that you have the best voice.)
+Summer Alder All he said is that he likes her voice?? You think strange.
This is one of my favorite tutorials on youtube! Thank god someone is not trying to explain things but rather just show how it's done! I wish I could just filter youtube tutorial videos by the labels of TIMEWASTER and NON-TIMEWASTER. Keep up the good work!

sexy voice :P nice vid :D
Será que ainda é ativa aqui no youtube?
Eu vi esse vídeo ha alguns anos, e até hoje uso essa técnica em meus vídeos
Obrigado :D

Honestly the best frequency separation tutorial and I've seen a lot. Great job!!! Thanks so much!!!
I just wanted to thank you for this... I took some photos for a friend and this tutorial just took them up another notch! You're amazing!

I saw this a week ago on F/Stoppers and it is extremely helpful and thorough. Thanks for making such a great tutorial.
The speed and accuracy with which you work is impressive. Great retouching video, Thanks.

Sara,

Thanks again for this excellent lesson.
Your tutorial is different from others because you put background music in it and I just love it!

Very nice! I love that the skin texture is there and not merely airbrushed away!
I had to do this kind of thing for my photography class, and your video was more helpful than the teacher was! Thanks so much!
I've made an action based on your steps and use it for my seniors! Thanks! Best frequency separation tut!

You. Are. GREAT! Simple to follow, and you make it delightful to watch while learning! :) Keep up the great work!

Wow... I don't even have the right words! Thanks for the beautiful tutorial. I love playing around w/Photoshop w/pics I've taken of others. Nikki Page I contacted Sara about a different app company also using this photo to advertise. She is aware of this.
