    My brother and his family bought me a set of hiking poles for Christmas. I have been using a single walking stick up till now. The hiking poles make it easier to climb with a backpack on slippery terrain.

    This is my biggest fear hiking. Getting schooled by experienced hikers on everything I'm doing wrong.

      You should want to be schooled!
      I got schooled by a couple of dudes last week and now I’m shopping for poles. Invaluable. They were nice about it. Hikers generally are ✌️

    Thank you for this video! I was provided the wrong information when buying my first hiking poles and one ended up bent after just a couple months and then after two more backpacking trips I couldn't adjust them anymore. Your video taught me that the bottom part needs to be adjusted to the maximum then the top part gets adjusted to what you need. The worker had told me to make them extended evenly when I was buying them, that's what led to them breaking I believe.

    • @windowlickerltd2
      @windowlickerltd2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mari S ...thumbs up for the worker than. That was absolutely correct. To achieve optimal strenght of the poles both sections needs to be extended evenly.

    • @mtpstv94
      @mtpstv94 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm no expert, but I do have common sense and I believe that the person told you correctly. Physics alone would say that you wouldn't want to do what is shown in this video due to that first extension being extended to its most weak point. Could be wrong, but from what I've seen up close these poles are nothing more than modified camera tripods which I've seen a lot of.

    Hard to understand why people don't know why poles are useful, but these lovely ladies are walking on flat ground, so not so much use. I use them over difficult terrain. They help on scree, boulders and other rough ground. They help to stabilize your body, help you balance and test the security of the ground etc. I have used them to test for boggy ground in front of me (Dartmoor!) and to test the stability of boulders and small rocks. We wild-camp and hike over quite difficult terrain and poles are a god-send. They have prevented injury as well by improving balance as we carry quite a lot on our backs.

    Do you always have to use a pair though?

    • @adventurelifesingapore5094
      @adventurelifesingapore5094  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The approach to use a single pole is similar to a pair. Although 4 legs is better than 3 :)

    • @stonechen2480
      @stonechen2480 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try to avoid single poles in most situations. First, if you are just hiking on flat ground, using single pole will push you to the other side, force your body to compensate, and you get an unbalanced exercise. Second, hiking on trails, using single pole will give you a false sense of security - you think you have three contact points with both of your feet, but unlike camera tripods, you don't get an equilateral triangle, instead, you'd have a trapezoid with a missing point, thus, even less balanced than without trekking poles.

    Disagree about height, but then I am a veteran x-c skier. The adjustment she recommends is for downhill skiing. Even when downhilling, I used racing-length pokes (much longer).

      It seems like you're serious when you wrote this comment. Lol. As seen on the beginning of the video, this was meant to be a tutorial since not all people would have the great outdoors on their backyard to have the convenience of just making a video on the fly.
      Not sure if they were seriously trying to act or was parodying bad acting in commercials....but hey, it was entertaining nonetheless.

      I was never a professional hiker but I used to love nature walks with just me and my pup and no equipment to have to carry around and seeing people with trekking poles confused me but I thought they were much too pro so of course I wouldn’t know what the deal was. Recently I’ve been hit with an autoimmune disorder and I lost my ability to walk without assistive devices and let me tell you, those very poles that used to annoy me saved me. Anyway, I need them for more of a medical reason otherwise I could no longer go on those beloved hikes.

    So, number 4, just carry poles around without the poles touching the ground to give your arms extra weight to carry.
    I don’t see the need for poles especially for young healthy people.
