I take this very train from Chicago to Tucson every so often in a bedroom---not a roomette. I starve myself all through Texas and when we get to San Antonio I get off and get a taxi to take me to a nice Mexican restaurant for a take out order of Enchiladas, beans, rice and 6 flour tortillas. Then we stop at a gas station for a six pack of Lone Star Beer. Then back to the bedroom where I am now in Heaven!!!! There is plenty of time to do this.

Hah, sound you can feel! Nothing like the sound of two GE DASH-9’s/GEVO’s loading / accelerating from a dead stop with a heavy manifest train behind them! Platform canopy amplifies the sound

I'm planning on finally making this trip CHI to LAX next year. I'm looking forward to some excellent motionless sleep in SAS waiting for the connection with #1.

Do any Crescent first class cars get put on the westbound Sunset Limited?

The Crescent uses a view liner baggage car, view liner sleepers, a Heritage fleet diner, and
an Amcafe, and three to four Amfleet coaches. The Sunset Limited, City of New Orleans,
Auto Train, and all Western Amtrak trains use Superliner equipment.

there is no way to go between a single level car and high level car. Although Santa Fe did have a car that had a transfer stair when it combined the Super Chief and El Capitan into one train.

Isnt there an abnormally long layover for texas eagle passengers going on to LA?

I believe it's about a 5 hour layover, so yes, it's quite long.
