Man I remember getting up in the morning to watch this on Saturday and watching yu gi oh. Battle city tournament. Was a fun childhood.

Yeah you really have to think through what Wu you're using compared to your opponent in a showdown. The Reversing Mirror simply has no benefit when being paired against the Falcon's Eye and little compared to the Gills of Hamachi, whereas the Thorn of Thunderbolt alone vs the Falcon's Eye is a good match because Raimundo has nothing to counter it.
Gigi was such a great villain; from his "French Jerk" personality to his true face.

both contenders in the showdown utilized there own elements, raimundo's wind and gigis Phytoanimation. and using there wu to outsmart the other like reversing mirror on the gills of hamachi

He needed the reversing mirror because Rai was using the Falcon's Eye which gave him a huge advantage.
he let raimundo have the gill of himachi while he had the thorn of thunderbolt. if he was smart, he would've used the electricity to shock raimundo when he was in the water.

This episode does raise a valid question why didn't the villains ever attack the heroes after the showdown ended? What was holding them to not do that?
Some because they lose anyway like the evil mermaid. But Chase Young is honourable to accept defeat than be a sore loser.
a good handful of the villains who don't have magic or martial arts would be risking a butt kicking of a life time
My guess is after the heroes win it would be a bit foolish to atk them after acquiring more Shen Gong Wu. After the heroes lost they would have what they wanted and rather than risk losing what they just won, they would take off since the heroes wouldn't do anything.
It's a little something called INTEGRITY. What you're describing is basically cheating.
The showdowns are likely exhausting to most of those who compete.

Technically he really didn't. He just reverted him back to his previous state.

Not really. The reversing mirror is a very strong shen gon wu, so it would've make sense for him to wager it so he can use it. Not to mention rai manage to kicked it off of him. If it wasn't for the fact that he lost the mirror during that scramble, he would've won.

Why does reversing mirror sometimes work like it's suppoused to based on its introduction and sometimes as a literal "no u" even on no-wu items

This was one of the most satisfying episodes of showdown. Moonstone locust is Quite the powerful shen gong wu.
