What few recognize is Victor Jory plays Judge Roy Bean. A great actor of the 20's - 40's, he made the best performance in the movie.
Love his talent, he was priceless.

Actor Victor Jory as Bean was also a well known voice actor/narrator too. I remember him best narrating MacKenna's Gold, 1969 movie with Gregory Peck, Omar Sherif and Julie Newmar.

I watched it because I saw Budd Boetticher directed , and wrote, this movie. I saw it was a "money for retirement" for Audie Murphy (he produced it). Murphy had excellent production work done, hired a first class director, cast himself (+ one relative) and Victor Jory and one other Holly Wood well-known character actor. Boetticher wrote in the "not a happy ending" type script popular in Holly Wood in thar period of time. He cast unknown actors to make it cheap. They perform well - they've been well taught. The "heavy" was not convincing but he did the script as it was. Just lacked the aura of menace needed.

Love these older movies when areas outside Old Tucson REALLY were like this!
That old West town is filmed at Old Tucson. It's about 10 miles from Tucson (at least it was when I lived there in the 1980s). It is both a type of small public amusement park and also used to film movies/TV series at. It even had/has a old time real train engine/a few rail cars with tracks that ran either on/to regular train tracks or had special rail tracks to film train scenes.

Outra coisa interessante, quem atravessa a fronteira do México para os EUA, em alguns lugares das cidades é possível ver, até mesmo pelo google earth, sepulturas em cemitérios históricos dos confrontos da época entre índios, civís e autoridades!

Embora tenha muitos comentários favoráveis ao filme, eu achei uma droga. Não entendo como se gasta tanto (toda produção cinematográfica, por mais simples que seja, demanda muitos recursos financeiros) para se produzir um filme com essa má qualidade, e com produção de Audie Murphy, que protagonizou vários filmes de faroeste.

This wasn’t the best western I ever seen and it’s not one I would watch again .
It was designed to make Audie Murphy a lot of retirement money. He cast it with unknown actors, aside from Jory, to make it cheaply. First class director Boetticher and first class production.

Great movie but what a sad ending...and what was the moral of the story, can some literary person decode it for me? Or is it just chaos and nothing more
Maybe the idea is that our choices lead us to the places we got to.. the girl did stupid things throughout the movie "couldn't find a respectable job" so she decided to be an escort girl.. ok.. then - when the crazy judge ruled that she should be married to a foreign guy she didn't say Nothing and didn't try to create her own life just drifted off with this foreign guy without knowing him at all.. Then she suddenly remembered that he was still only a child and not skilled enough she thought of protecting him but again - in the moment of truth she did not take any action so she was left alone so regarding her - she should have taken the initiative while he should have been less proactive and content with his life with her, trying to find happiness in a simple life of a farmer.

@@billsemenoff - I agree. Cowboy movies should make us think not to be un-original with the same old nuance. Its cool to find this kind of movie in my eyes this is great just cus the "suprise" in the end. finaly thr hero does not have everythink in the end just becouse he did the right thing or just cus he is the hero of the movie. plus the girl was so stupid - going what ever the guy told her to and not thinking by herself for a second so i was happy she was left alone to start and think and grow. I like happy ending but this time i like the reality being reality

@robertpage2023 Unfortunately back in the 60's things were way behind in that area. Good thing it's all changed for the good for animals since then. Lots more still to be changed and improved. Glad to have animal lovers in the CCC community! 🐶🐱🐭🐦🐴

It's all cinematic effects. NOTHING is real. No snake was killed, no horses were hurt.
