- In 1965, the Pakistani army secretly infiltrated the Kashmir Valley via the Haji Pir Pass, using proxy mujahideen. Despite its covert nature, this operation ended in a humiliating defeat for Pakistan. They named this operation "Gibraltar," a choice that carries significant meaning and reflects the mindset behind it.
The name "Gibraltar" was chosen deliberately, echoing the historical conquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Berber Muslim army through the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. For Pakistan, this historical achievement represented a symbol of Muslim triumph. By naming their 1965 operation after this significant historical event, they sought to draw a parallel and signify their own ambitions.
