- These are scenes from my great grandfather's camera from the 1940s. Max Rapp was a composer/arranger/contractor for Universal Pictures from 1935 until his passing in 1960. The footage was all shot in & around the Hollywood area during the early 1940s (except for the small clip of Yellowstone), with most of the scenes taking place at the family home. Their home sat next to the Cross on Cahuenga and provided a wonderful view of Hollywood and the surrounding area. If you're a fan of Hollywood's Golden Age then you'll love this video! You'll see the cars, décor, and more. Because it's a long clip, I've provided a brief outline to navigate through the video. The starred ones are my personal favorites and ones that highlight the era.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this amazing video! I cried through many parts of it, just remembering. I was born in Hollywood in 1938. We lived on top of the hill in Eagle Rock in a stylish old Spanish Style home with an octagonal shaped living room. I remember Christmas 1944, which was much like your family's. I remember the big cross above Cahuenga Pass, so well. It fascinated me as a child. We moved to the Burbank in 1946. My Daddy worked at CBS so that was still a short enough drive for him in our 1940 Chrysler! It was so wonderful seeing the old styles of dress, hairdos, and comportment. Oh. how I wish we lived like that today! I subscribed to your channel hoping to see more history. I've become an old lady, living in the beautiful past! 😌❤
Carol Worth I’ve become fascinated with how much the city of Hollywood has changed and the fact you’ve lived through those great eras is amazing. Could you give me a brief description of a day on Hollywood & Highland in the 1940s.. the scenery, the sounds.. Today it’s so crammed and not many people get to really appreciate the ground they walk on. Thanks so much 👍🏽
So. California use to be a beautiful place of orchards, groves, farms, and open fields that would bloom with Yellow Mustard and Sunflowers after the rains. Back then you could walk through a field and an occasional Pheasant or a family of Quail would take to the sky. I wish the major studios had filmed more of the surrounding country side throughout So Calf. before it all changed, they missed a golden opportunity. My hope is that someday some gaming studio will come out with a VR realistic looking simulation of what So Calif. use to look like back in the 20's, 30's, and 40's. Imagine being able to walk, ride a horse, or drive to any City or location the way it use to be before the developers came in and ruined it all. (If the powers that be are reading this... PLEASE... make it happen.)
Carol Worth how blessed you were with such beautiful memories , I was born in 73’ in Orange County and remember orange groves and strawberry fields and lots of open land too . I feel fortunate to have seen it before the major land grabs . I can only imagine what Los Angeles was like in the 20s-40s wow !!!!
@@golfwang-if8dc Sorry. I just saw your inquiry! As I recall, Hollywood and Highland was simply an intersection in the city. Nothing particularly compelling about it. When we took the streetcar to LA, we dressed for the city. Men wore suits and hats; women wore dresses, stockings, hats and gloves. We always wore hats and gloves. People were respectful toward one another. Men gave up their seats for women and children, always. It was an era that has gone away forever, I fear. My Uncle Ernie was the very first man hired by Bob Cobb, owner of the Brown Derby. He worked there for many years (in the "Little Hat" on Wilshire Blvd.) Later, he worked at the Hollywood and Vine location. I could go on but I've veered off topic, I fear!

Absolutely STUNNING and GREAT FILM! My wife and I watched this on a rainy Sunday evening thinking we'd watch your film for a few minutes, but we ended up just entirely SPELLBOUND! We lay there on the bed watching it on laptop, we were so moved! I cannot say Thank You enough for sharing this with everyone! You know, this is a really an important look back at a family life and seeing this really drives home how truly precious and special each and every second, moment of life can be with a family and a real special home! Dear Taylor, thank you so much for posting this. I live on the street just below this house, also under the Pilgrimage cross and got a tiny peek of my home for a split second, which is all I needed. What a treasure for all of us neighbors to see our little Dell from this time.

What a beautiful family and a great time to live in Hollywood. My parents grew up there and moved over the hill to Studio City in the early 1960s. My Dad said when they opened the Hollywood freeway it split the community in 2. It was never the same. By the 1980s most everyone stayed away from it. (except for me)haha! teenage heaven! I did a google search and saw that your grandfathers house and it still immaculately cared for. He must be keeping his eye on things from up there. Many thanks for sharing this historical memoir on youtube for all to see.
The color alone should knock everyone's socks right off! Gorgeous, simply gorgeous. I lived in L.A. in the mid-60's...and got glimpses of this life gone by as we see it here while going all over Hollywood Hills. Kudos, again...

This was just wonderful. Terrific that your family had these films all these years...and who knew there would be You Tube so they could be shared with all of us? After watching, I feel as though I have just visited the 1940s and the lovely home in the Hills near the cross that I see every day. Thank you for putting these family memories up. .

This is so wonderful. As I watched it, I knew whoever shot these films had to work in the film industry in some capacity. They’re so well done, with establishing shots, close-ups on action… it was filmed by a true storyteller who loved his medium. Thank you for sharing this treasure!
I was born in Hollywood in 1930 . It was a wonderful place to live then.
Wow!...I was born in Northridge,So.Calif in 1968....25 minutes apart from Hollywood......grew up with a big families even the big relatives ,childhood friends and neighbors in San Gabriel.....just loving it!....What a good memory!....

Mostly when it comes to the 1940s we look back at black & white films from that era, seeing color film taken back then makes the 1940s come alive and with a realisim that is more natural. Many thanks for sharing your families lives with the youtube community.

The last time I was at Forest Lawn it still resembled this. Iam glad it hasn't changed much. In 2012 it had the feeling of being in 1944.
I think it's astonishing to think that the people in this video had no idea some guy from across the world would be watching them living their lives 70+ years later. I'm a Georgian, but I'm a sucker for early Hollywood. Though most locals from there refer to me as "Southern", I'd like to point out there where I live and Los Angeles almost identical, in terms of latitude....making them just as southern as I am. On the plus side, I can say all this out loud without the drawl, and I didn't need to put in a "y'all".
I'll be in those Hollywood HIlls someday. I feel like I've already been there.

It's important that films like this get public exposure for the sake of our collective memory. I'm writing a novel about Hollywood in the 1940s (I've been to California, but never to LA) and vivid, immediate color images like this coincide exactly with my imagination. It's really helpful and also tells me I'm on the right track in what I'm writing. Thanks for sharing.

As the owner of a 1940 Plymouth, it was cool seeing all the old cars in COLOR and especially seeing the 39 Plymouth they were in in a few of the shots. Also your family seemed like a fun crowd to be around. Loved the cat in the gift box shot. Funny!
NYC1927 My Daddy was the proud owner of our beautiful 1940 Chrysler, brand new. We had that car for many years until 1947, when some "jerk" side-swiped us on a two-lane road (which, come to think, is what the roads were back then). Our next car was a gorgeous dark blue Chrysler "Town and Country" sedan. It even had the roof rack! Daddy used to refinish all the wood on it each year. Wish I still owned that car! Loved the old "Detroit Iron!" 💕👍
I was born and n 1940. I lived for awhile wirh my grandparents in Artesia,Ca. It was a wonderful time filled with wonderful neighbors.

What a Beautiful "Time Capsule" your family are very luck, and what an amazing home to live in, I'm guessing built in the late 1920's ? with its elements of Art Deco & Spanish Mission, loved the little every day details, such as the Cat asleep in the sunny Living room
Yes- it was built in 1924 by Wallace Beery. The LA Times called it the "Villa of the Villain" and did an article on it when it was built. Apparently, Rita Gilman (his wife) thought it was too far out "in the country" so they sold it.
Poor Wallace got stuck with a typical spoiled women who has to be close to her shopping & beauty parlors. That's why I'm single, I do what I want. ^^

This is a cultural anthropologists/ethnologists dream and a gift everlasting; besides the wonderful documentation of your family's personal world. One of the most exquisitely produced, not to mention charming, vintage color film collection ever. Thank you very much.
Taylor: Indeed, a copy in an archive would be absolutely wonderful. This wonderful documentation of a 'life' of many people in a family in a certain period of time and place is important in the future. As I noted...a cultural ethnologist would love it; or the history of California, to mention two. Even a major library....point is, preserving and protecting a copy would be beneficial in all respects. We should all be so extremely fortunate to have a recorded visual history of our ancestors. Treasure Time!

@Howell Wong For a time (in the 1940's, I think) Knott's Berry Farm went under the name of "Knott's Berry Place." I have a brochure/menu from back then, among my souvenirs. There was no charge for admission back then. One would go and have a wonderful chicken dinner with Boysenberry Pie for dessert, of course! Then, take a stroll around "Ghost Town" and see all the interesting memories of the Wild West! It used to be quite a long drive from the Valley (before freeways!) but we'd be good and hungry by the time we arrived! Oh, and there were plenty of parking spaces! 🥰

Ah..the good old days when Los Angeles was filled with real people, affordable housing, and great neighbors. Today? Forget it. Nothing but rich snobs who wouldn't know their neighbor if they tripped over them.
Let's not forget these films are of upper middle-class people living in the Hollywood Hills, with Cadillacs. That wasn't most of L.A. in the Forties.
Let us not forget the zoot suitors and the US Navy sailor riot in LA during WWII.

Thank you for sharing these invaluable films. 1940 IN COLOR?!?!?! Very, very rare in private hands at that time. A much more civilized time. No surveillance, no home alarms, no need for armed security (unless you were with the mob), no tearing down crosses. "Idealized" Norman Rockwell America captured as it occurred. What happened? That is not a rhetorical question. I know exactly what happened and so does anyone over 50 who is fearlessly honest. We saw it with our own eyes. Any ideas?

The terminology of this era called it a "home movie" which was shot on an 8mm or 16mm film camera, long before the "video camera" using tape or digital storage was invented.

Nice. Out of curiosity, I grew up in Encino during the 50's. I'm wondering if u folks would have any vintage footage of Ventura Blvd. circa: late 40's ,50's entering in or around that area. I'm always seeing old stuff from San Fernando Rd. or Sunland Blvd. (all the notable stops) I know it was very sparse & serene compared to the mess it is now. Thanx...

+J kK These were the days of freedom, when one didn't have to worry about whether one would be turned in, just because someone else thinks that swinging high in the swing, or a myriad of other things, is Child Abuse.
I have lived in the Midwest all my life. I would not have thought that the child was swinging too high. However high the child wanted to swing would be OK. Now in 2023 people in California do not think or even live like folks in the Midwest. ?????

It was a great time for men, going to war and dying in strange lands, rationing for everyone back home because priority number one, was supplying the troops with everything they needed. Hundreds of thousands of families without husbands, sons, fathers, brothers never coming back. Many other hundreds of thousands coming home maimed, or emotionally scarred for life.
