    I'm "this guy on Twitter" and just commenting to show my "status game dominance"
    (it does rain in Bali)

      Hey Marc. For a Twitter guy, your TH-cam channel sure has some handy tips for developers to improve their "success" status game.

    As a software engineer, will my code even compile if it wasn't written from a beach hostel in Bali?

      No, you have to give me the code and explain it to me, and I’ll do it from Bali.

    It’s no good making software if no one knows about it, that’s why you have to promote 50% of the time

    Indie hacking greatly appeals to me due to the freedom of location it offers. While I don't necessarily want to work from Bali, I'm tired of feeling shackled to the big cities in the UK for the sake of earning a substantial income. I would much prefer the tranquility of a sleepy village in the countryside over the hustle and bustle of London any day of the week.
    That said, I currently don't know much about indie hacking, so hopefully this rabbit hole doesn't lead to spending thousands on courses and resources, or getting indoctrinated into some influencer's cult. It would be nice to know there's a way out!!

    But everything we do in life ISN'T ABOUT STATUS. Like survival, love, etc. This is just one more monochromatic way you can look at things - but does it actually solve any problems you couldn't solve before?

    Indie hacking looks appealing as it offers two kinds of freedom:
    - The freedom to work from wherever you want, with Bali as an example emblameatic place
    - The freedom to develop whatever you want to develop in the way you want to develop it, not sticking to a company plan

    fwiw I once went to Bali and it rained so much the street to my accommodation flooded, meaning I had to wade in knee high water filled with literal crap just to get into town or get back home

    as someoone in bali right now - you don't need to come here to do achieve any of that. It's cool but a little bit overhyped and if your goal is to focus and develop software then you should just do that from wherever you're at. I'm 27 and the last 2 years was living in thailand, I made money online and it was a good time but I got about 10% of the work done that I could have but without coming I wouldn't know what I really want to do so it's a give and take.

      true but its about experiences, when you older you probably want to(or dont but go with it) settle down and put roots down, that experiences just keep you grounded, you have done it all and are stable to be able to raise a family etc. Experiences albeit good or bad are needed. Not saying Bali is the one but theres always a destination worth visiting to have more experiences.

    An established audience is what lets indie hackers get more than a thousand clients in the first 24 hours after launching a product. I think that’s the point of constantly posting on X

    I lived in Bali for nearly 3 years, it was fun for a time but I would never live there again. Constant traffic, pollution, corruption (which comes into your everyday life) all get you down after a while. The internet was way too slow back then for this kind of lifestyle but don't get sucked in to these kind of videos. It's far from ideal living there, although the Balinese people are great, as is the food. Just take all this stuff with a major pinch of salt.

    the reason for building in public is to build an audience, be authority which is what you are trying to do here in youtube. That's not part of indie hacking, that's just an advantage if you already have eyeballs, audience which you can launch, sell products and get instant users, response, feedback. Then don't make youtube videos eather if it is distracting you, why are you making this videos?

    • @TomGregoryTech
      @TomGregoryTech  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Connection. Also because many developers don't realise they can use skills they already have to build their own products (instead of someone else's).

    • @jermaine2712
      @jermaine2712 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The audience is static. Your logic works only if you build an audience of one particular group of people (say marketers) and you plan to create products that only ever cater to that audience (marketers).
      That won't be the case for 99.9% of indie hackers out there. It would make more sense to run ads targeting various buyer personas as needed instead of building an audience that would be irrelevant for 8/10 products you build.

    What does indie hacking mean? Is it whitehack hacking?

    • @archockencanto1645
      @archockencanto1645 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Nothing to do with hacking, apparently. Just people creating software, solo, is pretty much it.

    • @ObeseWizard
      @ObeseWizard 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think indie = independent: they are solo no boss/employees, and also independent in that they can live (mostly) wherever they want. Hacking being either 'hacking society' by being free to live/work wherever, and/or hacking just meaning they are almost all software engineers.
