These guitars are a great thing to have in any player's collection. Because of how simple they are, it really forces you to adapt the degree of attack, etc. I think it can make you a more dynamic player. I have the dirty mustard yellow DCJ, but otherwise they're the same. I will say that I find the bridge on that guitar annoying as hell to set the intonation (mine wasn't set up great when I got it), but once that was handled, I had it dialed in pretty well. If you play anything from Bad Religion to Social Distortion, this guitar is great wide open. I was amazed at the range of sounds you can get from this instrument, and I loved how it made me adapt my playing to the needs of the song but balanced against a very stripped down guitar. Great video! BTW if you order more than 1 guitar, 1 shipping charge will cover I think 2. I must admit that in hindsight, I like the single cut Jr. way better than the double.
They're around,@@scaredycat8685. I've seen videos uploaded by Minty's Comedic Arts, in which he's got a cherry-finished Strat with one pickup (I think it's a humbucker though).
I've become a huge fan of Amaranth. My wife is a bass player but her 1st guitar is a 7/8 Jackson dinky that is perfect for smaller people and the wood has a great maroon/purplish/black color, has a great grainy texture. Owning guitars and basses with rosewood, laurel, pau, black walnut and maple fretboards the Amaranth may be my favorite with the combination of feel and looks. I don't know whether it was just luck or if most amaranth boards are like hers but the feel underneath the fingertips is great. So much so that I've been picking it up more and more often. Of course as my main guitar is a 10.2 lbs LP the Dinky's weight may play a role in that too. Great video as usual.

Amaranth is a hardwood (actually harder than maple)...sometimes called purple heart, it's an excellent tonewood..the 'black stuff' on your fingertips is the residue from a dye they use on the fretboard to make it look like ebony... some of thomman adverts say the fretboard is ebony.....it's not, (naughty thomman)....lol
blackened fingertips mean you''re hands are bonding with the fretboard! over time they'll root there and the guitar will be like an unnecessary appendage!
Their fretboards I think are stained. I have 2 Harley Benton guitars that both gave me the dirty fingers, cleaning the fretboard really well with a proper cleaner solved that for me. The were both really dry as well, so I suggest after cleaning that you oil it, I use the F1 oil from Music nomad (but there are many options, that is just my personal preference).
I got this Harley Benton model Single Cut Les Paul Junior last July and it's been a great player. All I did to it was lower the action to the level I liked. Mine didn't have any flaws in the finish or anything. It was a little heavier maybe close to 8 pounds. If you want to see how a single P90 sounds turn up the volume on the guitar, without a distortion pedal. It has a overdriven tone all its own. I paid $339.00 USD for the guitar with a hard shell case and shipping and it was still about $70.00 USD less than the Epiphone model without a case and shipping.
Another great video. Informative and funny (especially you not recommending the video?? LOL!!) You crack me up, Landon. Well done! SCJ = Single Cut Junior (but you already knew that! 😂)
Lando Calrissian, would you consider doing a pedal review? Would love your take on the JHS Angry Charlie or the Electroharmonix Nano Muff or Op Amp pedals!
I have the Harley Benton DC (double cut) version and I really like it. In the UK it is tremedous value. In Canada the value is diminished a lot because of the import duty, tax and courier charges. If you get a good one (Harley benton quality control is variable - I know from experience) from Thomann Germany the guitar is on a par with the Epiphone Junior. If I was living in Canada I would not buy from Thomann because of the extra costs involved in importing. Thomann customer service for me in the UK has been good to excellent so if you did need to return one you shouldn't have too much trouble but it will take a few weeks to get a refund or replacement. I raised the unadjustable dog ear pickup height on my DC by using a 3mm spacer under the pickup cover which enables much better output. I changed the tuners to the same style (Kluson vintage style) because I wanted chrome buttons instead of the white plastic ones - also I went for locking tuners to make string changes easier. In the UK a great guitar: SC or DC (I like the DC look better) at a great value for money price.
The sc-j is a fantastic guitar even if you don't factor in the price! Needs nothing but a string change out of the box ( something I'd do even with a £2000 guitar as you don't know how long it's sat before you buy it) the pickup is fantastic and has that fat p90 single coil sound. The bridge is great and so are the tuners ( just wish they put the split shafts on instead) I'm a big fan of Wilkinson products anyway. I've had mine about 18 months and it's great and plays awesome and I love the neck shape as it's not to big but still has chunk to it. Does it have the same feel as a Gibson? Yes and no as they are very similar but the Gibson has a bit more bite from the pickup and does feel more premium just because of the finish and the fret size. I've gigged with mine and it holds its own for sure and it's light so that's definitely a bonus. Buy one as for the price you will definitely be happy! Cost very little to change out a pickup if you feel the need. Get it set up and your off and running.
usually, buying a guitar that is more expensive, you should get what you pay for, but, I bought a JS22M Rhoads, they only thing I did was putting locking tuners because on of the stock tuners broke on me. I will not start about what I had to do with my Les Paul Tribute, full setup, intonation, some fret levelling, changed the tuners to locking because, one of them broke on me (I do not expect that from a guitar over a grand... but not surprised for a guitar costing 300$), recut the nut, it was way too high AND had to shield all the electronic cavity... they was NO SHIELDING AT ALL ... so ... more expensive is not always better.
Hello. I own the same model in the same color and I love it. My experience is that it’s well put together and it was okey straight through the box. I’m a bedroom player so I will not do anything about it. Thanks 🙏 for the review.
Good honest review , i was already interested in this , in particular i am impressed that you het a mahogany body whereas the les paul branded i pickup guitar is merely poplat which is terrible tone wood
You are correct Landon. The Juniors were made as student guitars but they are freakin' badass! I have an Epiphone Les Paul Jr. that is a rock beast! Simple and an absolute blast to play. I noticed (on the Harley) the B string is off it's saddle in the close ups. Obviously it wasn't in the tone test LOL! 🐉💀👽🎸🎶🎵🧠
I rented an Epiphone ES-335 a couple years ago from L&M and had the same problem with the dirty fingers. As I recall the washers under the tuning peg nut rattled as well which was annoying. I ended up bringing it back early. As you mentioned it's part of the luck of the draw when buying these sight unseen.
Good video Landon. Now, what was the first song you were playing with the Sweet Baby and the DD-7? It is stuck in my brain but I can't put my finger on it. Keep up the good work. Your videos have just the right mix of guitar with a couple of laughs.
Also, your playing has been getting better and better. The work shows. How does having the saddles on the tail piece like that affect the action? It looks like they would necessitate having a pretty high action coupled with the dog eared p90. I'm no shredder but it looks really hard to adjust low.

they sounded very similar. HB had a thin neck and the Epi has a fat 50s style neck. I preferred the Epi neck in this case I think. th-cam.com/video/fQVRreeolAs/w-d-xo.html
I Like the shape and the sound made for rock. I prefer the black one. I've a HB Tube Amp (15w tube) and works very well! My first, and for now last esperience with Thoman was fine.
Not anymore. Epi Jr is now $429 everywhere; amazing how that works, isn't it? HB Jr is $260 shipped to the States as of today. But I find that $60 to be kind of steep given that last year it was something like $35.

Hi Landon, some action measurements would be really helpful on this one. With the non-adjustable pickup action adjustment is gonna be a bit limited. Interested in buying one before Jan on case we end up with tariffs but don't want to be stuck with something I'm not comfortable playing.
@@landonbailey Your strings won't be oxidised to that extent on a brand new guitar. My experience in the past with some low end guitars was that they stained or dyed the rosewood fingerboards for a more uniform , professional look.
@@landonbailey Environment and materials. The black stuff is literally rust (iron oxidisation) coming from nickle's exposure to the elements. Google "Guitar fret oxidization" and "guitar strings oxidisation" and you'll see people all over the internet talking about it. You'll see dozens of forum posts about oxidisation, and everyone in the replies telling them it's uncommon ;) - One guy describes it as "all this ruff stuff on a lot of the frets". Another says, "just play the guitar and the oxidation will dissappear". This is what causes scratchy volume and tone pots, too, and you should know that when I just googled "scratchy tone pots", your video about fixing scratchy pots was the first result. So, it would seem you already understand the issue on a fundamental basis, just not how it applied here. It was likely the oils from the hands that installed the strings, played them for a few seconds etc. Then the hands that handled the guitar for packaging, etc. Just a bit of contact with human skill will rush oxidisation. You can play a guitar, put it away for two weeks and come back to crunchy, scratchy frets and strings that blacken your fingers. Actually, body chemistry plays a HUGE role in the way your oils effect your guitar. Look into it, it's fascinating. This is also why some string companies sell coated strings. To extend their lifespan. The cheaper the string, the more prone to oxidisation. The longer it's exposed to air, the more likely it is to oxidise. This is why some Squiers or Epi's come with scratchy, unpolished looking frets on brand new guitars.
So I’ve been meaning to comment for a bit. I think you’re a cool dude Landon. I know you’re a Telecaster guy, I’m more of a Les Paul guy personally but that’s definitely my second choice. Strat is third. Anyway I’ve been on this HB trip lately. I just ordered this very one you’re talking about. This will be my fourth. Anyway great vid. All your vids are. WE’LL DO IT LIVE! This $&@&ing thing sucks! Do it live!!! Ha ha brilliant
Yeah, I know I am commenting on a 3+ year old video, but that pickup is a neck pickup according to the Roswell site. Is this an error, or is that what HB is putting in their Juniors?
Hi Landon! Great review! Is the guitar well balanced when you play standing? I want to buy one but I'm afraid it has that "heavier neck" problem I've encountered once with a cheap sg. Thanks!
I think of them as a road with no speed limits or stop signs....straight shot from the string to the amp....more wood, less plastic and wire....I can see the attraction to it....plenty of jazz boxes have one pickup at the neck
Yes, another reviewer mentioned that they stain/dye the fretboard to make it darker looking, more like a rosewood or maybe an ebony. He used Murphy’s wood soap to clean it and it wasn’t an issue after that. Sweet guitar though!

Is the neck slimmer than the thick 50's neck? I hope so. I am awhere that they make a FAT version but If I get a regular one will the neck be thinner?
I think this one was slimmmer
Thanks for the reply. I am getting ready to order one soon.@@landonbailey
Hb has stepped up their game, nice guitars. Unless you order 2 or 3 guitars the shipping puts the Hb close to the price range of the €pi jr.
Not anymore. Epi Jr is now $429 everywhere; amazing how that works, isn't it? HB Jr is $260 shipped to the States as of today. But I find that $60 to be kind of steep given that last year it was something like $35.
@@Tyrannocaster times change, pricing changes, LP Jr is now $569 Canadian. Since this COVID scapegoat market manipulation, a Gibson Studio which was $899 Canadian 3 yrs ago is now $1999 Canadian. Hb still a good deal!
@@Tyrannocaster I picked up an old headstock style Epi Jr with Dimarzio bucker & a kill switch for a cool $100 Canadian, smashing deal & plays like a charm!
@@dragan4658 No kidding! I agree that it is still a decent deal - in fact, I have one arriving Wednesday, LOL. I just hope I don't get one of the occasional lemons that I've read about, because then you have a real nightmare on your hands.
@@dragan4658 Everybody should be so lucky!
I came for the peel. Stayed for the guitar.
🤣
I bought an HB Amarok (nice guitar but the datails are not that great, and is not that cheap) my fingers were black untill I changed the strings and cleaned the freatboard
Fretboard dyed to make it look more uniform ,as on a more expensive instrument.
Hi Landon, some action measurements would be really helpful on this one. With the non-adjustable pickup action adjustment is gonna be a bit limited. Interested in buying one before Jan on case we end up with tariffs but don't want to be stuck with something I'm not comfortable playing.
I think you can convert dogear to soap bar. That will give you some adjustment.
well this is a great timing
One string was not sitting in saddle slot?
ya probably after taking the strings off :)
The "black" on your fingers is oxidisation of the strings. How do you not know this?
Because I don’t know everything like some people? :) what causes that on some guitars and not all?
Almost ordered one of these. Was afraid to order from so far away, in case there was a problem.
they have a very good customer service. I am a customer there also.
That kind of looks like a Schaller bridge, but one of those nearly cost as much as that whole guitar.
Superior Court Justice!
Can play some Texas blues in your demos. Thanks
If you haven't already tried it, Landon, ut would be great if you did a collaboration with Darrell Braun when the pandemic lapses.
I want a TV yellow version!
Is it stain ? Not quite dry. I have 16 guitars of various price points and no dirty fingers. Maybe just lucky.
That's been my experience with unsealed rosewood in the cheaper end .
Can it fit a Humbucker?
if the humbucker matches those dimensions then Yes!
Ok. That is not bad. The weight is much better. The sound is really good.
This pickup sounded quite a bit more trebly than what I expect from a P90, I would say closer to a tele bridge pickup?
500k pots and alnico 5 is also bright, the Stratosonic uses the 250 pots
So I’ve been meaning to comment for a bit. I think you’re a cool dude Landon. I know you’re a Telecaster guy, I’m more of a Les Paul guy personally but that’s definitely my second choice. Strat is third. Anyway I’ve been on this HB trip lately. I just ordered this very one you’re talking about. This will be my fourth. Anyway great vid. All your vids are.
WE’LL DO IT LIVE! This $&@&ing thing sucks! Do it live!!! Ha ha brilliant
nice! cheers 👍🎸
Ok, first time I heard you strum that Lucy in the Sky riff I didn't know if it was intentional. Now I know.
It sounds nice!
I would buy it if theres is a TV Yellow or Wine Red color of this guitar.
Ya but is this better then the Epiphone les Paul jr or the TV yellow with 2 P-90’s. Both he’s covered
SCJ - Sandwich Club January
Congrats on peeling off the plastic in one go!
Thank you! Cheers!
Yeah, I know I am commenting on a 3+ year old video, but that pickup is a neck pickup according to the Roswell site. Is this an error, or is that what HB is putting in their Juniors?
3:20 your best joke in years and you call it lame! so disappointing... lol
Thought I was tuning in for a Scented Candle Jubilee, but this was ok I guess...
Yeah all the Les Paul juniors and SG juniors were student models
i have 4 2 tele type and 2 lp type love them for the money
Can you review the DC Junior version please :) if you can
Hi Landon! Great review! Is the guitar well balanced when you play standing? I want to buy one but I'm afraid it has that "heavier neck" problem I've encountered once with a cheap sg. Thanks!
ya it was fine
@@landonbailey OK cool! HB owes you one haha👍
Yes.
I don’t get the appeal of having just one pickup, but if it sounds good then it sounds good. I’d rather have just the neck pickup instead
I think of them as a road with no speed limits or stop signs....straight shot from the string to the amp....more wood, less plastic and wire....I can see the attraction to it....plenty of jazz boxes have one pickup at the neck
Then, you need to plug in to Paul Stafford Cook. He recently grabbed up a classic Les Paul Jr and easily brings out the best in it. So dies Mike Burn.
All 10 of my HB's came with dirty strings just like that.
this one was the dirtiest I've ever experienced!
My guess, fretboard stain. Nice going Landon!
Yes, another reviewer mentioned that they stain/dye the fretboard to make it darker looking, more like a rosewood or maybe an ebony. He used Murphy’s wood soap to clean it and it wasn’t an issue after that. Sweet guitar though!
SINGLE CUT JUNIOR
Single cut junior
SCJ…..Single Cut Junior. Dad….stop calling me junior! O.K…..sorry Indy.🎸😞
What are your thoughts when comparing a HB vs an Epiphone or Squier? I feel like these Asian built guitars are a bit finer than the brands are.
