Nice video. I have a venustus and he has the gold color and blue face. Mine seems pretty easy going but seems sort of like an Oscar the way he always begs for food. I used to have an OB peacock cichlid that used to chase him around but I gave him to the fish shop.
Hi Charmer. Awesome fish and thanks for the great info. Update on my lighting, it’s going well and zero algae. The boys are happy. I have my 2nd tank running now and I have 4 peas in there now. I’ll add 4 more to that tank when my LFS gets their order this coming week. I was not a fan of albino fish. But I did bring one home yesterday. Light strawberry albino peacock. Now that he’s in my tank and under better lighting, then a fish store. He looks great. One thing I did learn over the years is, fish will look different in your home tanks. Then they will under bright fish store lights. I am really considering a 120gal to replace my 2 - 66gal tanks. I’m stewing on it hard lol.
Who doesn’t love getting new fish! That’s great. My lfs doesn’t carry much that I want. My albino has a hard time finding food. I guess they have poor eyesight, so watch him. If he gets a sunken belly, it might not be parasites. It could be starvation. The 120 would be very exciting!!
I’m not 100% positive. The sand I bought at Petco I can’t seem to find anymore. They still have CaribSea but the granules are a bit smaller. I’m guessing mine were maybe slightly larger than 2mm or maybe right at 2mm. The wavemakers can blow it around but if I have everything just right it’s fine.
im uisng java ferns and some anubias in the tank, the tank is heavily stocked and no issues only plants that have been eaten is the busephalandra but i actually think that was the pleco who ate them
They sometimes just have an itch or two, and that’s all that was. In one of my more recent videos, he isn’t doing so well though. Thank you for asking!
What was the growth rate of the venustus? I've been itching for one in the 75 gallon lol. But I'd like to get one at 3 inch and let him grow until it's time to upgrade in November. You think he'll get bigger than 6 inches by then?
I would think he would grow a bit beyond 6 inches by then. I’ve had mine since he was about two-three inches, and it’s been about a year. Now he’s about 7 I would guess
@@CichlidCharmer ok bad news lol. I ended up getting a venustus at 2.5 inches unsexed. I'll let the fish grow out a little bit for determining sex (pray I have a male). Should have enough time until end of year for the bigger tank. It only cost me $13 from snake river plus I got a iceberg blue fryeri due to snake river giving me credit towards a older purchase. They sent me a female sulfur head instead of guarantee male. So with the credit I got the unsexed venustus and fryeri.
Just starting to get the blue show on my guy. Greediest fish in the tank. He doesn’t bother anyone. Just constantly watches me to see if I get up off the sofa and head his way. He LIVES for a meal. Any meal. He just. Wants. A. Meal 😂
Mbuna are typically more aggressive. I’m sure it can be done, but I’m under enough stress with my boys as it is. I’d rather just have an mbuna only tank or a peacock/ hap tank. Kinda wish I’d just done haps only actually
@@CichlidCharmer same. I’ve had mine 3 years but they are kind of boring. And there’s a female in there somewhere. The blue ones killed off the labs and made babies in their place
@@IamElijahHarvey Sounds about right. Gary wasn't that cool until just recently. Now he's kind of fun to watch. When I try to hand-feed Furc II his Monster Pellets, Gary will jump part way out of the water to get them before Furc does. He's a cool guy.
It can, but I wouldn’t want anything less than 6 feet for a fish almost a foot long. I know there are lots of people who would disagree with me. Thanks for watching!

Wow that’s a lot of these guys. Are they juvies, because they get HUGE. Thanks for watching and enjoy those fish!
I Bought Them as Juvies But My 4 Male's are about 7 inches and My 2 Female's are about 4 To 5 Inches.

One of the first African cichlid or any cichlid I ever got was a little 2 inch venustus now hes beautiful and about 10 inches 3 years later
Cool story - does he have the giraffe pattern?
@@CichlidCharmer yes he does
Bought a group of these last year. Haven't been able to breed them yet, but they look great!
That’ll be something if you can breed them!
I was both stunned and amazed! I never knew Africans stayed still long enough to ambush anything.
I actually laughed out loud when I read your comment. It’s so true! 😆
It was a comprehensive guide. I look forward to some similar videos on your south Americans.
Obliquidens was my favorite African cichlid too. Frontosa was prob a close 2nd.
