to be honest lanternfish have a pretty dope strategy, their main hunters can't get them in the deep sea, turtles, rays, dolphins and swordfish all feeding frenzy them as soon as they come out of the deep water in daytime, as they do to breed but there are so many of them in a school there is no shot of sneaking up on them, they are so small its almost not worth going after one at a time, definitely not for most larger predators, rays hoover up most of their eggs when they broadcast spawn
they are bioluminescent so when their schools swim above you they look like light is shining through like extreme countershading and from above they have black scales so you need to be basically side on to these things to see them, and one or two seeing you will ensure they all scatter
the lowest amount of eggs a lanternfish lays is about 100 in some species, other species release 2000 at a time, each. and this is awesome because a lot of their warm water species spawn year round... they are about as K selected as a species can get, half of the oceans' larvae is just lanternfish, which makes sense I guess if they are also 65% of all of the fish biomass

Thank you so much for this video and the sponsor, I didn't know about this stream platform and i had to get it cause its really amazing the number of cool documentaries it has. And by the way, whales are also a huge contribute to carbon dioxide capture but not a lot of people know or do any effort to help the ocean and their creatures.
    Keep doing good content

So, I was was supposed to be watching a lecture for my college class (head and neck surgery). Instead I'm watching a lecture on deep sea fish. I don't know how my new knowledge on marine biology is going to help trough my med school test, but I don't really care
Also, congrats on your first sponsor! You deserved it! I'm sure you are getting many more from here on, your content is great

In my local zoo they have a pitch black lanternfish aquarium and I'm still unsure if it isn't just a black cloth with blinking lights behind a glass panel with peeking holes.

I have recently became obsesaed with the deep sea (Bathyplegic onwards as Mesoplegic just doesnt *feel* like deep sea, y'know?), especially the fish (and life in general) down there. I somehow missed the fact that most fish are in the deep sea! Glad you made this fact more well known to others, lol.

This is amazing, I wonder if its because the bottom is more safe
Yes, there less food but in surface the small fishes like anchovy always get hunted by large predators in large sizes
While animals whic hunt %90 of the anchovy in surface, like whales, cant go to that deep.
This even might be the answer for why lantern fish go to feeding in night, they basically adapt to avoid large predators, and their population can grow in amazing sizes, because they dont have a predator that hunt them effective as the whales
While unlike other deep sea fishes they get biomass from the surface level, so they also can survive in deep part even thought there not enought biomass for them to feed on.

Just a small correction - there are 246 (known) species of lanternfish, not just 1. There are even 33 genera of them (the taxonomic level above species). To put that in perspective, "lanternfish" is on the same level as "canines" (foxes, wolves, coyotes, etc.), though there are only 34 species of canine.
The reason lanternfish and their bathypelagic neighbors add up to only 2% of known species is 1. because there are 228,450 known species in the ocean, and 2. because the little buggers are hard to catch so we probably only know 10% of bathypelagic species.
And that last bit is also noteworthy - lanternfish are EXTREMELY good at avoiding nets. Their lateral line system is so well developed that they can detect nets hundreds of feet away, and their bioluminescence lets them warn each other that it's coming.
All we know about are the ones that got caught.

Point of fact: Submarines will very rarely use active sonar (make a ping and listen for response), they prefer to just listen to the environment.

I think myctophum punctatum (spotted lanternfish) is just one of the many species of lanternfish. I think the statistics you were showing constitutes all species of lanternfish (family myctophidae) together, not just the spotted lanternfish, which lived only in the northern hemisphere of the atlantic ocean
