Yes. I like how you both point out the notion that our wing fixation is related to our history and socialization, and that the work is needed in the other wing for development of the core type. This is something, anecdotally, I've noticed with those of us with a strong attachment/fixation with a wing (speaking as a 4w5) that fixation comes about from not being able to draw upon both wings when the core's problem solving doesn't work. For example, my attempts to draw on my 3 were consistently resisted and even punished as a child, leaving the disengaged/stealth mode of 5s my only reliable secondary strategy. Now, pursuing 3 is a path of abject fear, even if it's clearly where I need to grow.

What a great talk! Especially loved the part about arrows and how the "bad" one isn't always "bad", I wouldn't have got into the enneagram if I didn't "disintegrate" to 5 during the pandemic! And that part about the harsh truths, I had one such moment watching Beatrice's panels on each of the types, one of the 8s casually mentioned something like "why would anyone even talk to me if I'm not the boss" and boy that really hit me hard.

A missing piece for me is how these types interact with personality disorders. Interesting that you were talking about 3's because my ex husband was both a 3 (determined by a Phd specialist) and also a Sociopath (diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder by another Phd). I'm a 2 so you can imagine it did not turn out well for me or our 4 and 6 sons. I'm curious how accurate the enneagram can be when a person doesn't have "normal" levels of empathy, responsibility, honesty and self awareness. I so related to the discussion about 2's ~36mins. Surprised me when you said everyone wants to be a 2 because when I read about 2 the first time over 20 years ago I didn't like it at all, and kept retesting trying to get a different result!

Fantastic question and fantastic answer about the "ick factor", or how to gently guide ppl through blind spots. It's a good news bad news good news story-- real liberation. What are we running toward? What are we running from?

I was sure "Mary" was a Three. When I read Beatrice's exposition of the Two subtypes , it was obvious "Mary" was a Social Two with a Three wing.
You haven't really learned the Enneagram until you have studied the 27 subtypes. "The Complete Enneagram" is a great book.

Hi Dr Lahue, I am a Christian and I understand you are a pastor. Im hearing a lot of stuff on how enneagrams came from demons and the occult. Yet a lot of Christian leaders are advocating this test... Especially Ichazo and Naranjo wrote the 9 types by connecting with a demon and auto writing. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @twlahue

I have a video on TH-cam asking if the Enneagram is evil. The Enneagram tells us the same things the Bible tells us with different words. I think it is fundamentally Christian although many people find help and value in it.
