BUZZ LIGHTYEAR - Full RESTORATION of this Toy Story Action Figure

- This Toy Story Buzz Lightyear action figure was given to me along with a challenge to restore and repair him back to his former glory. I’m not entirely certain of this Buzz’s back story but I believe a pair of brothers decided to customise him a bit with marker pens! Then the older brother set to work with a screwdriver and it was at this point that mum intervened and saved Buzz from a grisly end. Whichever way you look at it, he’s not in a good way and has one arm completely missing and a few other missing/broken parts. Thus Buzz was in need of a full restoration and one or two repairs.
First job was to disassemble Buzz. There were far more pieces than I had anticipated and I gave up keeping track of where everything went pretty early on in the project! I figured I would be able to work it out at the end.
Once stripped down, I set about removing the old paint and clear coat. Several days of rubbing down, polishing, painting and making new stickers and Buzz was ready to be put back together. However, it was actually two months between me taking Buzz apart and getting to the point of reassembling him due to me pausing this project to work on something else. It was definitely a challenge trying to remember how everything fitted together after all that time!
Anyway, I think I managed to give Buzz a second chance at saving the universe - what do you think?

This was supposed to be a quick project but it ended up taking days! I would not recommend repeating it - you can buy a new Buzz for about £30 and I spent more than that on paint and spare parts! 😂
but at least you got our respect bro.
Thank you, much appreciated! 👍
Just in the process of fixing a Buzz myself. You did an amazing job. Super cool that you shared it too.
Thank you! Best of luck with your Buzz repair 👍
Very nice! He looks nicer than ever!
Thank you! 👌
Sid really went to town on poor Buzz
I was informed that it was a pair of siblings who inflicted the damage on Buzz so it looks like Sid has a brother! 😂
@@DistinctlyAverageRepairs 😄🤣🤣🤣
The worrying thing is how did the Speak and Spell got back in the house and hide in the cupboard 😂 Brilliant video, I wouldn't have the patience for a complete respray.
😂 I wondered who would spot it first! Thanks for watching! 👍
Buzz was such an interesting toy to me
I have a used original thinkway buzz lightyear and it need a new part that makes the wings pop out so thanks for making that video
Cool - thanks for watching! 👍
Awesome job! It looks amazing!
Thank you! 👍
Fantastic job as always man. Your attention to detail and patience is out of this world. I would have burned my house down 20 times over before finishing a project like this 😅
Thank you! This one tested my patience several times - stripping the old paint & clear coat off took an age, I wouldn’t want to do that again! 😂
@DistinctlyAverageRepairs at least now you know 😂
Seeing Buzz fully functional certainly put a smile on my face. I don't even want to begin to imagine the amount of hours it took to get this accomplished.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video, thank you for watching. It took days to complete - much longer than I originally expected! 😂
el buzz de mi equipo:
It feels so strange seeing an old Buzz Lightyear figure with the new stickers… But they do look good on him, though. :)
Thank you, he looks much smarter now I think (even if I do say so myself!) 😎
Missed opportunity though: No “DANGER!” “JET EXHAUST” on the jetpack. Oh well. :)
Very nice,good job👏
Thank you! 🙏
I saw the thumbnail and my first thought was "You see the hat? I am Mrs. Nesbitt!!"
I missed a trick there - I should’ve given Buzz a little hat! 😂
Repairman from Toy Story 2 back at it again with the restoration 🔥
No, but seriously.. Toy Story is my favorite movie series of all time and seeing this is just awesome. 👏🏽
Thank you, I’m pleased you enjoyed watching me save Buzz! 😀👍
Well done
Thank you! 😃
Distinctly Average Repairs, aka The Toy Rescuer has succeeded again!
😂 Thank you. I never intended to become the Toy Rescuer - I will try and fix/restore some other items this year as well! 😂
That buzz is from the disney store in 2001 it was made for a toy story toy line called toy story and beyond that was made in 2000 and ended in 2008 and he worths 50$ now today
Ah, thank you for the information - that makes sense because he has ‘Disney/Pixar’ written on the reverse. If I sold him for $50, I would still lose money on what he cost to restore. I’m not sure Buzz was a very good investment for me! 😂
As a huge buzz Lightyear collector I definitely think it was worth restoring. These are pretty uncommon
Thank you, I appreciate the support 👍
Where do you order the spare parts for the wing pop out?
I actually bought a second broken Buzz (with different problems!) from eBay to source the spare parts I needed. There were also people selling just the wing mechanisms that they had 3D printed but they wanted as much for these parts as I bought an entire Buzz for! You can also find the 3D print files on Thingiverse if you have access to a 3D printer?
"Hey howdy hey it's like I'm fresh out of the box!"
😂👍
Awesome restoration, but why is there a Speak & Spell in the kitchen cupboard lol? 9:14
Isn’t that where everyone keeps their Speak & Spell? 😂 It’s from one of my previous videos - the Speak & Spell was ‘disposed of’ at the end of the video so it was a bit of fun to sneak it into this restoration! 😀👍
@DistinctlyAverageRepairs oh lol 💀
21:36 you can also add colors on the hands like green on hands and purple dots on the fingers
Yes, the newer version of this figure did have coloured hands but this one was originally all white so I kept it that way. Thanks for watching.👍
You’re welcome I just thought that you might want colors on your buzz’s hands you did add like new stickers 😀😀😀
I did think about it but it ended up being so much work I was just pleased to get him back to how he was! 😂
You did made The details on his Jetpack
I was hoping you would have a fix for broken wing pop mechanism. That plastic just breaks after a while. There should be 3d prints for when they break.
Of course! 😀 The wings work perfectly again now. As you say, the plastic isn’t really strong enough for the spring and over time, it weakens and snaps. It’s very common on these figures. I had a spare but you can get the 3D print file from Thingiverse: www.thingiverse.com/thing:3469986 Also, they are usually for sale on eBay. 👍
@DistinctlyAverageRepairs thanks, I think I may have to get one
i can tell you with that many parts
for a mac geyver trick for restorators typical you take pictures of it while disassembly it so its easier to put back together correctly
I do sometimes take photos but of course, I also have the video footage that I can review. For this project, I didn’t bother with photos until it was all in pieces. Then I took photos of each part just to make sure I painted it correctly. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.

I had to go back and watch the video to see what you were referring to 😂 Yes, those pads are awesome for plastic restoration!
What app did you use for the new stickers? I noticed how you used a tablet so I’m curious
It’s an iPad app called Procreate - really good for drawing/illustration etc and very easy to use, especially with the Apple Pencil. There is also a second app called Procreate Dreams which I use for animation - for example, getting Buzz to blink at the end of the video. Thanks for watching. 👍
@ I just looked it up and man it’s pricey for those apps, hopefully I’ll find some free apps that work well
I guess it depends how much you are going to use the software. I paid £10/$10 for Procreate although I think it’s slightly more expensive now and Procreate Dreams was £20/$20. But these are one-off costs - compare to, say, Photoshop which costs more than that per month and they are a bargain.
@ I have ibis paint x, (been using it for doodling since I got it years ago) not super tech savvy but still trying to learn, I’ll be watching some videos on it
That’s the best way to learn - watch someone else do it and then just have a go yourself. There’s so much great material online for free too. 👍
“He’s for display purposes only!”
Absolutely! We’ve seen what happens when you leave children in charge of Buzz and I’m not risking that again! 😂
Just like the scene when Woody was repaired
Could you do optimus prime next?
Maybe - depends what I find on eBay etc! 😂 I did repair a broken Bumblebee RC car last month so there’s a video of that on the channel. 👍
@DistinctlyAverageRepairs i saw it
Too infinity and beyond
Gahdayum
Second comment! Second comment! I did come second!
Haha, I think this counts as the first comment - the actual first one was me! 😂
What about my buzz the karate chop action does not work
Sorry, I don't know - my Buzz doesn't have the karate chop action, I think it's on the newer models. I would guess it will be a simple, broken part like the wing mechanism? 🤷🏻♂️🤞
I have same one but its complete & mine doesn't have head that moves its 95 official one. My 95 has loose laser forearm but i still like it. Edit.
I guess the plastic ball connectors can wear over time causing the joints to go a bit slack. Still a great figure though 👍
Mine is still in good shape.
The wings are broke but I found way fix them. Take the hasbro buzz wings & tape them onto the 95 boom done! Edit.
The wings seem to be the weakest point of this design - most of the ones for sale on eBay appear to have a broken wing mechanism. Nice inventive fix though 👍
It was test concept I thought came up.
Not inventive fix. There's smaller ver. Of this one came around same time as the bigger scale. The smaller ver. Has wingspan accurate to the movie but you can't retract it you can take them off & on plug em in. I thought getting one since I have the big scale but I have no room for it & other buzzs n figures share same space on my dresser. Edit.
