There are comments saying your explanation is a nightmare, or over-explaining, or complicating the process; however, these are people who already know how to do the math. Your videos are for people who DON’T know the math. I find them helpful and fast forward past information I’ve learned already from previous videos. Thanks for putting these out. I’ve learned a lot.

both subtraction problems in parenthesis first, then multiply those two, then subtract the -1.. 4-6=-2 and 6-4=2 -2x2=-4 -4-1=-5.. the answer is -5.. or C!!

This math teacher is doing a fabulous job. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, but I am 74 years old. I have forgotten much of this. The repetition is very helpful.

I had this math going to vocational college. I had a math teacher who help me out a lot with math.
24-16-36+24-1=-5 FOIL method.
-2•+2-1=-5 GRADE school method. Method preferred by those who couldn't get Algebra.
You FOILed my desire to be the first one to go there. I think we learned FOIL to make it possible to work with variables, not integers.
Why go the long way around a simple problem!?
I was always good at algebra, but that is way too involved for this. It took (4-2)+1 seconds to do it visually. FOIL comes into its own when you have two variables.
@@paulfrost8952Because it works when you have variables. Or when you have the answer and need to back track to make sure it is the correct answer. Such as (4-6)(6-n)-1= -5. That is the magic of ALGEBRA and being able to check for accuracy without the aid of a calculator.
I'd like to XPress My Answer is -5. :) Technically, there is no such thing as subtraction, only addition of a negative number. And division is but the multiplication of the reciprocal value you are dividing by. Also, back in my day, if someone handed you an equation like 5*4 / 3+1-2, you would hand them it back and tell them to format it correctly.

Most of the time, explanation given to solve such simple problems would be mind boggling as if it is rocket science. Make it simple and crisp.

I love the videos. They take me back many years ago 😅 but agree with those that ask for more simplicity. They would be more enjoyable and easier to understand if you go straight to the point: order of operations and then solve it 👍🏼

I am a literary type but when I follow your problems my mind clears up and I feel a lot of satisfaction. Has anyone measured the brain waves of people listening to a favorite symphony or watching one of your math lessons :)? it would be interesting to see how the synchrony of different parts of the brain gain coherence with different types of experiences.
I used to be a solely literary and art person, but since learning maths I have come to appreciate the perfection of maths, and how calming it is when you understand it.
When I was young this was simple but somewhere along the way they changed the rules. Simply stated, math is very precise so expressions need to be precise. Instead of P.E.M.D.A.S it should be (P).(E).(M.D).(A.S) or something similar to clarify order of operation.

Math was a necessary evil for me back in my days...I understand its need in life ...but it still ......no one(i. Think) uses this type of problem solving for every day work....do they?

For some reason the channel is obsessed with the abomination known as PEMDAS. When it comes down to an expression as simple as this he doesn't know what to do.

First, rude. Obviously a keyboard bully. Second, he gives kudos and dies not talk down but simplifies his explanation. This way even a person who dies not get it as fast can understand.
PEDMAS order of operations says do the parenthesis first.
(4 - 6 ) = -2
(6 - 4 ) = 2
Multiication and Division come next:
-2 × 2 = -4
Next comes addition and subtraction:
-4 - 1= -5
Mathematics says evaluate the expressions within parentheses first. Any other way lies madness.
This maybe why school children are having a difficult time learning math.
KIST keep it simple teacher... Smart guy certainly a fine instructor but could help my Grand - kids do High School math the way "modern" text books are written. Maybe grade school math instruction isn't up to par but last few years average math test results are heading down.

Order of operations
Solve what is inside parenthesis first
Then multiplication of those product
Finally addition and subtraction
= -5
Brackets mean multiply.
(4-6) represents scale e.g.
- 7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1, 0 + 1, +2 + 3, +4, +5, +6......
So + 4 -6, count backwards = -2
-2 x (6-4) = -4
-4 -1 = -5
The problem with basic math is that everyone forgets the rules that you learn from elementary and secondary,for which I believe should be added to every test and it's not cheating,some people have photographic memories while others learn by repeating. Order of operation is forgotten for some,just a suggestion to either right it on the chalkboard or on the test paper
If you insert an = at the end of the equation, the answer would be -5.
You lean this in basic math or Pre-Algebra It a lot of schools it is a requirement to pass Algebra 2. To graduate from High School This is a state requirement.
When I was in high school (60 years ago), we always had parenthesis and exponents. I never had any problem then, but without parenthesis and exponents, your PEMDAS explanations definitely helped me since.
If you need to use PEMDAS, the expression was written poorly in the first place. Math is math, and English is English, and never the twain shall meet. Only 17% of the world's population knows any of the English words that give us the expansion of PEMDAS.

Do brackets first, followed by multiplication and division and finally addition and subtraction- so (4-6) (6-4) - 1 = (-2) (2) -1= -4-1=-5
I'm not sure why this is in my feed. But,from the first grade up until I was sophomore I was in special education math. Then I passed the proficiency test and got thrown into prealgebra and it was so frustrating for me to the point of tears.

I've always got confused when adding and subtracting negative and positive numbers. But after watching the rest of the video, I understood what I did wrong and I understood why the answer was -5, so kudos to me! 💯💯
Working with positive and negative numbers has always been my biggest problem. This video has been great in showing me where I went wrong in my thinking process. I was good up to -4 - 1 = -3, and that was when I started to make math mistakes. You make great videos. Thank you!👍🏽👍🏽
The answer is -3 recheck your problem if 4_6 is 2,,and 6_4 is 2,(subtraction) then 4_ 1 is -3 subtraction

-5, that is my answer, probably wrong. -2 x +2 -1...- x + is a minus so -4 then -1 =-5.

It is simple equation it doesn't require much explanation as you told
_5 is the correct answer. First subtract both thenos. in the bracket we will get(_2). (_+2) _1= _4_1=add weget=_5

That wasn't the way I was taught. (4-6)(6-4)= 4(6-4) - 6(6-4) = 8 - 12 and the extra -1 = -5. That thing where you changed all the signs yuck.

Totally besides the intent of the vid, you went into dollars examples. I think a lesson on compound interest, for assets vs. debt would be nice. Would still be plain high school math.
If PEMDAS was any good as a rule it wouldn't take so long for you to explain this simple problem. The order of operations for thIs problem is actually PSPSMS.That's why it's so confusing to some people. In this case the parentheses are quite sufficient without invoking PEMDAS

In the 70s , we never heard of PEMDAS and just did our algebraic equations left to right anyway. How long has this been around John?
I graduated in 1977 and I don’t ever remember hearing of PEMDAS! I was beginning to wonder if I had slept through all those classes and I LOVED math. Thank you for your post.
Multiplication having higher precedence than addition has been the way mathematical notation works for a few centuries now.
Acronyms like PEMDAS seem to have been around for 100 years ish, maybe a bit longer.
Actually teaching these rules in the context of simple arithmetic was more patchy in the past than it is now though. Some people who learned in the 70s or earlier were taught this, but certainly not everybody.
It doesn't really matter for this question though, because reading it left to right gets the correct answer anyway.

There are many school kids too that are using this and people that never understood when they were at school but needing later on because of uni.
I’m here because I want to understand modern ways as sometimes I struggle to help my kids at school, but also I like to keep my mind going either way maths.

There are two ways this can be done: 1) (4-6)(6-4)-1 = (-2)(2)-1 = -4-1=-5 or If you want to do it as if it were a quadratic equation: 2) (4-6)(6-4) - 1 = 24-36-16+24-1= -5. Either way, I'm utterly amazed that this very simple arithmetic (involving parenthesis) attracts so many views; is numeracy that bad world wide? And it warrants a 22 minute video 😳
I think this type of math was created to exercise the brain because I have been out of school for years and have not needed this for anything in life😂

I was so keyed in on process and being used to having variables that I went all FOIL method and forgot to just work the numbers. 🤣 At least I still got the right answer.
Both are valid methods. They both work.
