- This is a perfect capsule of early 70s British TV from the Brian Clemens series Thriller.
A "sophisticated" chat up scene with a hint of darkness.
Mark Walker (Michael Jayston), a serial killer, meets the beautiful Stella McKenzie (Helen Mirren) at a health resort, and vows privately to give up his life of marrying and then murdering rich older women for their money.
Helen is always so classy. She has such poise.
Micheal Jayston is a great actor.
I saw this episode back in the day, and it's a classic. Dearly love to find it all again. But I do remember that Stella has a lot more going on than she initially reveals and has some scary surprises in store for serial playboy Mark as the story unfolds. Let's just say that this is one bird that Mark will later wish he never should of tried to chat up in the first place.
+Nick Dellow Thanks Nick, but I see now that whole episode, along with some other classic ones from that series, such as 'Someone at the top of the stairs' is now here on TH-cam, so I'll enjoy watching those later this evening. Cheers, Dave F. ( An Aussie/British expat in Indonesia.)
+Jakartaman I have just watched this episode once again and even though I knew what happens, the final scene still sends a shiver down my spine. Lord Melbury (the late Michael Gywnn) from the Fawlty Towers episode 'A Touch of Class' pops up too. Brilliant stuff.
+sct353 Yes, it was good. Especially when Mark says to Stella that he's going to put her in the frame for killing Angela, and then the look on his face when Stella tells him the truth about 'Angela' is simply priceless. Yes, Michael Gwynn was also good as you say, as was Arthur English ( Mr. Harmon from Are you being served ). Cheers.
+Nick Charlton Too true Nick. I was in my early 20's and living in the UK when this series was made, so I remember it well. But sad to say, TV today ( with a handfull of exceptions ) is a wasteland on both sides of the Atalantic. They just don't do shows like this any more, which is a real pity. No more Pennies from Heaven, Lipstick on my collar, Steptoe, Fawlty Towers, Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett ( who I see is in a full episode of Thriller which is listed on this very page, btw.) We now have so called 'stars' such as Kim Kartrashcan, Kanya Pest, Justin Booboo, 'Bear Grylls et al. And back in Australia, they're still filming Neighbours and Home and away. I can hardly wait to go back. lol
No Nick, I don't think that we're being unrealistic. I just think that we were fortunate enough to live in era of great music, where artists actually sang their songs instead of 'speaking' the lyrics, a la the rap/hip hop garbage, and great TV shows as we both agreed.
Even some the American shows like Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Bilko, Star Trek, Colombo etc were quite good in their way. But now for this self absorbed, 'selfie' generation, anything seems to go. Mediocrity is king.
Oh yes Stella has a lot going for her that will make devil Mark wish he had never met her , fascinating episode .
Mrs winchester....
