Dad had a cub that he mowed our lawns with for about 40 years. I do the same thing with my 140. Personally I think they are both great, but I do love my 140 better. My Allis B with it's sickle bar mower is an amazing kit too.
Great video. I plan to run a pretty sizable produce operation when I retire in a year or so. I was considering the cub, but the 140 would do all I need and more.
You would be much happier with a 140, though they’re a bit pricey these days if you figure in all the tillage and planting implements. Cubs are pricey too, but easier to find with all the implements you’d need. Thank You for watching
Outstanding video Tom! I've used Grandpa's Cub as well as my 140 and other 140s and I much prefer the 140. While it has much more horse power, some other things I like about a 140 is the fact that You don't have to take the whole hood and gas tank off to get to the spark plugs. Also I really like the independent front and rear touch control levers on the 140 where as the Cub only has the one that operates both. On the 140, you can lower one lift without lowering them both. Also implements for the 100 and 130 can be used with the 140 but would probably be too much for the Cub.
That’s right on every account. The 140 plows and harrows are bigger. Probably the fast hitch planters are fine, but not tillage. Also, I forgot to mention a lot of loboy and regular cub attachments are not interchangeable
Great video. My dad gave me a 49 Cub last year from his collection, leaving him 6 Cubs that have not run in years. Got 2 running again so far and counting.
One is no better than the other. The quality is identical. The 140 is made for heavier tasks. I dont think that makes it a better tractor just more suited to those heavier tasks. I think we all wish that IH would have been better managed and still existed today. We sure could use American made Farm Iron.
Twenty years ago We bought a non running cub and it came with several attachments. We got the engine running perfect. And i was dissapointed with it. Not enough HP to do what we needed it to do, So a really nice paint and decal job was done. And we took it to a consignment auction. It and the cultivator , sickle bar mower & harrow brought $1650.oo. We kept the mid mount disk plow and grader blade. Our Super A has a 200 engine with a over bore liner kit. It has plenty of power. We have video on our Super A on our Channel. Cubs are great little tractors. They just dont suit me.
I had a Super A that was made over into a 130. I have a few videos on it while I was getting it ready to sell. I can’t keep everything haha. Cubs are cute. People like them because they’re simple and small and there’s lots of parts. For any real work though, the Super A-140 is night and day difference. I will check out your channel later on when I’m not in a quiet zone and can listen. Thank You for watching
Both!🤣🤣 I do find the all white attractive but I’m truly sold on the red and white! Great lesson Tom! I’m as novice as they come but I’m learning a lot from you. Sure makes our new Kioti and Mahindra seem nearly automated!! The older rigs are definitely more hands on operation! Thanks my friend!! Really enjoyed this episode!!
I do about 3 acres of sweet corn. I have two row cultivators on a super C. It gives me a crick in my neck cultivating so I bought a cub with cultivators. I can't wait to try out my sidewinder!
Dang good video Mr Tom. You know how I feel about the 140 lol. But the super A is a close second. The cub is a good little tractor, I just think the 140 is better. Thanks for sharing buddy👍
Tom, great video. I think the best tractor is the one that does the job you need it to do. I too like all tractors. On the FarmAll’s, I prefer the rounded grills vs. the flat style. Have a great day.
I have a 50 Cub. It works perfectly for a a small garden/truck patch. The 140 has a bit more power and was more useful in larger plots. Overly fond of my Super A as well.
The Cubs certainly take up a lot less real estate and are still great for gardens I think. The Super A is a really nice tractor too. Thank You for watching
I am very fortunate to have at least one of each. Several Cubs for gardening/light work and then the Super A’s thru 100, I30, and finally 140. I prefer the rounded styling and would love to have a “unstyled ” 140. About the only difference between it and a 130 is .2 in compression for a slight HP increase. So why bother I suppose. My Cubs are either 49 or 50s, low on hp. I suppose if I wanted a plow tractor the carb and manifold off a 184 and domed pistons would net me 3 more HP, but a Super A it is not. Still looking for a fast hitch single 16 for a 100 series and a planter/fertilizer for a Cub.
I too enjoy both. I have a fast hitch planter that works on both. I sold my mounted cub planter and cultivators in favor of cultivating with the 140. Thank You for watching
About 45 acres with 15 Holsteins milkers plus some young stuff and a bull. He switched to broilers in the late 1950s and sold out of that before that endeavor tanked in New England. They kept a handful of handful of Hereford cattle , a few chickens and a couple pigs plus the garden well into the 1990s after I keft
Cubs take up less room and are more manageable in small areas. Parts and implements are abundant as well. The 140 is a much better tractor, but it’s about 1/3 bigger. Parts are in good supply, but attachments can be pricey and hard to find. Try them Both if you can, but don’t rule out a Super A, 100 or 130 either
I am a newbee here. I have a 5 acre plot of land with my home i bought for retirement. I would like to use the land for food production. I am looking for an older cheap tractor like a farmall or ford. can you advise me on what to buy? I would like to get something cheap, easy to get parts that are not expensive. I would need to be able to bush hog, till, cultivate and plow. thanks for any advice you can give. I am in TN and the soil seems to be clay.
An old Ford 8N will have a 3-point hitch, but you’d need to buy a $100 overrunning clutch for the bush hog and it won’t have live hydraulic lift as the pump is after the clutch, so the hydraulics pause when the clutch is depressed and they aren’t very good for cultivating with. Cubs are usually pretty plentiful, small, easy to operate and with good parts and attachments availability. The problem with Cubs is that the PTO turns the wrong way so only IH Cub PTO implements will work on it, it only has 3 speeds and none of them ever seem to be the right gear, they don’t have engine sleeves so rebuilds are expensive. A Super A, 140, 100 or 130 can have a 3-point add-on, but you’d still need an overrunning PTO clutch for the bush hog to be safe (without it, you can’t push the clutch in until the blades stop spinning). These tractors were designed for vegetable and tobacco growers in mind and are very good at it even now. Parts are good, easy to work on and are fun to drive. Implements are sometimes hard to get unless you are able to get a package deal. Allis, Case, and others often have proprietary hitches as well and implements can be hard to obtain. John Deere had the H, B, 50 etc that are good, but even now, green paint gets premium $$$. They do make fast hitch equipment like rakes, blades and mowers still today. Good Luck and thank you for watching
@@LedgemereHeritageFarm thanks. If I were to spend a little more would a ford 2000 or 3000 be better regarding the hydraulics? are they expensive to work on? I am a mechanic by trade so i can do the work i just do not want to have to over pay for parts. thanks.
When u get a Chan’s can u get the Mesherment of the bar the grader blade bolts to when u have the fast hitch I can not find one so I’m and going to have to make one
If you were to buy a Cub, in your opinion what would be the best year to be looking at and should it include a fast hitch? I currently have my grandfather’s old 1949 that requires a lot of work. I would like to just buy another one and retire the one I have. You have a wealth of knowledge on the cubs and I would value your opinion. I live in South Central, Pa. and there are plenty of used ones in the area.

IH built the last model As in Louisville. All Cubs, and Super A--140s were built at Louisville.
I didn’t know that the A’s were last built there and not Chicago as well. Thank You 😊
