    The E46 M3 and the E39 M5 are still of the two best looking cars out of BMW for quite some time. All of the newer designs look..."off" somehow, in my opinion.

    I own a E46 M3 with a SMG transmission........I was looking at a "real" manual and then when I drove the SMG car I hated it. (its my wife's daily driver) ...that being said ..I now love the SMG not only for its versatility but once you truly learn how to drive it ..it beats a "real" manual every time. I love this car and I will never sell it or get it rid of it. This is my first BMW and I now understand what "Ultimate Driving Machine" means...great video guys and I really enjoyed watching it!

    • @DavidMassieux
      @DavidMassieux 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@logan86123 Same here, and even on our used marked, never seen those problems I see in american videos, maybe it's materials or it's weather conditions (being parked in the sun days on out? heavy humidity and huge temperatures?) Even those with 250k miles and above both in France and Germany aren't in those conditions.

  • @EverydayDriver
    @EverydayDriver  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Krycek2008 - Yes, you can leave the SMG in D. And it really doesn't help - odd clunky shifts one moment, perfectly normal the next. The owner of this particular M3 told us he still fights with his SMG.

    The SMG isn't as involving as a manual, or as seem-less as a good autobox. Then add to that the questionable reliability (some owners have no issues, others have regular issues) and high-cost to repair/replace and we have to say... Get the manual. We hope that helps. Thanks for watching and asking questions!

    I think it's difficult to review an SMG-equipped M3 without understanding how the transmission works and how to use it. Spending less than a day in one certainly isn't enough time, especially when you are under the assumption that you can just get in and make smooth effortless shifts like a DCT. SMG simply does not work that way.

    • @CellProcessor
      @CellProcessor 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Exactly! I've been driving SMG for two years and love it. It takes months of daily driving before you truly understand it. People think it's automatic where you get in and go but it has a learning curve.

    • @hondata974
      @hondata974 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with that and I won't argue with that logic, but honestly, no matter how great or advanced the SMG, it's still no manual, I like the SMG, but my heart still says manual, just my opinion, same way with Porsche's PDK, it is one of the greatest transmissions made, but I still prefer manual because that's what makes a car more of a driver's vehicle, and of course, a manual has less problems for that matter.

      Because I'm different? And took the time to learn something properly? Don't get me wrong, manual is cool and all, but they're becoming obsolete. Don't be so narrow-minded, makes you look dumb.

    Nice video! I drive a Silver-Gray 2006 M3 Coupe with a 6-speed manual transmission. It has 19" wheels and about 53,000 miles on it. I absolutely love this car and don't think that I will ever sell it! It is a blast to drive and the road feedback makes it feel like an extension of my body and mind. I bought it in 2007 with 10,000 miles on it. In the ensuing years, I have had at least 4 instances of guys walking up to me in parking lots and asking if I wanted to sell it. Best car of my life!

    I've owned two E46 M3s. The first with a manual gearbox. Delightful. The second, which I still own has SMG. I hated it at first but my mechanic taught me how to use it and I've loved it ever since. I ordered both cars new, fully loaded. My '05 has 65,000 miles, has held up magnificently (looks new) and I can't see ever selling her. Great all around car.

    • @EverydayDriver
      @EverydayDriver  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to hear your thoughts, Mark! Yes, the SMG is a definitely a "you can get used to it" gearbox, we're just much happier with the manual in this car. Cool to hear from you!

    You've left three separate comments with three separate insults. We hope you'll watch more of our work, including the other M3 videos available. You'll note that the guys always state good and bad things about every car they review and while this style doesn't work for everyone there are many people that do enjoy it. Meanwhile, while the SMG and Manual may share internals, their completely different interaction makes them different transmissions from the drivers seat. Thanks for watching!

    The fixes for the SMG light are very simple. Often times it will bump into N when driving, this is due to heat. The sensor it mounted to close to the engine, a simple fix is to relocate it.
    If this does not solve it, its the salmon colored relay. 99% of the time its one of the two issues. Both easy and cheap to fix.
    Also, you can have the care flashed with the software for the CSL model M3 and it changes the cars feel and makes it more enjoyable.

    How is SMG garbage? You mean the pump or shift actuator? Because the SMG tanny is a GETRAG same exact one on the manual cars. All you need is a 6spd bellhousing & gear recognition sensor. And of course your pedal, slave cylinder, and coding etc..

    Don't forget, that even though the smg pump may fail, tons of people online have shown that a resister in the sensor for the pump is actually poorly insulated.
    As well, lower batter or a poor battery connection will trip the light.
    A dump into neutral and rev will light it up, cleared on next start.
    And last but not least, if the pump gives out, it is the same exact transmission as a manual, and a conversion from smg to manual is about 1k
    Proud owner of 02' smg 131,000 miles

    I have heard many people complain about the SMG transmission, especially those who are reviewing it. What they do not realize is that it takes time to learn how to use the transmission properly. For example, the statement in the video about "having to rev high to shift smoothly" is absolutely incorrect. If you learn it, its awesome.

    The best option is to drive the SMG in manual mode and you have no trouble. You can use the paddles or the lever and change up and down like a normal gear box just without the clutch. It even blips the revs either downshifting or up. Personally I think its a brilliant gear box, you have up to 6 options for the speed of the changes and the launch control will have you spinning the back wheels right through to second gear.

  • @2Phast4Rocket

    The seat is a torture rack when you drive more than 30 minutes. I put an extra lumbar support on mine. The SMG sucks at 1st gear engagement when going from a stand still. I use all the five bars when driving around town because this closely duplicates how I shift in manual.

    • @RobbieKhan
      @RobbieKhan 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carlyle's Picks It's an old BMW so inevitably things will break, this is very much expected and should be factored into ownership of such cars.
      Thankfully these cars have also been around long enough that genuine parts can be sourced through many channels at very good rates and your local independent garage will be able to fit them at very good labour rates. the same goes for servicing.
      Take for example an Inspection 2 on the E46 M3. This service is quite lengthy and requires valve clearance to be done. As such a BMW dealer or franchised garage might charge you around the £700 mark or more. I have a local indy that's very knowledgeable and gives friendly 1to1 advice. He charges £550.
      So shop around, find that indy garage you never knew about in your town and price up common failure components from places like EuroCarParts and drive happy in the knowledge that should something go wrong, it won't cost an arm and leg to fix :)

    Just bought a 2002 E46 with the SMG about a month ago.86k miles. I wish I would have gotten a manual trans. Went out the other morning and it would go from 1st to Neutral to start the car. Eventually did later that day. I have a feeling this is going to be expensive. But, I love the car!

    I agree that this M3 is one of, if the not best iteration of the M3 ever. For me, it is definitely my favourite iteration of the 3 series. Just a classic and timeless design that has aged really well over time. And who could go wrong with that amazing 3.2-L BMW inline 6 engine? One of the best sounding engines ever ~ And yes, the SMG transmission is not the smoothest and is pretty jerky, but it definitely takes time to get used to, and it was revolutionary when it came out. I'd still go with the manual, but the manual mode for the SMG transmission is definitely smoother than the automatic mode. Still not perfect, but better than having the transmission harshly jerk you forward.

    Enjoyed the video - thanks for making and posting it. I had an e46 M3 with SMG for a few years, and after I got used to it, I enjoyed it - it gave me the bug for automated manuals/dual clutches. Automated single clutch manuals have a unique personality - flawed but loveable. I loved the metallic-buzziness of the e46 m3 engine at full chat - but the CSL version is the biscuit taker.

    @Ericbuyslunch BMW sensors and window motors go out after 100k miles, engines and transmissions are bullet proof. I purchased a 1998 BMW 740iL in 2003 with 41k miles. It now has over 242k miles and is still going strong, the only things I have replaced are sensors and window motors. BMW's are built with something called "limp home mode", so if something goes wrong you won't get stranded. BMW's are addicting, once you own one you won't replace it with anything else, but another BMW

    ya i had a 325i 03 and the interior was mint except on the door handle where i would use my leg to brace my self when i was drifting it or just having fun. the rub spot wasn't something you could see but you could feel that it was softer in that one area

    I agree. At first, it is very weird..you feel like you are 16 learning to drive all over again. Within a week, you are comfortable, but not until a few months of driving SMG and having plenty of experience driving both normal and spirited, do you really start to get it and like it. BUT this is only if the SMG is working properly. I own an M3 SMG and have had a few issues with the SMG computer's adaptations causing the clutch engagement to be a little erradic. Fixed with autoenginuity scan tool.

    Turn off DSC, turn on Sport Mode, turn on Track Only Mode, use paddle shifters and the SMG shifts manually.
    They were driving in Automatic Mode which is admittedly clunky, but Manual Mode is smooth as silk.

    Never had any issues with mine, but I do agree that it can be jerky in manual at short shift speed, and at slow shift speed it's not doing exactly what I wanted. Still loved it though ...

  • @goguhu

    I guess that's individual, I got used to mine in a day, but I do admit that to get nice shifts you need to keep it in 5/6 and throttle match (like you would in manual for smooth driving). But the fun factor to shift at 6-8k under full throttle was soo worth the minor issues at slow speed.

    You're the only person I know who actually prefers the E46 facelift headlights. The best looking ones BY FAR are the original headlights with the round trim of the coupe, which is exactly why they were never changed on the M3.

    SMG has nearly ended my life on several occasions. There's nothing like starting a turn across traffic when you think it's in gear, but it's actually in the middle of changing down! Lovely stuff!
    But all this adds to the fun of driving an E46 M3 as far as I'm concerned. I like SMG, but it's not for everyone. My advice, test out SMG before you buy one. Bear in mind that it takes a while to get used to. If you're not sure after driving one, go manual.

      The SMG doesn't upshift or downshift by itself unless you have it in automatic mode.

    • @LiveStoicism
      @LiveStoicism 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I take that back just slightly, when you're coming to a stop it will downshift into first gear for you. But it's never been so violent that I've almost died :p

    The understatement has always been BMW style. The idea behind M cars is that they should look almost like regular range BMW cars. Functionality not glamour or showing off. That's why I like it.

    I think some people forget how great the E46 is, everyone going for the E92 m3 in white especially for a modern look, dont get me wrong E92 M3 looks mean as hell, but they have gotten so common you just dont care anymore,
    seen a White E46 M3 and my jaw dropped. is looked great. they still look modern to this day for me and seem alot more rarer each year.

  • @hankdendrijver

    Nonsense talk about the SMG. I have this exact model with the SMG gearbox and you don't have to floor it to make it shift smooth. You should lift the gas a little after you shifted and all goes smooth and well. You do however need some time to learn to drive it, it takes a few days to make it smooth. Like learning to use a clutch only a lot easier. Driving smooth with a clutch took me some weeks if not months. The SMG took me some days to make it smooth. I love it.

    most of those were fixed under recall. The engine issues were something that occurred within a very quick life time, chances are if its still running has 60k, your not gonna see it.
    The vanos can quit, but that is any variable timing.
    Subframe is hit or miss, I notice it in high rain/snow salt areas. My m3 desert car from TX to NM has no subframe cracking or issues so far. 11yrs old 131k.
