I used the V1 as a work horse for a few years on events and what not, it was great but i'd often try and avoid it for anything casual or creative because of the weight, it was just annoying (but got fantastic shots). SOOO happy with the V2, the weight is honestly the biggest reason i switched over. No regrets, it is a premium priced lens, but if using for paid gigs I wouldn't hesitate to get it. :D
Also finally can use the 1.4 / 2.0x perfectly. The v1 is just acceptable with 1.4x (that was still not perfect in terms of AF. The 0.4m min focus @ 70mm is just insanely cool for those rush shots when you cannot change the lens fast enough but want to shoot close.
I was saving up for the V1... but now after seeing this and Jared Polin's review, I'm going for this. I rented the original 70-200 for a trip to AZ and I remember it just being so heavy to lug around. I got amazing shots with it, but it was a formidable lens to handle.
Im a youtuber mainly focused on travel videography . And i have experienced the older 2.8 lens is too heavy that u cant take hand held shots perfectly evenif the video quality is so great. So i have decided to go ahead with the f4 version... 😁😁 but now,im gonna go ahead with the second gen f2.8 version...
just bought mk ii! I went down to B&H in Manhattan and tried both! Hands down mk II won! It is so much lighter and the auto focus is sooooo fast! I am so excited for it to be shipped to me! Thank you for this review.
Yes, this is one Sony lens I will save up for. I have the Tamron 70-180mm for about a year now. I have watched the comparison between this lens and Tamron, this is only 200g more than the Tamron and I think I can handle it.
I ordered the mk I during the Sony summer cash back sale but my local photo store somehow lost my order so in the end I didn't get it in time for the cash back and hence never got the lens. Now I'm really happy that that happened and I will definitely get the mk ii. Especially because they improved it in terms of video usage so much.
Your videos and photos are just a blast. Incredibly beautiful. We don't have such a thing, imagine, you are being watched from Russia, in a town in deep Siberia. I had to use a translator, keep shooting, it's gorgeous😉
that is an awesome lens I was watching Miguel Quiles on Alpha Universe and he said something to the effect that cameras and lenses are so advanced now they are waiting for the photographer to take the shot. I also liked how he said he can spend more time on the creative side rather than working on the technical side.
It is not completely true. The 70200GM2 can shoot closer at 0.4m @ 70mm which is a practical and creative feature. The lighter weight helps photographers' heath (ok, Miguel shoots mostly in a studio where 50mm / 85mm / 135mm are perfect for him). Tools are still important to photographers to create great creative works.
I own the V1 and I have used the V2. Honestly it's only about a pound lighter and has a aperture ring. Other than that, the difference between them won't be noticed in real world working conditions. You can get a V1 from $1850 to $1999. So I cant justify the $800 difference in price at this point. It's great that Sony revamped this lens but don't get caught up in the hype. Is the V2 a great lens, yes. Is it worth upgrading? for me, no.
Please excuse my ignorance but is he editing the pictures on the computer afterwards to make them look a lot more vibrant, colorful or is that done though the camera?
Nice for all the guys getting their 70-200 now! No need to switch for the users of the current ones IMHO (very sharp still and it's a portrait lens for the majority - I had to tone down on sharpness often because it was too crisp ). But the tripod collar is not compatible with arca Swiss mounts - why for heavens sake 😐
Just by a Kirk Arca-Swiss foot for Sony 70-200 GM1/2 / 100400GM. It costs extra but at least better than locking "moving" plates! I agree the original brands need to take a page from Tamron (been making Arca-Swiss) one for a while. However, do not by Leofoto (even though around half the price) but not locking tight enough for my 200600G.
Happiest Birthday Brother 🥳🤩🥳 I always love to see your videos and photography on TH-cam or Instagram! Keep up the good work and may you have many more! Love from Pakistan ❤️
Canon RF is a joke, yeah shorter but cut the back end. So it cannot use 1.4 / 2.0x which is very important for shooting sports and traveling. A Canon HK ambassador said this is not important and said one can always corp with EOS R5 , did he not think about all those sports shooters? Lastly, he insulted me that I do not know how to use lenses (I was a Canon shooter for 30+ years)! So good when the 70200GM2 came out and my belief is right). Canon really cares, NOT. If you want a shorter and lighter lens, get Tamron 70-300 or Sony 70-300G.
Definitely, less weight, faster AF, better quality (esp using 1.4 / 2.0x - would not dream of using 2.0x on MK I), aperture ring, and 0.4m min focus @ 70mm.
I always see these black and white monster lenses for Sony and think damn, I really want such a thing, this is what the pros use. And then I look into my shelf and see my Fuji 50-140 F2.8 which is basically the same, when you add the sensor crop and then I'm happy again. Sometimes I still wish I could afford a whole Sony gear set, but then again I love the fuji xt4 for the quick dials and I tried my GFs Alpha 7 II and didn't get too warm with it. But I feel like Sony pictures just look more details, sharper and just overall better, or people are just a lot better at editing than I am
What put me off with Fuji APS-C system is that its high-end bodies alone cost more than an A7III (which is still a fine camera). When a FF gets better at high ISO. Also, Sony lenses are getting better and better! Why pay more for APS-C sensor system?
@@wingcreator Like I said, I couldn't get along with Sony. Also the price difference is not much, the XT4 with kit lens is like 2000€ and the A7III with kit is like 1950€. The top sony lenses are a lot more expensive than the top fuji lenses. All Sony red badge G master lenses are 1800€ and more up until 2200€. The 8-16mm Fuji is the most expensive "normal" lens at 1600€ and nearly all others are much cheaper. I don't know, the Fuji was my first camera and I like it a lot. Could be different if I went for Sony first, who knows.
@@YouSoerenTube great points. Try to rent a Sony A7iii or get a used one. Might be a great start with the Sony ecosystem and the many third party lenses. Best wishes.
Hey Pierre, great content as usual. I know they are different beasts, but if you had to have the 70-200 gm II OR the 50mm 1.2 gm only, which one would you choose?
hi Pierre! i like u so much man ! u doing good ! i just curious about which gear are you using for that video . i mean gopro or phone ? i know u taking photo with sony but i wanna know which camera you using for taking that vlog ? thanks
70200G f4 is nice in quality but definitely needs a makeover with less weight and closer min focus + an Arca-Swiss foot. Skip 70200GM / Tamron 70-180. 700200GM2 kills every 70-200 on the market (if the brand/price are not a concern?).
@@wingcreator Got the f4 for price reasons, 3k is too much for a hobby at the moment for me, focus distance is definitely an issue, it's still good but it's starting to be an old lens

Do you regularly used most of time that manual point of focus selecting on screen by wheel instead AF of camera?
