The Madrigal Singers were on a tour of select South American Countries and Uruguay was one of them. The Catholic priest of that Catholic Church learned that they were to perform in his locality so he visited the Madrigal Singers to personally request the Madrigal Singers to sing in that Catholic Church at a pre-arranged date and time after the Madrigal Singers had done their own concert. The Catholic priest organized and invited his congregation to attend and listen to the Madrigal Singers perform that song. Almost all of those attendees have never heard of the Madrigal Singers until they listened to their Angelic voices. It was winter time when they performed in Uruguay. They arrived in their winter street clothes as it was an informal performance. You will notice the genuine appreciation of all the people who listened to them sing. Please note, Samantha Lisa, that each singer had been purposely mixed randomly by the musical director/Choirmaster Mark Anthony Carpio (2001-present) who took over from the founder Mrs. Andrea Veneracion (+) (1963-2001). So tenors 1 will have either tenor 2 or a soprano 1 or 2 or alto 1 or 2 or bass 1 or 2 on either his or her side, and so on until every singer would have completed the semi-circle seating arrangement. You really have to be excellent in your own assigned vocal prowess as you could be easily confused and carried away by the vocal part of the singer seated next to you. Reading musical score sheets, when they performed, were never a part of becoming a Madrigal Singer so they have to be fully prepared with extensive practices before they will sing their individual parts in all of their concert performances. Another challenging part of becoming a Madrigal Singer is to sing while seated. (I used to be a Tenor 2 in the Catholic Church choir of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney Australia where the Cardinal of Australia resides. We sang using musical sheets, and I was a member for several years). To be included as a Madrigal Singer, you really have to be excellent in your vocal prowess, have the ability to learn and master musical scores written in other foreign languages and be able to sing your own notes while blending perfectly with the rest of the group after rigorous practices being next to either a tenor or soprano or bass or Alto. Each Madrigal Singer has to be a past or present student, faculty or an Alumni of the University of the Phillippines. They perform in a variety of Styles and forms but they specialize in the Madrigal, a polyphonic and challenging musical style popular during the Renaissance Period where singers and guests would gather around a table during a banquet and make music together, singing in a semi-circle without a conductor and musical sheets. Thru the decades, different groups of the Madrigal Singers had given command performances for the Royalty and Heads of States. These included Pope Paul VI, Saint Pope John Paul II, U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon and Barrack Obama, Chinese President Hu JinTao, Queen Sofia of Spain, King Juan Carlos I of Spain and Singapore retired Prime Minister Lee KUAN YEW. Both past and present Madrigal Singers’ members are either professional engineers, accountants, business entrepreneurs, etc. It is really tough to join and be part of this group. That is why the Madrigal Singers (also called MADZ to shorten their name) had won the grand prize, first, in the prestigious Grand Prix European de Chant Choral Competition in Tours, France back in 1997, beating five other European Grand prize winners namely Guido d’Arezzo, Italy; Debrecen, Hungary; Varna, Bulgaria; Gorizia, Italy and Tolosa, Spain. The MADZ displayed a virtuoso performance so moving, one juror had describe the groups’ music as the “most beautiful sound on earth.” On August 26, 2007 the Philippine Madrigal Singers again won the grand prize in the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing in Arezzo, Italy. This victory made them the first of only four choral groups in the world to win the grand prize twice. On the 27th of July, 2009, UNESCO honored MADZ and designated the group as UNESCO Artist For Peace. On September 19, 2010, the MADZ were conferred the Guidoneum Award 2010 by the Fondazione Guido d’Arezzo, Italy. 1st July, 2012, MADZ became the first choir in the world to receive the “Brand Laureate Premier Award” as the world’s best Choral ensemble from the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation. On August 27, 2016 MADZ won the Grand Prix at the 64th International Choral Competition in Arezzo, Italy. The Madrigal Singers thru the years opted retirement after several years being a MADZ so a new set of singers are auditioned as their replacements. You could just imagine the extensive pool of singing talents the Philippines have to offer the world. I am a filipino but have migrated to Sydney Australia. Sorry Samantha Lisa, that I had written the longest comment in this your REACTION. I saved you the time to learn more of what makes the Madrigal Singers unique to the world in that it needed to depart from the usual Choral group way of singing and limited members as one whole choir group.
Great summary of the Madz. Best Choir in the world bar none. I am biased though being married to a Madz Soprano 1 from the 1997 batch that won the EGP. Love to see the reactions.
Wonderful! I've seen them perform in the US in person in the late 80s and I was in awe with their ethereal harmony of their voices. I heard that the conservatory of music in University of the Philippines picks the cream of the crop students and train them to perfection and travel all over the world to perform. Glad to hear that the group, with younger batch is still strongly entertaining the world carrying on the legacy.
I experienced this soul touching performance with you. This a cappella rendition with range, tempo and dynamics changes is a powerful showcase of Philippine Madrigal Singers, a world class and award winning ensemble. The original was a Spanish language pop 70's hit by the Basque group Mocedades. Done in choral harmony at a measured pace, it becomes an almost spiritual experience. Thank you for sharing and reacting. Signed, a Mowienatic.
Some of the best-trained voices in the Philippines sing in various choirs, chorales, glee clubs, and ensembles. These are formed in churches, schools, small towns, and corporations and they sing on holidays and special occasions. I was a member of different choirs but it was my brother who went on tour to Europe and North America with the Madrigal Singers.
Woohoo 30k congratulations. Well done Sam!! Onwards and upwards. What a glorious choir , just beautiful. A perfect example of the healing power of music. Stunning!! 💗💗💗

It is God's gift.. Both the talent, the ability and the capability to appreciate it..
I remember a group many years ago called "Mocedades" that had a hit with this song... This is more mellow, but still very beautiful.
