Er war Co-Trainer bei Jupp Heynckes, Louis Van Gaal, Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti oder Hansi Flick, und avancierte zum legendären Fußballlehrer beim FC Bayern München: Das Bochumer Urgestein Hermann Gerland.
Der „Tiger“, wie ihn bis heute jedermann nennt, wurde zweimal Vereins-Weltmeister, zweimal Triple-Sieger und gewann neun deutsche Meisterschaften. Gerland, jahrzehntelang sozusagen das Auge des Münchner Topclubs, entwickelte zahlreiche spätere Nationalspieler wie Dietmar Hamann, Holger Badstuber, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, David Alaba oder Thomas Müller - und blieb dabei doch stets bescheiden: „Bei einigen war ich ein bisschen beteiligt in der Ausbildung.“
Louis van Gaal, Bayerns Chef-Coach von 2009 bis 2011, sah das anders: „Hermann, Sie haben mir an unserem ersten Tag zu jedem Spieler drei Sätze gesagt. Ich muss Ihnen nach einem Jahr sagen, das habe ich noch nie erlebt: Alles, was Sie gesagt haben, stimmt. Sie haben ein unvorstellbares Auge!“

He was an assistant coach to Jupp Heynckes, Louis van Gaal, Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti, and Hansi Flick, and became a legendary trainer at FC Bayern Munich - the dyed-in-the-wool Bochumer Hermann Gerland.
“Tiger,” as everyone still calls him to this day, is a two-times Club World Cup winner and a two-times treble winner, and won Germany’s Bundesliga nine times. Serving as the eyes, so to speak, of the top Munich club for decades, Gerland helped train a number players who went on to become national players, like Dietmar Hamann, Holger Badstuber, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, David Alaba, and Thomas Müller. And he remained modest throughout: “I had a small part to play in training some of them.”
Louis van Gaal, Bayern’s head coach from 2009 to 2011, sees things slightly differently: “Hermann, you said three sentences to me about every one of our players on our first day. And now, a year later, I can say that this is something I have never seen before - everything you told me was true. You have an incredible eye for these things!”
