  • Widewater Lagoon lies to the north-west of Shoreham Beach. It is an area of brackish water landlocked by a man-made shingle bank.
    It is home to herons, swans, geese, cormorants, kingfishers, gulls and many other wildfowl.
    In the early twentieth century a number of chalets were erected along the seafront, but in at the beginning of the Second World War they were moved to make way for military use.

    Beautiful area of Sussex, which many people don’t know about. The ecology of the Widewater Lagoon is very interesting. I’m a member of the Friend’s of Widewater and before Covid-19 an ecologist took a group of us on a fascinating guided walk 💚

    I did this walk for the first time today. Wish I seen this before. Thanks for the gems for a future walk.

    Thank you to you Richard and Martin, that video was brilliant, it was so lovely to see the sea , and hear the sound of the shingle as you walked along

      Yes - living by the sea has it's rewards. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Very impressed by the Norfolk bridge. Thank goodness Martin found some orange cold weather gear.

    I'm sure you know Richard but the Norfolk suspension bridge which was demolished was the model for the famous Szechenyi bridge in Budapest, the first bridge over the Danube. Hard to think that any other country would have allowed such a splendid historically significant building to be destroyed.

      I didn't know that - but I totally agree with your sentiment - we seem to take pleasure in destroying all beauty in the landscape.

    How fascinating! I have been walking dogs here now and then for years, and knew nothing of the history of the lagoon or the occupation of the seafront in the years leading up to WW2. Thanks Richard!
    p.s. When are we going to see some footage from Martin's new toy?

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - I am waiting for the results of his new toy - it sounds promising.
